If ownership of natural resources is predicated on adding value through labor, by what right does one add labor in the first place? Without adding the labor, one does not own the resource, therefore, one is stealing by adding one's labor to a resource one doesn't own.

To be able to steal a resource it has to be owned. What you're describing is how acquisition of unowned resources work. Stealing requires ownership.

If you were serious with the above I suggest you don't skip the step where you show why a resource can't be unowned and/or read more about classical liberalism. If it was a troll then congratulations for reeling me in.

I didn't read the rest of the post due to the errors in the first paragraph. I'm not really interested in a debate until you acquire rudimentary knowledge of the subject you're trying to criticize.

  11. On one level that's true, but practically speaking it isn't. Practically speaking, everyone who grows up in a racist system is racist whether they "want to be" or not. THAT is the difference between a liberal (who recognizes this) and a libertarian (who truly believes that they can in fact not be racist). Not being racist in a racist system isn't just not lynching a black person when the opportunity arises, it is also working to ensure that EVERY subjective decision is made without regard to race even when the default "normal person way of doing it" is racist to some degree.

If someone doesn't act in any way racist they are, for all intents and purposes, not racist. If I think about killing people and never act on it I'm no more of a murderer than someone who's never had a violent thought in their life.

I'm still not sure what you're trying to say.

A banker can handle every loan application in a professional manner but statistically still favor white borrowers over black borrowers, it would only require them to discriminate in the cases of marginal applications. The only way to really combat this kind of systemic racism is with statistical tools to locate where it occurs and then train people NOT to trust their instincts in those cases. Treating a banker who doesn't realize that when they are making subjective decisions that those decisions are coming out disproportionately in favor of people who resemble them, treating that banker as the moral equivalent of a hooded KKK member won't solve anything.

As long as you're not in favor using force against the banker I agree fully. Irrational behavior should be counteracted.

I've never seen a libertarian deny that culture (as in the culture in the southern states during the 40's was racist) exists or influences action. If you have I'd very much like to see or hear an example.

  12. I apparently ignore words when I feel like it, in this case I ignored the word Slashdot. I'm sorry for the redundancy and agree with you completely. Using the word liberal without qualifiers on Slashdot is asking to be misunderstood.

  13. It should've been clear that I was talking about the original definition of the term as the American definition is the opposite of minarchist.

I think the Americans should be the ones to invent their own word or perhaps even use the correct term (social liberal). Most (?) of the western world uses the original definition so the onus is on the yanks. But that'll never happen and asking either party to use a term with so many syllables is asking too much.

  14. Not trying to be racist is equivalent to being racist if one acts racist. If there isn't a single racist individual person acting racist there can be no racism, systemic or otherwise.

I think you need to elaborate or rephrase.

  15. That's what I said. You might want to look the word minarchist up.

  16. Re:If you... on Researchers Claim To Be Able To Determine Political Leaning By How Messy You Are · · Score: 2, Insightful

That's just plain wrong. Liberal means minarchist with various opinions on exactly how much the state should be allowed to do. Libertarian includes both anarcho-capitalists and various flavors of minarchists. Neither term has anything to do with with how social the individual should or can be.

As spoken by someone who haven't used any of them. With the possible exception of the kindle every one of the post librie e-readers handle what I'd call open formats (i.e. PDF, RTF and more). I've about 100 books on my Sony PRS-500 at the moment with the source being many different file formats (RTF DOC HTML TXT LIT) gotten over IRC. All of them have been converted to the Sony's native format with an open source front end (Calibre). So using any format as a source on the Sony PRS isn't a problem.

As for the single purpose of the device it's for people who read a lot of books and like e-ink reflective screens and the battery time they provide. The only real problem with the PRS-500 is that the contrast is lower than I'd like (black on grey) and you need to avoid glare. Other than that I consider it superior to paper books. If you're not in the target group, don't buy one and wait for screen technology to evolve further.

It doesn't. Equal application does not necessarily mean equal coverage. eg everybody is equally subject to car registration if they have car, if sombeody doesn't have a car they aren't covered by the requirement.

It's equal in that the majority decides. Too bad they decided against you. If it helps they all chip in some of their own money as decided by vote but I don't see how that makes it less wrong. You don't get to chose whether to be taxed or how your tax money is spent. That is the very point of taxes.

It all depends on how the decisions are made, how they are applied, and the relative social burden and reward.

In more or less the same way they are now but on a smaller scale and dealing with smaller things. Instead of infrastructure you get a communal washing machine.

There is no easy answer, and it's a question that gets answered differently by each society. Socialism, feudalism, and free markets are all forms of stable econimic policy, the "rightness" of each is a matter for social debate. Further the question you ask isn't one just of taxation, but one of rule of law in general. The same discussion can be applied in criminal cases. At what point do the "12 angry men" go too far taking a person's freedom away. It was also something examined during the fight for equal rights in the 60's. In the US the debate goes back to the Federalists vs Anti-Federalists, where the Anti-Federalists feared the power of the state granted by the Constitution. This was answered by the Bill of Rights, and has been expanded in subsequent amendments. The ultimate answer comes to what individuals are willing to accept to be included as part of society, and what level of return they feel they get.

That's not really an answer. I'm not asking about the exact amount of taxation.

I'm guessing that we both agree that someone who violates another persons rights lose their own rights. Exactly which of them and for how long is up for debate. The fact that they have forfeited some of their rights is not (i hope). What I'm asking is not how long a prison sentence should be or how the justice system should be composed. I'm asking whether one can should actually have a justice system. Of course this is keeping your analogy to show why what you wrote isn't an answer. This isn't really my opinion on personal rights.

You seem unable to explain how something goes from robbery to being taxes and how one can delegate a right one does not have. I on the other hand can tell you exactly when taxation goes ceases to be robbery which is never. I could also tell you why I think so. I'd really appreciate it if you'd try again with a different argument or rephrase if I misunderstood it completely.
