My teachers did this to us in the mid-80s (grade-school for me) or so when one kid got hurt while playing tag. We had no 'playground' per se, only an open *paved* yard with some dirt. Tag was one of the few games we could actually play.
Did anybody sue? No. Did parents raise a fuss? Not that I know of. The reason for the ban? Lazy teachers plain and simple. They didn't like having to make sure that kids were playing friendly-like, and decided that nobody playing was easier to police.
Ugh. I'm getting very sick of applications determining when I *must* pay attention to them, rather than letting me determine when I will pay attention to them. It's far more prevailant under Windows, but Linux apps seem to be heading this way to. Is it any wonder I prefer the command-line? At least I don't have some xterm clamoring for my attention when it's ready for more input...
Amen! And for chrisakes don't steal the focus when I hit a site that requires login. I start firefox, load my previous session, start to do 'other things', and Firefox is popping in fron asking for authentication. Damned irritating. Stay in the background where I put you!
For the same reason robbing a store with a fake gun is still considered "armed" robbery. The threat was still seen as real. The phrase "don't take a knife to a gun-fight" also comes to mind here though...
Are you claiming that if it wasn't a conservative group complaining that the complaint would be valid then? If not, then *how* does their bias have any bearing on the truth of the claim?
Hint: It doesn't. A liberal group making the same claim would still be just as wrong.
And one of the tenets of a good argument is logic.
One must be careful though as the line between "considering the source" and "poisoning the well" is very thin. "He says he wants to lower taxes, but he's a *democrat* so he probably won't!" See what I mean? We hear this type of fallacy all the time. In fact, I would say that Hemos' note about WND being conservative was wholly unecessary and a good example of poisoning the well. Whether they are republicans, democrats, communists or fried eggs has no bearing on the truth of what they claim.
That's quite harsh. You're probably not a consultant who travels a lot. I've spent my share of time on the road alone working at client sites, it gets boring. Sometimes you work off-hours or weekends.
Being able to play WoW or some such really helps to kill the time while doing nothing at night.
You really should read past the first sentence in posts you're responding to... The "you" he spoke of is "plural" and "generic." Not *you* specifically. Technically he should hae said 'one' I suppose, but really - don't be a clueless ass.
Sure, it probably *can* be used to produce better/healthier food. But will it?
Now, be realistic. Seriously. Almost all food modifications have been done simply to increase 'yield' for the producer. And it's cheaper and easier to simply get rules/laws changed so you can declare the crap you already produce to be 'healthy' than it is to make your food actually more healthy. In fact many of the 'organic' labels on certain food items are all but meaningless so as organic foods become more popular (and they are, at least for dairy products and meat) I'd expect the major producers will start exploiting that further (slap a label on stuff you already make, charge more for the 'special' food).
Does looking at fine art also make you a better painter? I'd say practice, and being corrected meticulously by a good teacher (the latter being key). I had *one* good English teacher in all my years of school. He was my Freshman College Writing professor. Anal-retentive SOB who would mark your paper with so much red that you couldn't read what you'd written. I didn't realize how completely terrible my writing was until I took his course. My grammar still isn't great, but it's far better than before I took his class.
Prior to that course I'd only read great literature and was asked to comment on it by touchy-feely types who cared more about your ability to regurgitate their dogma than the structure and correctness of what you wrote. This was a useless waste of time by comparison.
What is it with Republicans and their extreme views?
They both do it, and they do it all the time. The Democrats will come up with a bill that gives more money to schools and if you vote against it you're "against education." They'll fail to mention the 'other' bits attached to the bill that have nothing to do with education however...
It's a tried and proven political tactic. One that works all to well on the stupid public though.
This is one of the most insightful posts I've seen here in a while. There are certainly pros and cons to each system (though most/.ers seem to ignore this).
It can also be noted that in the US any time a single party has gained a 'super majority' then that party has split to again make things a two-party system. I guess it's not as much fun without 'we vs. they'...
The losing party thinks election results are being modified by the winning party.
The winning party thinks the election results are just fine.
I never understood why people were so silly around here to think that the Republicans are the only dirty party? As far as I'm concerned, Al Gore is just mad that George Bush was able to 'modify' more votes than he could.
Aye, Eclipse has some nifty 'autocomplete' features (though I immediately turn off the ones that insert closing " and ) while I type - there is nothing more irritating than ending up with ");"); at the end of a line every-now-and-then. I'm fully capable of typing two or three extra characters!). But I still look for a decent free vi plugin for it. Would be the best of both worlds. Navigating code with the eclipse editor is a nightmare. I get the feeling Eclipse was designed with very *very* poor typists in mind.
One of my favorite ViM commands is 'o' (or 'O') to insert a new line below my current one (or above for 'O'). Doesn't matter where I am in the line, I get a new one below me. No needing to hit 'end' and then 'enter'.
Does QWERTY make sense? Does Dvorak make sense (the key layout, not the man!)? Think of using Vi(M) like learning to type again. At first things are confusing and difficult to find. But after a short time things become second nature.
But if you don't like it then quit yer bitching. Use something else...

So before I can point out your dirty laundry I must first display all of mine? I don't think so.
Even you don't do that in your post, ignoring Clinton having attorneys demand that "The Path to 9/11" not be aired.
Both sides are too dirty to begin the "who is more corrupt" game though. We all just lose...

Nobody does? Really? IBM? Novell? Noone? I somehow doubt that...

Yeah, poor kids. Who'd have thought that joining the ARMY could get you killed!
Wha ha ha ha ha ha! *sniff*
I invite you to test this theory. Let me know how that works out for you. :-)
I don't know about the Bible, but I hear it's common for many Muslims to memorize the Koran word for word.

Don't forget D&D! It was supposed to suck all those poor children into satanism!
Has it been that long since world war II? Certainly it's been a while. But Europe has a much longer lineage of threating the world than the US does...

Never! That's crazy talk!

That means almost 50% of the voters aren't getting represented at all.
Sure, if you completely ignore the Senate, the House of Representatives, and local/state government...
