    Every dollar that Microsoft makes in monopoly profits (i.e., every dollar that Microsoft makes that goes beyond what they would make in an efficient market) is money that's not available for public health, education, or development.

    Odd. So companies aren't taxed on profits then?

    I'm curious how they plan to let you get yourself out of an infinite portal loop like a portal in the floor the drops from the ceiling back into the portal in the floor.

    Looking at the video on their page it seems they'll allow it just fine. This game looks very nifty!

    On my Windows laptop that's exactly where it is. But I can't figure out why or how to do it on my Linux machines.

    I think there are many events that cannot simply be explained as "coincidence."

    Why not? Things with long-shot odds happen everyday. Somebody winning the 'jackpot' in a lottery has obscene odds (far worse than those two girls picking the same card) yet I don't hear people attributing ESP to it.

    And I'd bet that if MSFT offered you $$ for whatever you were making, and a fat paycheck with good bonuses - you'd be a fool to not take it...

    Good for SysInternals != good for me. I'm sure they're making out nicely. I frankly don't care whether they do or not. I want the same tools I've been getting for free.

    Very recently. It's up to the courts to determine that and while they do act a little more slowly than the legislature they do get around to it.

    We're locked up tighter than a drum here in the U.S. if we don't support Bush or the war in Iraq or anti-gay legislation, or anti-middle and anti-lower income tax breaks.

    It *has to* I believe. When you run xen, the "operating system" is xen, everything else runs on top of it. The question is whether Microsoft would need to be the 'privileged' guest or not.

    That line of ``public schools are bad'' is a myth spread by private schools

    And by those of us who have attended public schools. I don't think you realize just how many teachers are lazy and/or stupid. Some are just outright mean! I remember being derided in front of my 3th grade class about spelling my name wrong when the teacher was actually mis-spelling it! No worse a bully have I met than many of my teachers... You want your kids to socialize with other kids, sign 'em up for sports and camps.

    But it still has to be 'visible'. A package on a conveyor belt can't have it on the bottom, there can't be a sticker over it, etc.

    I didn't mean to imply that there was a single laser that needed perfect orientation of the barcode...

    That's a damned good question. The government has given absolutely zero reason why the chip on the passport needs to be accessed remotely. I'm sure there are plenty of solutions that would give the same information but require physical access to the passport. This is a stupid government "we're going to jump on a new technology because it is cool" trick.

    The whole *point* of RFID was to replace barcodes because on assembly line like systems the barcodes must be aligned properly with a laser that reads them. RFIDs don't have this issue.

    Yeah? Vegas used to be run almost entirely by mobs and gangs in the '70s. Even though (especially because?) gambling was legal. It's like I said - gambling needs to be *heavily* regulated. And today it is in Vegas.

    It doesn't harm people. Admitidly there are a few sad cases of people who don't know when to stop.

    Just pointing out that you contradicted yourself there. Gambling *does* harme *some* people. It's also notorious for being used by organized crime. I'm not actually against gambling per se, but there needs to be a *lot* of oversight in order to keep things "clean."

    There are two very big problems with what you've just written:

    • Not all minorities faced that situation
    • Some whites have faced that situation
    The problem with Affirmative Action is that it declares things based on race, not opportunities lost. That is the very *definition* of racism BTW. Frankly I wouldn't mind at all if a portion of scholarships went to folks who were *poor* regardless of race. Affirmative action assumes that all minorities are disadvantaged, and is very insulting. But it's racism "for your own good" so it will never end...

    I feel it's much more likely to backfire. MS already has a bad rep (lawsuits, Windows) and a corporate 'image.' Now they're slinging mud at the 'cool' kid with the nifty toys? It makes them look very bad. They need an original campaign (note: copying Apple would be a bad idea) with a positive spin on it. And for crissakes they need to stop using the word innovate!

    But time will tell.

    Maybe. The one thing that *kills* Creative is that their software is the most lousy crap I've ever installed. Unless they're doing something *very* different since I bought my Creative Jukebox. I've never seen such buggy unusable software in my life. Example: you couldn't recursively move directories to the device. And if you selected "too many" files to move at once it would crash. It's left such a bad taste in my mouth I've stayed away from anything with Creative on it since...
