Honestly, and without intent to flame, I don't quite understand how pacifists get the way they are. I sometimes think they have the reality part of their brain missing. Damn, I hate war and wish we could live in John Lennon's "Imagine" world, but you have to look at reality, IMO. If we did nothing but say, "oh, I'm sorry, it MUST be our fault that you killed 5000 people", we would look like weakened fools--it's the exact recipe for getting taken advantage of and losing our position of power. We must find those responsible and obtain justice with as minimal damage to innocent people as possible. It's reality and reality is not perfect.

Do you honestly think that Christmas would be a concern for any terrorist? Do you think they're sitting around saying, "We've got a great plan, but we just can't do it on Christmas!"
Give me a break! You can't be softer than the people you're trying to defeat.
I've been increasingly reading more articles like this one which seems to show that all these claims about typing causing RSI or carpal tunnel syndrome is a bunch of garbage. The neck cramps you referred to is more along the right path I think. Just something for everyone to keep in mind!

I get your point, but don't you think that IBM has enough technical talent to also make $ supporting Linux? What's the difference when you have access to the source code? In my opinion, IBM can support Linux as successfully as supporting AIX because of how open it is, you might just need to get your programmers knowledge of Linux programming/kernel knowledge etc., or hire a few big guns in Linux programming. I think support would still be lucrative for them. If IBM does this, I believe they are saying that their taking some ownership of providing patches, etc....at least, that's how I'd interpret it. Furthermore, IBM could also leverage the rest of the world's contributions to Linux instead of doing it all themselves! I think it's a win-win situation.
:) HA! As long as it's not Vodka, it may just work, no?
A friend of mine from Moscow could drink (almost literally) gallons of Vodka in a sitting, but give him some rum and he was flying high!
Chan pioneered a new style of martial art movie ever since his first movie in Hong Kong, Drunken Fighter,(Many years ago, you probably haven't seen it) which added comedy elements in martial fighting.
If that's the same movie that they call "Drunken Master" over here in the U.S., a lot of us have seen it because it was re-released last year. DM was a VERY good movie, one of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen (not that I'm a martial-arts movie expert). I'd recommend DM over all of his movies.
Zhang Ziyi is absolutely beautiful.,You are so right...Natalie-who petrified with hot grits?:) She is so great looking--I just love those lips!I wish I could've been that scruffy lookin' long-haired guy in "Crouching Tiger" even if it was just acting...
You are right, but sometimes some of us actually get a kick outta Katz, but when he writes a harebrained, annoying article suggesting that the sky is falling and that everything on the internet should be obtained for free, we should complain and loudly! Perhaps it'll even serve as a sanity check for the man himself:)
Actually, though, it's the families of the teachers according to the submittal. I agree with you in spirit, however, but it's not parents of the kids who shot up the school.
I'm not sure what you expected either actually, because he addressed it in a straightforward manner. He said that they're having a struggle trying to balance functionality and security and what they're doing to try and alleviate it. What was "marketroid-speak" in his answer? He didn't dodge it as far as I can see, unless you could explain a little further what you meant!
Of course, the locals went nuts and have shown no sense of humor about this. Yet another reason to keep packing and keep looking for that job in Canada before George "The Thief" Bush turns this country into a fascist police state.
Considering San Francisco is an ultra-liberal town, I guess those Democrats are the ones without a sense of humor.:)
While I can't fully agree or disagree with their basis for the suit (though I tend to disagree), I believe they are suing for what they believed they would have earned in stock options by this time if the Microsoft "Man" hadn't kept them down. I'll be extremely disappointed, even though I'm no big MS fan, if these racism charges are true, but I never believe them at first, the racism charge is such an easy cop out these days thanks to folks like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.
Yep, and you've got to be ONE FUCKING IDIOT not to follow the BIG BLACK ARROW to the hole you have to punch for your choice. This is only an issue because the Democrats risk losing. If you're a FUCKING IDIOT, you have just as much of a chance of making a mistake voting for Buchanan instead of Bush. This "argument" PISSES ME OFF IT'S SO STUPID!!!!!!! AAAAAGGGGGHH.
Frankly, there are many more issues more important to a lot of people than abortion. I, for one, am sick to death of it and don't care anymore one way or another.
While I'd like to see someone like Harry Browne become president and remove the Federal Government totally from people's private lives, Gore is the antithesis of this with his locked boxes and affirmative action. Gore will be VERY BAD for this country, ESPECIALLY if the Democrats take control of Congress. That would just be plain reckless. If you want to throw the baby out with the bathwater just to ensure that only liberal decisions are made in the supreme court, that's your business, but don't expect everyone to run crying to Al Gore to save them for the same reasons. Scare tactics are liberals favorite tools, and are rarely grounded in rational thought...if people aren't suckered by the fright, they will see that. I'm voting for Bush.
