The whole purpose of the huge military machine is to make sure we are at the controlling position of the world's resources, manly petroleum. Why do we need this control? It ensures we can continue to issue more and more debts and money. The new debts pays off the old one; that's how it has worked since Alexander Hamilton. Not enough income to pay the interests? No problem, the Federal Reserve will just issue money directly to buy the debts. Look despite of our huge debts, big investors still buy up US debts whereas even small economies like Greece can rock the Euro. There is no credible alternative to US currency and hence US debts. US debt is a ponzi scheme but nobody worries because there will always be ways to expand the base... until the Chinese comes along.
Currently we lock China in this ponzi scheme. But China is probably the only other economy be able to grow its own advanced military power on a sustainable basis. When they become powerful enough, they can open up their currency and thus sovereign debt market. They can also insert their controls over Earth resources. Now investors around the world will have an alternative and they eventually stop buying US debts. Then we will collapse. That's the reason the US government and the public are really afraid of the long term prospect of China and want to crush their progress. Unfortunately, it may be too late for that.
True but that's PEOPLE in any country behaves. Democracy is simply a game of fooling lazy/stupid/selfish PEOPLE with clever marketing. Non-democracy is about controlling unhappy/frustrated PEOPLE with force and propaganda. That's how the world has worked for thousands of years. it is likely to be like that for next thousands of year if the Earth and its resources still exist.
Unfortunately, you have to pay one way or the others. Look at some of the cleanest governments in the world -- Singapore and Hong Kong; public servants are given free condos for life; a nice condo there easily worth a million USD or more, thanks to the governments' monopolistic control of land. In the US, we pay government officials with handsome pension benefits; we also make most of that legal by calling the acts "political donation". Money buys cleanness, regardless of political system; at the end, public serving jobs are career and not volunteer works. China is currently trying to clean up ultimately by raising the salary and retirement benefits of public servants too; if they succeed, they will end up being like us -- with trillions in public debts.
They had "success" in testing simply because nobody is using this. There are thousands other ways to do the same if only you and the few recipients know the route. Chinese government does not worry the information getting it, today you can read CNN or many other English sites in China unrestricted; they worry the information being spread to wide population and cause social unrest, like in Egypt. If it can ever be popular among to millions of people, say a lot more than the number of people using proxies or reading English news over there, they can find way to shut it down and it will be shut it down.

