Uh, yeah. If it was good and up to speed, it wouldn't have needed to be a google summer of code participant. See, the summer of code was for writing code. Stop me if this isn't making sense, and I'll see if I can use smaller words.
Ohhhhhh I seeeeeeee. How wrong of me. I thought that the summer of code was for mentoring up-and-coming talented coders. But now I look at the participants I can see how they're all badly-engineered products that need improving....lets take a few at random, shall we? http://code.google.com/soc/ Apache Software Foundation, Debian, FreeBSD, GCC, KDE, NetBSD, PHP, Samba, GNU, Xorg, Mozilla, Mono, OpenOffice.org.
You see - ogre participated not because it was bad, but because it wasn't. Stop reading if this isn't making sense, and I'll see if I can get you into a remedial program.
I hate this fucking argument. Not everyone is a programmer. Build a bridge, and get over this fact. There's lots of valuable skills out there and programming is only one of them.
Well at least we agree on something. You don't need to be a coder to participate in OSS. Take Blender, for example. One of those badly engineered POS that got helped out by the SOC. So bad they used in as part of the process of making the Spiderman 2 movie http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Testimonials.261.0.ht ml. But I digress. We're talking non-programmers and OSS, yeah? Well there's a whole heap of things you can do to help out. For example: - If you have some skills with graphics, then make it shiny. If you're good with words, then write a tutorial, or correct the lame programmer documentation. If you're a native non-english speaker, then translate the documentation into your own language. If you're "just" a user, then use it, but tell people that you're using it. If you find something about it that sucks and *you* can't fix it, then submit a bug report. There's someone out there that can - if they know what's wrong! You see - *that* is how OSS works. So you can't code. Build a bridge, get over the fact.
If someone says that a program needs help, they're not automatically wrong if they aren't one.
No, but if someone says that a graphics engine is poor, and they aren't a programmer, they *are* automatically uninformed. The GP to my post was saying that the engine was poor. That implies that he's either a programmer or is speaking from a point of ignorance in which case he should STFU. The fact that he said that *all* OSS engines were poor does tend to steer him in the direction of the latter camp.
Oh and as a final point, if you're going to belittle my linguistic skills earlier in a post then make damned sure that you're grammatically spot-on for the rest of your post.
If someone says that a program needs help, they're not automatically wrong if they aren't one.
The use of the word "one" here...the subject of it is implied to the "program" earlier, not to the "a programmer" three whole sentences earlier. If you feel that using "a programmer" again wouldn't scan well, then you could use a synonym such as "coder" or "software engineer".
Unreal is a very good engine. Ogre and all the other open source engines are not.
That's a fairly sweeping statement. I guess ogre being not particularly good and needing bringing up to speed was why they were one of the Google Summer of Code participants? You might want to, oh I don't know, actually find out about the OSS tech you slate before hitting the submit button. I suggest http://www.ogre3d.org/index.php?option=com_content &task=view&id=394&Itemid=2 would be a good place to start. Then if you still think that ogre isn't particularly good, why not grab a copy from SVN and back up your claims. Oh, and whilst you're there, fix what you think is wrong with it, and submit it. See - that's how OSS works. NASA wouldn't have to do a thing about it because there's highly informed people like you all around the world making it better for them!
Oops - I take the $350K back (heh - I wish!)...no I didn't RTFA (c'mon...this *is*/. after all). They'll of course be using custom license http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/licensing/ter ms.shtml. But I still stand by the "why not FOSS?" question. This is precisely the kind of project that could both benefit and benefit from the FOSS paradigm, especially considering the duration of the projects. Who knows what's going to happen to Epic over the next 20-odd years? I know this is really just NASA wanting some kind of PR exercise, but the concerns of their launch technology (if you excuse the pun) not being available throughout the duration ought to have some sway over how they approach the project.
It's $350K for heavens sake! Why not http://www.ogre3d.org/ coupled with http://www.ode.org/? Surely combining those with 2 university departments where you'll no doubt find people already familiar with the source code would be a more sensible approach to developing serious games. Sheesh. Money to burn.
... it's quite common to discuss things like Religion and Politics over dinner with friends in Europe, while these topics are often taboo here.
Actually, in Europe one never discusses religion or politics over dinner. One should always wait until after dinner when we leave the ladies to their needlepoint, and retire to the drawing room to discuss such matters over brandy and cigars.
Of course, we'd not expect someone from the colonies to understand such matters of etiquette. I suppose that's on account of them all leaving school at such an early age. --- I'm going for informative here but just don't feel it. I'm worried it just comes off as flamebait.
Linus, Please find enclosed a pre-paid airline ticket to Redmond, WA, where I'd like you to give a talk to our employees on the benefits of open-source development.
Sooo essentially what's being said is that a Chinese-language website has more users now that it's widely accessable from inside China than when it wasn't accessable from widely China.
