    We have space travel. We can:
    1) Put up a satellite based internet system to provide cheap universal, high speed internet throughout the region
    2) Develop significant space based power platform to address our countries power needs
    3) Become the world's biggest manufacturer of exotic, zero-g materials.
    4) Put up a sun shield to demonstrate a reversible planetary cooling system.

    5) Take an expensive trip to Mars, where there's .... NOTHING! Whee! I vote for number 5. Break out the drinks!

    American dimwits took us to the moon where there's .... NOTHING! At least the Russians are smart enough to use their space program to make money.

    Feel free to elaborate. Why is this jingoistic? What obligates the USA to gift control of their inventions to the rest of the world, gratis? Are you under the impression that we have a moral obligation to turn over all of our technology to the rest of the world as we discover it because we should be nicer? How about nuclear technology?

    So, what's up? Why do you think what you do, whatever that is?

    It's the issue of control. The fact that they have their own hardware, doesn't, in my opinion, give them the right to control anything about the system outside of their own borders.

    If control is what they want, they should invent, and pay for the development of their own internet equivalent themselves. Right now, all they own is their own servers and communications infrastructure.

    The rules allow them to introduce any kind of irrelevant crap into any bill. There's no filtering process because there's no binary way to assess relevance and politicians apparently can't deal with ambiguity well enough to set up even simple heuristics, approved by vote.

    There's little evidence of intelligence in congress, even on the intelligence committee. After all, Michelle Bachmann is on it.

    More seriously, solar isn't going to substitute for the 160 exajoules provided to the world each year by oil any time soon, and transitioning to a lower energy culture isn't going to be painless. Still, it's better than nothing. Ubiquitous solar on every rooftop and on every building where it made sense would go a long way towards making powerdown less painful.

    I think you'd be surprised. A lot of people were leaning to McCain until Palin appeared. I expect that this was an intentional attempt by the Republican leadership to lose the election and I expect it to happen again. Romney is rumored to be considering Florida attorney general, Pam Bondi, who while not an idiot, is making even the conservatives gag (http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2012/07/28/youve-got-to-be-kidding-me-bondi-for-a-vp-pick-heck-no/).

    When the economy is bad, better to be the unblamed loyal opposition and keep the checks rolling into those offshore bank accounts for later reference, eh?

    in VMs, since Zorin doesn't require that I rewire my brain to its interface requirements. It's my surfing/writing/spreadsheet/media machine. I do everything but development on it. When I no longer need to develop for windows, I'll chuck the Windows VMs. The transition was remarkably painless.
