Personally, I don't think someone as bright and selfless as Linus could do this. And to bring up a question like this in itself a slap on the face. How can you ever say anything like that to anyone ? If Lenardo da' vinci destroyed all his paintings it would have had most effect on him himself. Though MS recomends using the supplied nylon straps, the users are free to use networking cables of phone line cables. However that would void the license agreement.
Users are also warned that the new software would explode if the user tries to un-tie the strap.
The the user wishes to use two computers, he would not only have to buy two liscences, but would also need a double-stacker on his back which can stack two computers at the same time. Tough it would be advisable to use a Terminal Switch to switch between two machines, the user can carry around two monitors if he or she wishes.

I hope that helps... MS is also comming out with a computer game called, ms-football. The computers which are made for the game are made of titanium alloy and are mounted "tie"d to the back of the player. The objective of the game is to finish the game without breaking straps which tie you to the computer.

  10. SSH/SSL is still better off than nothing at all on The Continuing End of SSH/SSL · · Score: 5

I think this issue is not new. And every Admin who has installed SSH knows this drawback. However SSH/SSL is still better off than non-encrypted channel any day. It is definitely not acceptable for an E-Commerce solution. I don't think I'll ever transfer a million dollars using SSL technology. Its too much of a risk still. I don't care how many bits it supports.

I have implemented Cache engines/proxy servers. And its pretty simple to setup a trojan there which could in theory decrypt SSL... I think we will see more of these kinds of trojan attacks over SSL in the near future. There is not much one can do to avoid it. Nothing that I can think off.

Since the number of keys are exponentially rising I think some work needs to be done in refining the implementation of this technology.

    1. To begin with, as the author of this article says, Force Expiration of all keys. No key should exist for ever. Its like junk yard in space after the satellites break down. The junk has to be removed eventually. Its better if we start now.

    2. I think some time back there was some work done in distributing PGP keys in DNS records. This could in effect make SSH more secure. If I were to use the KISS principle I'd make SSH clients to auto-register its keys in the local DNS somehow.

    3. Same with SSL. By default Browsers should reject SSL keys if its not signed by a CA. Exceptions could be made if it can be verified atleast by using a reverse lookup on DNS.. or something like that. However that doesn't mean that the proxy server cannot sniff DNS requests and forge it too... NEway... its just an idea. May be we should reject everything not signed by a CA.

OK.. that were weird ideas... I don't think anyone can be serious enough to go all the way, because I personally can't think of implementing such a complicated solution for my clients.

    1. Open source is only as much chaotic as the maintainers want it to be. I've tried developing for open GNU products and belive me when I say it, it is a pain in the *** to get a patch built into the main code for some people, and for the others the maintainers don't even think twice. Still there are others where 10 different groups have 10 different tree of the same code and try to merge them every few months... this is chaotic. However the linux kernel is one of the best maintained opensource projects I've noticed... if you could just imagine how many people are contributing to it you would appretiate what "linux" actually means.

2."Trust" again is a weird word. Do you trust MS on Office2000 ? How do you know they don't have a code in there which will turn you into a borg ? Atleast I'm sure linux kernel doesn't have anything like that... and millions of people who have seen, studied, and written to the code can vouch for it.

3.Again, the word opensource need not mean that the development is also opensource. I think there are too many journalists out there who mixup words like "opensource", "open development" and "freeware". Whats common to all opensource is that it can be seen and studied by everyone. MSIE is free, but not open at all. And the problem of "trust" which you spoke about involves only in situations where development is also open. For example Plan 9, from lucent is a closed development... (I think this is a good example).

The way I look at it is that, if something is not chaotic then its probably invisible to you. Nothing in this world is perfect... chaos is a relative term... and I don't care if linux development is chaotic... 'cause it works for me.

    4. I hear that Cyber laws are already in effect in India, and that credit card transaction, which was no no without a physical signature is now used widely on Indian internet sites.

    5. China has been politically forcing ISPs to filter sites based on content, and I hear that in India too goverment has made an effort to block some sites. Some examples of sites blocked are those providing voice over IP. However I'm yet to hear of goverment taking up action to close down sites due to cultural reasons.

    6. There have been a few incidents of local goverment bodies shutting down some movies due to cultural impact, but it has little impact as the Supreme court has always managed to do justice at the end.
