You know, with answers like:
Why did you leave Microsoft?
It was time for a change and the opportunity was too good to resist. And I managed to convince my wife that we're in a place where we can take on a little more risk
and
Did Microsoft ever keep you from posting something?
No, the decision to post or not post content on the blog was always my decision and the buck always stopped with me. That was part of what made the role great and kept it interesting for 2 years. or
What are you most excited about in the roadmap for Vista?
Frankly, I think Windows Vista has gotten a bum rap, as I use it every day - even after having left MS - and I would have a hard time using anything else and still be as productive. I'd call this the ANTI-slashdottish article. When he announced his departure, people on this place began speculating about how the poor gut "got sacked" or "was tired of defending Vista crap", etc....:-))))))
Not a surprise, really. I run 3 Windows Servers 2003 at my work and they , in combination with IIS6 are a great piece of software. Amazingly lightweight to be a GUIed server and actually, rock solid.
I run a some OS software on it, and commercial as well, of course, being ideologically agnostic as I am.
I really don't see the news value in this article, so...
Let's forget the ethical side of the question. Yes, we all know that you should not be "pushed" to install a software by budling it *as a default* option. Let's forget about that even if I am sure that many will defend that action just because it's from Abble.
The problem is that, what would happen if, for example, MS would now bundle a hypotethical new IE8 for Mac as default with, say, a popular Media Player coded for the Mak? The screams of "foul", monopoly", etc would be heard in the Artic.
Abble has a history of forcing it's products to Windows user (Quick Time pro bugging, anyone?) so this is no surprise for anyone, but it should be inacceptable , be it Abble, Google (yes, Google toolbar, it's about you!) or whoever does it.
I travel to Cuba twice a year. Yes, MS cannot sell a thing to Cuba and Caba cannot legally obtain MS products.
Cuba is almost isolated in their computer net so compatibility of formats and documents should n't be a problem. They are also communist. You'd think: that's an ideal enviroment for Linuzz. It should be natural to see Open Office, Linuzz, GIMP, etc on evry machine.
Well, think again: everybody (normal users and the goverment) use pirated Windows, MS Office, Photoshop, etc.
Now seriously, I can't remember how many times I have been flamed just because I state that I don't like OSX. I really detest the whole philosofy behind the shiny surface of OSX. And JUST because that, I have been called everything. It's like some people think that it's IMPOSIBLE that one person could dislike OSX. So I don't like a single menu bar for ever application? HOW can THAT be posible? That's the Abble experiece, and they SURE know better than the insignificant shit I am.... Oh well....
Why is that a surprise? Remember that XBox uses..surprise: DirectX. DirectX is used on both: a PC and a console. The guy is just stating an opinion that you, as a good slashdotter, are trying to over-analyze.
Nothing is "better" than nothing... I like "Lost", you like "Heroes"... None of them is perfect. The same is true with any OS/Tool/Religion, whatever... Keep your taste for yourself, man and let other use what they want.
me think that all Linuzz distros are concentrating toooooo hard to be a Windows replacement and to get more and more Windows users, when the thing they should do is to keep being a better Linuzzz for Linuzzz user and let Windows users be Windows Users or Mak users and whatever.
Hell, even there are some wise words somewhere out there that say "Linuzz is not Windows, and it's not trying to be". Well, let keep things so. If I want to use Linuzz I will do so because I want to use it by it's values not because it is a Windows clone. That's one thing. Another thing: as a Linuzz contributor (which, believe it or not, I am), i couldn't care less about how many users I will get...
Oh, believe me... More than one person here have shout "IDIOT" to me just because I use Windows. Well, I have a Mac at home too, but I don't like OZX at all. I find it annoying and I have been a mac user since 1992. Go and figure.
The think is.. I dislike the whole filosophy of "use it because it's free"
Well, guess what: I use WINRAR and have payed for it. I know about 7zip but I prefer to use Winar. I use The bat as a mail client. I know about several good free clients but I pay proudly for the bat. I pay for Windows Commander and there are a lot of equally good alternatives. So what? There profession of programmers has the same right like a carpenter or a builder. There is NO SHAME in programming and selling some program. There is nothing wrong with commercial programs.