"My man" is all about compromise. He's about free choice. YOUR view of the government and YOUR MAN are not about compromise or choice. In a Libertarian Society, you would have states with high taxes where the state government holds everyones' hands, as you obviously would like. In other states, there would be minimal taxes, and private services, where I would choose to live and take full responsibility for my actions and my life.
There's no better compromise than to let EVERYONE have their way. The main thing Harry Browne is saying is the Federal Government should not force everyone to follow its rules--pigeonhole everyone into the same category. It's similar to the I.S. mentality. I am perfectly capable of configuring a scheduling service in Windows NT, but IS refuses to allow me privileges to access that service because EVERY USER IS THE SAME, AND WE MUST CONTROL THEM ALL!
I am sorry if you took the Comrade joke as immature or name calling (it does only mean friend, doesn't it?), but if you can't appreciate a little levity in a debate, you might consider loosening up a little.
Charles E. Stuart, "Swedish Tax Rates, Labor Supply, and Tax Revenues," Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 89, No. 5 (1981), pp. 10201038.
And I quote:
The estimated long-run effects of high marginal tax rates are sufficient to explain up to 75 percent of the recent decline in the measured growth of the Swedish GNP.
Taxes were, and remain, almost crippling in order to support the general welfare in a typically inefficient manner by the government.
A Candian example from a Canadian point of view. Last time I was in Alberta, there was a strong push to greatly reform, and even eliminate Public Health Care because, as always, IT DOESN'T WORK. Your use of "comrade" just shows your extreme bias and name-calling is simply immature. Lighten up! The whole criminal-capitalist machine spiel reeks of the Russian Revolution propaganda.
Soon enough federal child-labor laws, minimum wage, etc will be abolished because "Hey I can't find it in the constitution, I looked twice!" Great plan to push us straight into the third world. At the turn of the century, the government was least involved in the market and we were extremely economically sound, hardly Third-world. Additionally, our immigration inflow was at its highest because, relative to the rest of the world, our working conditions were heavenly. Everyone takes the "child-labor/factory/minimum wage" issues at the turn of the century out of context.
Instead of embracing Canadian or European governments and politics which are rated highly on quality of life issues not just GDP we have a plan from a man who's ready to sell us out to an ever-scarier criminal capitalist machine.
Comrade, considering that countries like Canada and Sweden are admitting that the system is not working due to typical governmental waste and are turning into financial black holes which will eventually fail ALL people if left unchecked, I don't think it would be wise to emulate those countries. You should ESPECIALLY consider in your thoughts that the USA has the highest standard of living anywhere by far, and that includes our poor.
You're desire to promote Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt of philosophies such as Libertarianism belie your sadly specious reasoning.
Let me ask you this. Can you imagine what would have been invented if it weren't for the government? I'd say technology has made improvements IN SPITE of the government. One good example of government stifling of technology is encryption exporting.
Read this book: Geeks : How Two Lost Boys Rode the Internet Out of Idaho by Katz, and you'll understand that some people are bored and uncomfortable with sports and many types of social activities. The Internet and computers are a way of life and an unending source of intrigue and education for many people.Frankly, I'm sick of people saying what other people should do, as if playing sports is a priority in life and a tried and true way to become a "well-balanced" person. Personally, most jocks and/or die-hard sports fans are, IMO, the ones with their priorities backwards. They're just games. People writing programs, hacking computer systems to learn, and gleaning information from the web are bettering themselves intellectually. Sure, a little exercise, going out with friends, or dating is good now and then, but so is striving to learn more and more, and being totally swept up in a challenging project. If you asked me, you could take all the basketball, baseball, football players and fans and send them to some freakin' remote island and let them play games to their hearts' content and our national average I.Q. (US) would probably rise 50 points!

Heh, maybe if I move to Australia, I can get Jon Katz to write a book about me! How 1 Man and His Wife Rode the Internet from Chicago to Australia. ...Nah, I'm too boring!:) Anyways, I'll miss the cold weather and the snow...seriously!
First of all -- "YOU BAHSTAHD!":)
Secondly, do they have more people than work in Australia? Are there people covering for you while you're away? If I went anywhere on vacation my department would be screwed if anything went wrong. I think that's the problem with a lot of American companies, they don't have enough people because the job market is so tight, so less people have to do more work. Maybe that's different in Australia? If Australian companies were faced with a critical server being down, while the only person who knew how to fix it was in Tahiti for 2 weeks, would you think the culture would be different?
