Google and Facebook both use these "intermediate steps" to weed out malware infested sites and warn the user. Sampling can also be useful in judging if something is NSFW, or more importantly, rickrolling prevention.
Why on earth is this on slashdot? Plenty of large sites have trouble catching every single rogue thing in their database. Perhaps it's a conspiracy and the Facebook creaters actually hate Islam??????
I was surprised to see that the write up recommended Automatix. I thought it was not going to be needed in Feisty, especially with the Restricted Codecs package easily available from Synaptic. I also was under the impression that Automatix often messed with Ubuntu updates, and it's better to just install via Synaptic or manually (which really isn't difficult, just copying and pasting commands into a terminal...)
There's no "gene" per se that explains why humans believe in God and the supernatural. Humans believe in God because they want to believe that their life means something, that we are living for a reason. It comforts humans "knowing" that there is something bigger than them out there, it comforts them "knowing" that when one dies, they just go up to heaven to live a better life. Humans believe in God simply because they want to believe.
They have had a facebook plugin for the latest version of AOL Instant Messenger for a while now and there's already been concerns about phishing issues. What's to stop a program from using the APIs to connect to facebook but then also keeping the facebook username and password that have been entered? Once you let 3rd parties connect to your system, security goes wayy down.
Oh right, poll worker says: Democrats use blue ink, Republicans use pencils.
Hmm.. here's a thought - why don't we give out slips of paper with the names of the candidates on them, then you CIRCLE your candidate.. and then (get this) PEOPLE count up the ballots. Woah.. and SOOO much more expensive right?
Because the same people that tell Democrats to use blue ink might be counting the ballots.
How many DRM articles do we have to have on Slashdot? I mean I get it, I hate DRM just as much as the next guy and think it's ridiculous, but it seems like we are getting a new article on Slashdot about DRM everyday. The same type of comments are modded insightful every time to the point where they're no longer insightful.
"Essentially, procrastinators have less confidence in themselves, less expectancy that they can actually complete a task... Perfectionism is not the culprit. In fact, perfectionists actually procrastinate less, but they worry about it more."
I procrastinate because I HAVE confidence that I can finish the task later, not because I'm afraid that I won' actually be able to complete a task. If I'm afraid about finishing a task, I will start it earlier. Fear of not being able to complete a task leads to NOT doing that task for a lot of people, not procrastinating.
These "scientific studies" over analyze simple things such as procrastination. Ever think that maybe it's because of laziness, or just that you really want to watch that football game?
Well at least slashdot has the "tagging schemes" down. In fact, this article will most likely usefully be tagged "fud, notfud, yes, and no". If that's not an honest and accurate of this article, then I don't know what is.
"Microsoft, meanwhile, is trying to convince businesses to adopt both Vista and Office 2007 at once."
Their method: charging hundreds of dollars for a simple document, spreadsheet, and slide editor when there are free programs available that do the exact same thing.
If you click the link and view the picture (its in a flash document), it's actually pretty amazing. The detail is incredible, you can zoom in incredibly far and still get a crystal clear image. Here is the technical data...

I don't think we're going to be seeings these kind of pics on the average website anytime soon;)
It is still looped through the sound card, so while quality may still be "excellent", there is still loss. I would rather use a program such as QTFairUse which doesn't lose any sound quality.
Egypt turned off the internet by shutting down the DNS servers. It is extremely useful to have public DNS servers memorized. Google: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4

The Senate voted earlier, NY Times story here. It passed 68-29.
Obama voted AGAINST it (McCain voted for it).

I have the legendary cytosine-guanine combo going for me.
If it never really took off...

It just... flows... Kudos to the naming department.

Let's face it... too much spam and off topic posts are the reasons Yahoo took down the boards, not to improve the board itself.

Wasn't Dvorak also the man that criticized Apple for using a mouse, saying that there is no reason people would want to use one?