I am a consult and I use OZX, Windows and Linuzz and actually feel better with Windows, and worse on a MAK. Linuzz being in the middle just because there is a lot of things you can change.... But anyway, I'll keep paying the "MS tax" as it's called here, and proudly so, until I really find something else that I like better.
I can tell you the real reason why I DON'T use Linuzz or OZX: Because i'm perfectly happy with Windows. Well, of course not *perfectly*, but almost. And yes, it's a locked platform, it cost, it's not free, etc. But i don't care, i also payed for my Nissan and my bacon... And ideology? I don't care for idealistic ideologies. I'm a happy Windows user, yes, and proud of it.
Hmm.. I though here in Slashdot many people deny that there are more succesful attacks in Windows just because it is the more popular platform. So now, in this case it **is** true that there are more succesful attacks on Apache just because it is the more populat server. Well, come on people...
Nice to see that there are Linuzz people out there that are not the archetypical rabious MS hater, but normal civic developers that want to solve the problems with cooperation and work, and not with screams of "foul!!" or "M$ is teh suck" or "Death to Closed source! (but not mine closed source, BTW)", etc.
I agree. And THAT is exactly why people should NEVER, I repeat NEVER advocate blindly for some product.
Let people use what they want and are used to. It's really annoying when you are in some newsgroup and some poor soul comes asking for help for "how can I convert a jpg to bmp?" and some idiot just jumps "just install Linuzzz" or "you should buy a Mak"... it was funny from the beginning but for Bowser's sake, just use your energy to help that person and pur your own preferences aside!
Remember, what you like is hated by someone else, so preferences are just that: preferences. Use the tool you like and down with all religious (software and literal ones)
It's not the first time music has been represemted as mathematical equations, or even as a random events. Hell, even Bach experimented by throwing a pair of dices while composing some of his most popular baroque parts.
That's the kind of things people cannot understand on/. Here you are always "there" or always "here". You are always black or always white. There cannot be middle tones.
Fortunatly there is a worls out there and there are people like Miguel and a lot others that are human (and not Stallbots) and are somewhere in the middle, can make mistakes, can change their minds and are not so afraid of being politically correct in the eyes of the "community" (oh, what a horrible word).
This (excessively dense and and pretentious) article is just a philosofic one. The man is just theorizing about what "intellectual" is and what "property" is , etc, the same way Karl Marx discussed what "the capital" is or what "the worker class" is not.
The answer to everything is as always very simple. Yes: intellectual property does exist, whatever Stallman or other crazie commies say, what I generate with my brain is MY intellectuall property and thus, I can choose to share it, protect it or commercialize it without Stallman or anyone else calling me a criminal for that.
There is no worthless information. NEVER. I may not be able to reproduce the beer formula or use it, but the knowlegge about how a certain beer is made will be very useful to me. Believe me: I made my own (tasteless) beer.
Hmmm.. and how is that bad? I love Pilsner bear and i don't know the formula. I enjoy it anyway. But if they could give out the formula for me to check out how it is done I would be overjoyed. Knowledge, my friend is the real treasure, not the often overrated Open Sources "liberties".
And if it's their choise to use Windows, you have not even the right to try to install Linuzzz or OZX on their computers. Let people use what they wat for pete's sake!
MS is obligated to patent more and more (even trivial) things first. Just in case.... I would do the same.
It was time for a change and the opportunity was too good to resist. And I managed to convince my wife that we're in a place where we can take on a little more risk

Bad advertising? Who cares that an underpowered overpriced computer is not living up to the expectations. Who cares? Itä's Abble. Look, man, SHINY!!!!

I wonder why... (or not)

kdawson. What a surprise!

See? So easy.
Oh no? Try slighty modifying "Harry potter" and selling your new book comercially. Good luck.
Well, don't read any book then. Almost everyone of them is copywrited.
