HP's reinstall DVD/recovery partition installs the crapware.:(
Dell gives you an actual OS disk that *only* installs the OS. Go Dell! I'm a big fan of Dell because of this. I bought an HP (never doing THAT again!) and the only way I could make it usable was to re-install Vista from the DVD that came with my Dell.
I wish that AdBlock had a blacklist setting, instead of just the whitelist setting. Frankly, there's only 2-3 websites on the entire Internet I want to use AdBlock with, and it's a pain in the ass to turn it on and off all the time.
Plus, I think that mode would be a good compromise with all the sites that are so against the concept-- let users have an easy way to just turn off the sites they don't like, instead of having to keep all sites off all the time. I mean, yeah, in theory you can turn the tool on and off manually on a per-site basis, but the reality is that most people are too lazy to do that and they'll just keep it on all the time and never whitelist the sites they genuinely appreciate.
Some people want to read only confirmation of their existing opinions. Some other people want their opinions challenged. In both cases, they'll find more material they like online than they ever would in a newspaper.
Except he specifically mentioned Netbooks, all of which come with *at least* 512 MB. And I think the vast majority ship with a gig or more now.
If he had meant old notebooks, I'm assuming he would have typed old notebooks.
Anyway, people who use ancient notebooks aren't likely to bother to upgrade their version of Windows, so, frankly, why should Microsoft give a crap about you? You're not their customer. Despite that, I wager Windows 7 on your 1 GB machine would run as well as XP.
That's the wrong way to go. Better would be to implement something like Windows Live Sync, an easy-to-use file-sharing application that goes over the Internet instead of requiring extremely complicated local network setup. (It still sends at LAN speeds if it detects both computers are on the same network, natch.)
Imagine AOL Instant Messenger's awesome filesharing feature but without all the IM baggage attached (heh), and that should give you an idea of how Live Sync works.
Samba filesharing is way overkill for this kind of use, IMO.
Dude, 256 MB of RAM costs like $3. Seriously. Like another post in this thread says, you'll pay more for shipping than the 256 MB costs.
My netbook shipped with a gig, and I've put in another 512 MB. (I think that maxes it out, but not sure.) Considering the netbook itself was $300, I'm not complaining about spending another $20 on memory.
Unfortunately the truck in front of me only moved forward 2 car lengths, and then suddenly stopped to make a turn. He did not have his turn signal on, but he stopped anyway. I was caught off guard.
Where do you live that somebody not using a turn signal "catches you off guard?" Where I am, in Washington State, you're lucky if half the cars on the road use their turn signals... it's not the kind of thing you can rely on for safe driving.
Also: I hope you got ticketed for it. The point of eating your fritter when it's safe is that it has to be WHEN IT'S SAFE! If you have your foot on the gas pedal, it's not safe. In fact by multi-tasking (putting the fritter down while attempting to drive forward) you were probably more dangerous to the truck than if you'd just held your fritter on the left hand and drove normally.
Then we can be like, "Paula imposed new restrictions on air travel today." "Can you believe Paula wasted all that money on a digital record system that didn't even work?" "Paula's totally off-the-rocker with that stupid color coded terror alert thing."
You could just not use it, you realize. Or is an Amazon rep in your office with a gun to your head?
I'm sorry but administering a db just isn't that difficult or time-consuming. It takes a certain level of technical knowledge to write good SQL. If you can do that, usually you have enough skill to handle the little bit of maintenance MySQL requires.
Then...
This isn't like running an Exchange or SQL Server with a ton of overhead, licensing fees, and required add-ons.
WTF, man? Administering MS SQL Server is tons easier than MySQL. You've got this exactly backwards.
The spreadsheet was around in 1981. You're way off-base.
Before the spreadsheet was invented... yah, possibly. But while PCs were "useless" then, everybody knew that their big brothers were extremely useful, so... yah.
Really? I'll best most people in Washington (state) do.
I live in Washington, and I don't mind at all.
Washington is quickly trying to follow California's path of taxing companies out of the state... I'd much rather Microsoft pay less in taxes and employ 75,000 people here (or however many it is after the recent layoffs) than have them move the whole she-bang to Utah, or God-knows where.
The State is lucky in that their other big employer, Boeing, is extremely expensive to relocate. That's not stopping Boeing from opening all their *new* plants in states with a better tax environment.
Our biggest problem in Washington right now is that all the damned Californians won't stay away-- they ruined their shitty state, so now they're all coming up here to ruin nice one. (That complaint sounds familiar to Southern Californians, I'm guessing.;) 15-20% population growth, most of it from California, just isn't sustainable... our infrastructure is already creaking!
I was thinking Scientology roles. "Your e-meter is reading low this week, Frank. You should go to the Nexus and have the Alter Ego walk you through the Step Doctrine."
I didn't say it is acceptable. I said it's the reason. Bush invaded Iraq because he had a mental problem, wanted to complete what dad had started, and needed to keep people's minds off his incompetence.
Wow, your head is REALLY full of bullshit. Congratulations. I don't know how you keep it from leaking out of your ears.

I consider what they've done to the Flash UI after buying it from Macromedia to be a crime against humanity.
At best, you can say that they've made Flash developers run to Eclipse to do AS3 development.

Yahoo doesn't claim to be news. Yahoo News does. That's a different section of the site.
It's not hard.

It's still not funny. I guess that leaves "or die," so please come with me to the gas chamber...

You really need to get a grip on reality.
Ok. What do you want, a prize?
Windows CE and Windows Mobile both support ARM.
There might not be "full-featured Windows" on ARM, but saying there's no Windows at all on ARM is just ignorance.
The danger of using multiple Slashdot logins graphically portrayed!

Read it as, "It's Office Live, but not Microsoft!"
Though, I'd like to see a good argument that Google Docs isn't a "real" word processor. Did I just imagine it?
How about we call it Paula.
Then we can be like, "Paula imposed new restrictions on air travel today." "Can you believe Paula wasted all that money on a digital record system that didn't even work?" "Paula's totally off-the-rocker with that stupid color coded terror alert thing."
Much easier that way.

I'm sure this has been in the planning long before the Oracle business was announced. Amazon can't predict the future any better than anyone else.
I have some bad news for you...
They're making a Mad Max 4.
I thought Slashdotters hated marketer-speak. Why is everybody debating this? Who cares?

It's fun to calculate what the sky will look like 3 months from now, and then see how accurate you are (with a bit of research)
Liar.

Yeah, but we have property taxes, and have you SEEN the real-estate prices near the Microsoft campus?!
