This is not a pure news website as it is a news forum with a stated technological and scientific bias. Religion and science are becoming more and more incompatible and I am not only talking about evolution but also neurobiology, biologically based sociology, etc...
The reason for this is that Surfers attention span is also about four seconds, so if the page takes longer to load, they forget what they where doing...
Microsoft is starting to lose ground on the desktop. Apple is eroding market share from the top with expensive, trendy systems. Linux is coming from the bottom with the tech savy crowd that wants something flexible and Free.
It could backfire. Chinese don't like being told off. I think they are actually trying to get rid of Microsoft as much as they can.
With the WGA (Windows genuine advantage) ramping up, we are getting to a situation in which the administrator of WGA in the USA can, with the flip of a switch, stop the economy of any country that relies too much in Windows. I think that is the reason China is pushing Linux so much. Windows is a liability to their national security.
If you think this is exaggerated, just think about the ridiculous reactions on Lenovo laptops being used by the US State Department. If the Chinese government where to react in the same line as the USA government, they would ban outright all Microsoft products.
This has to do with WGA. With a service pack, you can just burn a cd, install Windows XP without the network plugged and then upgrade the installation to the latest SP without having to connect to the network.
M$ doesn't want you to be able to do that. They want you to use the network updater so they can test the validity of your license.
Whether you are in a highly secure setting without internet access or behind a modem in a 3rd world country, they don't care. They want to check your license.
Should mozilla not exist, there would be no IE7 team. The IE7 team must be glad that mozilla keeps releasing new versions so they can keep their jobs. Without competitive pressure M$ left 5 years pass without a IE release.
I am surprised that ICANN hasn't removed their DNS entry like they are about to do for spamhaus.com. I am sure they can be sued in the USA for copyright infringement.
At $4.85 per tablet, once a day, that is about $150 a month. This certainly can't be afforded by all of those 20 million people, but the ones that can, will make for nice profits for the company. I just hope that they lower the price a bit in the future. With this huge potential market, they should be able to.
For a long time, people using JACK (a low-latency audio server, written for POSIX conformant operating systems such as GNU/Linux and Apple's OS X) have been using real time linux patches to achieve better results. So for this kind of pro audio users, using Linux workstations (not embedded linux) it is quite nice to have included in the official kernel.
After the manufacturing sector imploded and now the services sector is hit by outsourcing, the only strongly exportable products produced by the American economy are linked to IP. The problem is that for this to work, the rest of the world has to adopt USA IP laws, and most countries know it goes against their best interest, so they are not very enthusiastic about it.
The European Parliament doesn't have as much power in Europe as it should. This kind of issues are decided, at the end of the day, by the states foreign ministers and they will not piss USA off.
Yes, I realize that a lot of people play video games for fun and moderate their time spent well. But dont we all know people who play endlessly because they want to be the best on their server or be in a clan that wins a lot of tournaments?
Yes, that is called a hobby and there are lots of them. I don't think it is bad if you can combine it with the rest of your life.
"develop capabilities, plans, and options to ensure freedom of action in space" means defense. "and, if directed, deny such freedom of action to adversaries" means attack capability.
I personally don't like the "attack" part as it leads to a space arms race and the militarisation of space.
Fear of the unknown can cause major problems (like WMD in Iraq).
I hate to break it to you, but the iraq invasion was not caused by lack of knowledge. It was actually the fact that Bush new that Iraq didn't have any meaningful WMD that allowed the invasion.
Countries with real WMD like North Korea dont get invaded. If you disregard the US rethoric, invading Iraq has sent the message that you need WMD in order to keep the americans at bay. That is why Iran and NK pursue them as fast as they can.
Al Quaeda is not going to last for ever, you know? they need a solid and real danger to wave in front of the US population in order to take more civil rights away. Apparently, China is second in the list.
This is absolutely irrelevant. In real terms, most people see system crashes due to malware entering the machine. Is Microsoft doing something about security? something effective, because if they aren't, Vista will not change anything. Microsoft has *always* had security as a second thought. I am not expecting that to change.
"Deciding what to trust and who to trust is a problem that Google can't solve in general."
What you are talking about is the problem of authority.
Before, we used to delegate authority on newspapers, radio and TV. When they tell us something, we assume that it has been researched and that is somehow accurate. The problem with this approach is that you need to Trust them, and history has shown us that this trust is sometimes misplaced (see prewar Nazi propaganda).
The effect of the internet is that we have more sources of information, not as authoritative, but also, not controled by special interests, so you decide what to trust. In my opinion, this is the best of the possible situations, but it will probably end toguether with net neutrality, when big corporations control the flow of information again.
If google where to succeed with their system, you would be placing your trust on their algorithm, something that would take you back to the original problem. Do you trust Google?

Actually, if people is too stupid to punch all the way through a card, maybe it's a good thing they can't vote...
Will a 10 years old kid go to trial if he posts anonymously on a forum like slashdot?

Things look good

Agreed.
Real, boring, bank type work is picking up, and although it is not very exciting, it is _very_ well paid.
A web start up needs to compete with that.
Not in one go.

- conspicuously repeating the cult-like phrase "recommends Windows XP Professional" in all marketing;
- never advertising PCs sold without an operating system, or with an alternative OS installed;
- applying Windows stickers to all PCs sold, and using a keyboard with a prominent Windows key.
Doesn't this go against the terms of the antitrust settlement with the DOJ?
Gattaca

the DBus is specially nice as it is a standard from freedesktop.org and is used in gnome as well.

Sony is starting to sound like the underdog.