I called what I called a 'Sputnik moment' for US! We must defeat the brits and take back the honor of being the greatest nation! We will fix our edukation!!!
Well... that's nothing. The actual name of the president Hu Jintao is blocked and the word Communist Party is also blocked. (of course, these names are not illegal but it would be a lot of trouble for the operators to filter them, so the site just block as many as possible thinking nobody would say anything good about them any way.)
That's because patriotism sells. And blaming others, especially your upcoming rival, makes your audience subtly liken you more.
Chinese used to think they were the greatest civilization and rejected learning from outside since 1700's. In the last 30 years, they have awaken, and they have started openly criticizing their own ways and greedily learn what are the best of external worlds.
Whereas we have started becoming the China in the Qing dynasty, the nation as a whole is brainwashed with our self-promoting values like democracy and think we are the best and the most positive force in the world. Til today after the Great Recession, we still refuse to accept the ideas that there could be some fundamental flaws in our system. After all, our democratic system has its own big share of responsibility in the many problems we have today and it also helped bringing up the new "Chinese empire" 30 years ago, If the system were perfect, why wouldn't such severe errors be made and persisted for so long.
You are right about people follow money. but you are terribly wrong, like pretty much most comments on this page, that it is the fault of capitalism or that respects/pay to engineers/scientists are substantially "better" (comparing to the other people) in China, India, Russia, Japan or wherever else you feel is threatening you at the moment.
People in those countries want to become engineers and doctors, simply because that's easiest way to get decent jobs. And as the case with China before their market reform, it is the easiest way to get to higher positions in government.
Like US, successful entrepreneurs and CEOs in China and everywhere else, like this one, has accumulated huge amount of wealth compared to any typical engineers or scientists.
All country policies or politicians declare engineers and scientists being the most important. Education's awfully important. All of those are marketing for themselves.
As an engineer who has tried business, I found marketing and sales skills are tremendous important and those talents are very hard to find.
Human beings are social animals. And in today's world, few can achieve much alone. The ones who can find, pitch, motivate and organize others (to join in, with labor or money) tend to be the most important persons. These are the jobs of CEOs and marketers. Good CEOs are good social engineers. That's why they get paid high.
Many CEOs endure hardship and big bet of their life/property early on when they started as an entrepreneurs. Many in finance industry made their income based on hard performance like how much revenue contributed.
The ability of the US has produced large number of technologies and hi-tech companies is because the US has the best marketing talents, largest and most vibrant capital market, and a legal system and lawyers who can defend innovators.
All economies will evolve from product-oriented to marketing-oriented, regardless of countries or even political systems.
Most people here are just having too much ego and self-esteem and always believe they deserve more than their capability or their skills are so important.
They, like most people outside of China, confused between various level of Chinese governments and state-own enterprises. There is no such thing as one effective Chinese government in China because every low level government and would find ways to cheat the upper ones and every state-own enterprise have ways to cheat on their government too, whenever they find fringe benefits to do so without making a big mess. It is known as "Policies coming down from the top, shenanigans mushroom from the bottom." These entities actively practicing the acts not because it is allowed by policies but because they just want to make profits for their own and nobody crack them down. China is effectively a lot more decentralized and chaotic than the US; and strangely this sometimes give Chinese people a lot more freedom in actions (but not in public speech.) Chinese central government is trying to forge a false image of unity, whereas US politicians are trying to forge a false image of diversity.

It is incorrect to call China an "autocracy" as it is no longer ruled by one person. No politician there nowaday has the clout of Mao or Deng. It may be a totalitarian instead. Also if you actually go see in China, the workers do not have as much "rights" because there are so many people competing for works, especially blue collar labors. They have millions of new graduates every year entering workforce, for example. It is actually more of a market phenomena than government slavery. Generally the business market there are a lot more competitive than the US in many areas, while lacking in others.
Also one reason that large corporations dominate more and more is because the barrier in many fields are very high. For example, nobody can start a petro or pharmaceutical companies easily without billion dollars of investments to meet all the safety and quality requirements. There are actually large number of small businesses in China now, resulting in intense competition and quality problem. People, with consumerist minds, don't understand that high safety, environmental and quality standard tend to cause consolidation of suppliers and resulting corporations will have more control over the market. They will complain one way or the other.
No one really knows why Slashdot posts summaries that are at best disingenuous and at worst deliberately inflammatory. One theory, common among top Slashdotters is that inflammatory stories get more comments than report-the-facts posts.
Because the summary is written by a male who is "usually more aggressive by nature".
Well... if you are the policemen, you can eventually rip off the ones you protect -- one way or the other. Isn't this our business plan for a long time? Not to mention, the ones being protected have to buy billions dollars worth of weapons from us. So it is hard to tell if we are in red doing this business.
All correct! But that's made possible by Ponzi schemes such as revolving public debts and social security tax. Pray to God the schemes continue to function.

A report to US Congress is not for reporting balanced facts. It is a clever piece of political marketing material to fool you. Especially if the "report" is about China nowaday.
Yeah, India is a lot closer when it comes to campaign corruption and a lot closer (or even worse than) China when it comes to government official corruption

Easy. They just need to publish the list of the names on government websites, so everybody know what not to publish.

When the poor farmers in Taiwan are lining up for lucky money handed out by a rich tycoon from mainland, everything will be possible again.
On the other hand, I just opened up sina microblog and see the word Egypt in Chinese and news of protest
Everything's clear now! Move on!
