    Even better, try smtp-auth. There is ZERO reason to run an open relay. People doing so should be shot, blacklisted, and rooted.

    Unaware? Why the fuck didnt he check his smtp logs and notice all the 553's ? When you hit a mail server that rbl's you, it sends you a 553 bounce.
    Also, many user's mail servers will notify the sender of the bounce and give them a copy of the bounce message so they know why it got bounced.

    Collateral damage is why you NEVER ever host your servers with a spam friendly outfit. Our company recently hosted a client's email server, and the FIRST thing we did was run the colo against every blacklist we could think of. We also asked them their policy on handling abuse emails, and spammer termination. Read news.admin.net-abuse.email , its full of good info on how to avoid spam friendly hosters.

    rbl all the way........why waste a single fucking bit of network bandwidth on spammers?

    If anything, i am militant above and beyond RBL's......

    i add entire colo's to my port 25 blocking firewall if they host spam hauses. If their hosting spammers, then i dont need ANY of their smtp traffic.

    interesting to say the least. The professional version of XP has been pirated before day 1 due to leaked corporate cd-keys (and now key gens that crank out corporate keys). Product activation has been a total failure for MS, as large companies such as yourself REFUSE to use it, there by giving warez bandits the methods necessary to spread XP all over the place.

    The bank robbery scene in HEAT. If you watch this, watch it on a EXTREMELY loud 5.1 (or better) speaker setup. You can FEEL the 5.56 rounds whizzing by your head. This scene justifies surround sound like no other does.

    is this a patch i should have installed on my various linux servers? I understand any new code should be tested on a development server before being moved to production, but assuming this patch doesnt cause any problems, is it something thats worth the time and effort to help reduce buffer overflows ?

    I have used the retail HSF in the past with no probs, i just ditch that crappy thermal pad. When i've had to fix over heating machines, its been people who purchased some box at a local screwdriver shop.

    In any case, i find the third party HSF's to be more suited to my tastes. I can get quality copper HSF's for 15 or so. Usually the retail chips are 20-30 more then the oem's, so i save money and get a better fan in any case.

    first of all, i've seen quite a few systems that use
    just the heatsink and the crappy thermal pad on the heat sink with no grease, and they overheat easily.

    On the 100+ machines (all amd) i've built for clients (including a pile of rack mounted servers), i've always removed the worthless thermal pad, and used artic silver III, and i've NEVER had a overheating problem.

    This is one recommendation from the manufacter i'd encourage everyone to ignore. Instead, read the overclocker sites for how to properly cool your cpus. I dont overclock myself, but i think the oc'ers have a good handle on cooling.

    i'll admit it, and i'm damn proud of it. There was a time when i bought all the music i listened to. And then, the riaa and mpaa started taking away some of my civil rights. The riaa and mpaa ,by virtue of assaulting every american's basic rights, have given up their right to make any sort of profit what so ever. So believe me, i'll be the first to load up on every mp3 and dvd i find suitable from the most convienient p2p program availible.

    As a side note, if any of the artists i like happen to ever start selling their music directly to the public in the form of mp3's without the damn riaa getting a cut, i'll gladly pay. Until then, i'll continue to fuck the riaa in as many creative ways i can think of.

    In short, I am sure the open source community (the Openbsd guys and the linux netfilter team) have, or will shortly release mods to fill any nat detection gear. And i am sure the various nat box makers and rebadgers (linksys, netgear, etc) will soon have a tidy check mark with the text label next to it saying "Hide all computers from greedy isp and big brother government agency? (y/n) "

    granted this doesnt free you from microsoft totally, but you can terminate exhange with extreme prejudice
    and use Mdaemon with its add on Groupware (no, not the novell thing) feature. Still not cheap, but much less costly then exchange's license, and Mdaemon is WAY more stable to boot. Plus, mdaemon runs NICELY on a slow 2k professional box (my current setup is a k6-2 400 with 128 megs ram), as opposed to exchange NEEDING 2k server, massive ram, and nightly backing because it eats the user database with almost religious like devotion.

    sorting 5000 some msgs with imap is insanely slow from my experience. Your pop connection was slow because either their mail server is slow, or the connection between you and the mail server is slow.

    spam hauses (hope thats the right way of spelling plural spam haus). And based on my mail/firewall logs, these are 50% of the time hosted by XO, Verio, Level 3, and C&W, with C&W being by far the worst. If these companies either stopped carrying spammers, or if everyone and their mom blacklisted these fools (check blackholes.us for a kick ass listing of various ip ranges for these hosters) and used spews and spamcop on their mail servers (content filtering in my opinion isnt the cure, your still wasting bandwidth accepting the crap, why not bounce it right away with a rbl?) , the spam problem would drop considerably.

    pop3 is really quick and has little overhead.

    Imap can bring a server to a crawl, espcially if your lusers er clients are trying to sync every porn spam they've recieved in the last 10 years with the latest bug ridden copy of outlook they insist on running.

    to a certain point, i agree with you. Open source often is a bitch to install and configure, and lacks a certain amount of "Finess"

    But usually its a HELL of a lot more stable, and reliable. I am patiently waiting for the day when linux (or bsd) hits the point where its polished, relatively seamless, and doesnt take massive tweaking and configuring to get it to work just right. Until then, I'll put up with the hassle, because i'd rather spend the time tweaking it, then dealing with M$, exchange, IIS, etc

    usually because lusers load their boxes up with spyware and a whole bunch of other shit that autoloads, which causes massive problems with any major upgrade. I've plonked sp1 on a whole lot of different machines, and its been my experience that as long as the underlying os is fairly clean and not
    mucked with 8 tons of garbage (the above mentioned spyware), it installs fine.

    after the sb live fiasco a few years ago, i think anyone who uses creative is nuts. There are much better alternatives, such as the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, or Hercules Game Threater or Fortissmo III.
