  1. Re:Movie doesn't show anything on First Psystar Mac Clones Ship · · Score: 1

Seems like a KVM switch could do the job, and there are many other ways to fake this. That said, there are hackintosh boxes out there that run OSX with non-Apple hardware so it's certainly possible this is legit. I just find it hard to believe that Psystar isn't a hoax/fraud after all the shenanigans with their changes of address etc.

I find the Sugar interface a bit clumsy, but what exactly does that have to do with "open-source" (god forbid anyone use the term "free software")?

These sound like bullshit excuses for pushing M$ crapware and throwing proprietary plugins on the OLPC. Is Gnash really not sufficient? Is Flash that important for the target users, many of whom will only connect to a local mesh network? Or did the focus of the OLPC shift to U.S. consumers when I wasn't looking?

Since when is the international community afraid of FOSS? The reality seems quite the opposite (and that resource is a bit dated, I know FOSS adoption has gone up since).

Many new models of monitors are glossy, so this isn't just a laptop problem. But monitors don't have their screen inside the case of the computer, so it's an easier fix :)

It's tough to get a decent laptop with a non-glossy screen without buying a Thinkpad (or figuring out which few Dell models don't have it). I just bought a System76 Pangolin, which is awesome except for the glossy screen (and the Windows logo on the keyboard)...

  12. Re:Why I'm still with Windows on Gartner Analysts Warn That Windows Is Collapsing · · Score: 1

"Why can't I just download a piece of software and double-click on it to install?!?!"

A package manager is waaay more efficient than the method you describe, and it allows for better security since you're downloading from trusted sources. If you want to be able to double-click to install programs, there's Click N Run.

"What is the difference between KDE and Gnome and why should it matter?!?!"

The default Ubuntu install has Gnome so most users never worry about this, and I imagine some users will install KDE programs without ever knowing they're even KDE programs. But diversity is extremely important in software. Having multiple desktop environments, or even just multiple programs that do similar things, should not be viewed as a problem. Developers have different ideas and goals in mind, just as users do. Almost every distro will choose one desktop environment and one program for a specific purpose as the default. There's no reason for the FOSS community to get together and pick "the best" of each distro or desktop environment or type of program, nor could there possibly be any way of doing this.

Hell, until the latest release, Ubuntu wouldn't even let me attach a projector without a complicated edit to the Xorg config file.

Well, I guess they've implemented better support for those devices just as they have for many, many more in the time I've used Ubuntu. Drivers and device configuration have been a consistent problem, for obvious reasons, but there has been great work done to overcome this. Imagine what could be done if the FOSS community had the advantages that Microsoft and Apple have?

Windows may die one day, but it's going to take a *lot* more work before anyone else is going to slay that dragon.

...now imagine there were an alternate way to develop software, where people with opinions like yours could influence the development process more directly, who were also encouraged to contribute directly. And if you didn't like the direction a project was going, you could fork it and go in your own direction (dumping Carbon, getting rid of "GUI bullshit", whatever). I wonder what they would call that.

Don't attribute these problems to laziness. There is a power dynamic at work here, one inherent to proprietary software.

  14. Re:Obsolete in a year? on A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux · · Score: 1

I've helped many friends/family members switch to Ubuntu in the past few years, and having a nice book to read is a great introduction, even just for the few "What is Ubuntu?" "What is Linux?"-type paragraphs. It can also make for a nice gift, and having something to accompany an install CD really helps take some of the fear out of installing a new OS (rather than handing them a CD I burned). That said, I think the advice you give is good for most users with some tech experience and good search/Web literacy.
