Not funny at all, but again tells the story of loser nerds and a beautiful young girl which is portrayed as a !loser.

Probably I will modded down to magma by this comment but here I go...

Say you came up with an extremely complex and successful method for X... where X is an area you spent your phd on it and spent years to become an expert. ex: speech/image/video/signal/audio/any data processing.. In the end, this method will be composed of some math and a software. Now what is wrong if you said that 'I spent all my life on this. I don't want anybody just use it and reach exactly the same position in the market'.

People are wrongly pissed with patents, because so many annoying people go and patent ridiculous ideas (ex: 1-click shopping). Patents are important for a tech market to thrive... but not the stupid ones. At least let's make an effort to distinguish those.

In the past, the basic science was led by companies like Bell. They could reason the money they spent with the lack of innovation in the field. Now the basic science is led by universities -- exactly how it is supposed to be. Companies can have their problem worked on by paying a fraction of what they pay to their employees (in academia these people are named either phd student or postdoc). My wife is a postdoc and their projects are funded by the industry. They are trying to solve very theoretical problems. The company couldn't explain spending money on this to their shareholders, but now they can explain it with industry-academia partnership. Academia wins, industry wins. Also, we saw this before when MERL closed part of its research lab. Didn't you notice where most departing researchers go? Yes, academia.

Also it is beyond my understanding that someone tells us that what is being done is good for them without seeing there, talking to anyone working there. Don't you think it is way too arrogant to "know" what is good for them?

The reason is not being free or anything else. The reason is that Linux is difficult for the average user. I had a new laptop and it took me three days to connect my wireless at home. I spent hours on Google, in newsgroups and forums. So, how can we expect an average user to do the same thing? Like it or not, doing the same operation (i.e., connecting to my wireless) under Windows took a split second.

Computer is a tool to do things for most of people. For them, which ever is the easiest is the best solution. Who cares it costs money? If their can do their job with it, they will (and do) spend money.

Final note: I have high hopes for Ubuntu to solve these problems, and become more end-user-friendly.
