No, there is indeed something rotten in all this. It's not the destination of the call home thing, it's the call itself. As stated before, there is no reason whatsoever it should call home without asking permission before.
And don't forget the lesser known, yet painfully incompatible http://www.paralan.com/sediff.htmldifferential (HVD) SCSI . Same connectors, but 48V. Very efficient for blowing regular scsi hardware if you mix them up in the same chain...
Slightly off-topic : i doubt those crazy Falun-Gong followers qualify as an "anti-Chinese group". They're just a sect/spiritual_practice/younameit which has no such goal as "being anti-Chinese". The Chinese goverment does qualify as "anti falun gong" though.
France Telecom has been branding its internet and mobile product with ORANGE since they bought this mobile carrier a few years ago. I'm glad they support OSS, but that doesn't look like them. France telecom has a king size record at screwing its own customers and doing whatever it takes to prevent competition on the ISP market. They got sued and had to pay huge fines.
It's probably like in every other big company with smart, nice R&D people and evil marketing forces wasting everything.