Does this really come as a suprise to anyone? (apart from the ban being lifted, that is).
In other news, websites around the globe realise that people are more able to read their content when their servers haven't been slashdotted out of existance.
Why bother? A few reasons, off the top of my head.
1. Because it reduces the cost of ownership of a PC. Every mobo sold without LinuxBIOS on it pays a licensing fee to Award / Phoenix / whoever. With a free (as in beer) BIOS, the OLPC project can reduce their overheads. This is a "good thing" (tm).
2. Because you'll be able to tailor the BIOS to do things the way you want it to. OK - maybe *you* won't (no offence), I could (but don't really feel the need to), and others can and will. If hacking around with electronics is your thing then a FOSS BIOS is a "good thing" (tm).
3. Because if you're a coder then playing with low-level stuff is good for the soul. It reminds us of where we came from, and provides those who didn't grow up with this stuff with an appreciation of how computer architecture works from the ground up. This is also a "good thing" (tm).
All I have to say is more power to them, and well done Google for shelling out some of their hard-earned advertising revenue in that direction.
The Gizmondo was going to do this. It was going to have what they dubbed "Smart Ads" that would be MMSed to your console. Of course, no-one actually advertised using it, (FWICR) not a single smart ad was ever sent, and the gizmondo has now all-but-disappeared into infamy, shards of Ferarri Enzo, and a jail term for ex-CEO Eriksson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizmondo for more details.
Quite (cough) coincidentally, ex-boss of Gizmondo, Carl Freer, is currently running http://www.xeromobile.net/ - a cellphone network offering almost exactly this.
I can't work out if you're trolling or not, but if so... sucks to be you, doesn't it? I'll assume for the sake of the original poster that you're not, and that he may take some of what you say to heart.
Not all large companies are like this. Disclaimer - The one I work for has over 15K employees worldwide.
I have my favourite text editors installed, along with music players etc. I can install games on my work machine if I so choose (ok - I'm in gamedev, but the point does still hold).
My workstation doesn't lack RAM.
I had a noisy hard drive, spoke to IS, and a new one got installed in my machine a couple of days later. I started getting a little RSI in my wrist, so asked for an ergonomic keyboard, and a couple of days later I had a shiny new keyboard sat on my desk. I'm typing on it now, in fact (yes - from work!) and I'm doing it in Firefox.
Yes all traffic is going through our company firewall. No I don't have IM at my desk (sucks to be me). Yes, some sites are blocked by our firewall, but no we don't get a ton of spyware popups hitting us right, left, and centre. I also don't get a ton of spam coming into my work email account (apart from those damned pesky stock ads). Our company has some highly sensitive documents on it's intranet, and these security policies are a fact of life here. Could they re-engineer the firewall to give us IM at the desk? Probably but it's not important enough for me / us to make a huge issue out of it.
My lunch break is not exactly 60 minutes...it's normally about half that, but that is my choice - I like to come in late and leave early, and they're cool with that. Could I go out for a 2 hour walk in spring? I doubt it...it rains too much in Denmark for that;-)
I don't work with drones...believe it or not my colleagues are actually people, and not incompetant ones. I wonder if your colleagues hold you in as low regard as you hold them?
I listen to music normally through headphones, on account of one of my colleagues not sharing the same taste in music to me, and wanting / needing to concentrate. It's called consideration.
I also know that I'm gonna get the paycheque at the end of the month. I don't have to worry about if sales has pulled in enough revenue to cover it. I don't underestimate the freedom that this gives me.
If you don't like it where you are then get the hell out of Dodge. Go work for a small shop. Start up on your own. Whatever. Or try a different large company and see if the freedom you get is different to the freedom you have now. Just don't tar all corporations with the same brush.
Now I'd better get back to work before my boss catches me slacking off on/.

Heh - yeah...I kinda mentioned MCE/X360 as the lowest of the low (well....apart from the Sony combo, of course;-) ). So tell me again why exactly a Blu-Ray burner will let me get pr0n to my TV in a way that...oh, I don't know, a DVD burner won't? Or MythTV box. Or a modded XBox. Or Windows MCE / Xbox360 combination. Or any video card with TV Out. Blank Hi-Def media is going to be insanely expensive for the forseeable future - hell, even DL-DVD is way over-priced, and the extra resolution on your pr0n isn't going to warrant you wasting 50x the download in order to get it (compare 25 gigs to a 700 meg divx).
If anything the pr0n industry (pr any other IP-based industry, for that matter) switching to online distro is going to make the PS3 with it's DRM-infested media drive and accompanying pricepoint less attractive, not more.
They don't? Are you *sure* about that? What do you think the return path is used for, eh?;-).
In all seriousness, do you (pl.) object to (a) The performance of your device being degraded by having the tracking software on there.
