I hate to point this out, but the old 'IRQ' arguments and 'third party driver' stuff is a touch old now. MS has done a great job of fixing most of those problems, unless you have older hardware.

Many people (myself included) prefere to be able to just replace 'parts' of their machine without needing to purchase a whole new computer. I happily upgraded my motherboard/cpu, but kept the rest of my machine. My friend, who uses a mac, lacks this option...

I'm not saying that you *can't* do more, just that things like the 'net will enable you do do more of what you already would. I don't think may people have truly changed their ways due to technology.

Consider the printing press. Changed the world? Yes, but the nature of people didn't change. Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I just think that humanity is stuck in it's ways, and technology becomes a tool to do more of what we do, rather than a motivator to do things 'better.'

It's not as difficult as you would think. On my project (10+ developers, 10+ analysts) we use a healthy blend of Perl, C++, Pro*C, PL/SQL, VB, Javascript (in web pages), and VB Script (asp pages).

We use the language that is best for the job. Multiple C++/Pro*C programs controlled by Perl scripts, calling PL/SQL functions on a database works surprisingly well for back-end batch processing.

The PL/SQL stored procedures can also be called by our VB GUI application! Code-reuse. :-)

I didn't get the impression that he was talking about using 5+ languages on a project. Two or three is perfectly reasonably, under certain circumstances.

I personally use Perl, C/C++, and PL/SQL in tandem with each other. Each language performs certain tasks better (or easier) than the other. I find this can make supporting the code 'simpler.' It's much easier to write a small PL/SQL stored proc for some actions than to muck around with C/C++ for the same task. And Perl is great for automating file movements (ftp files from a to b, run processes q and z on them).

Use what gets the job done. It's not *that* difficult to find developers who know 2 or 3 languages.
