If I don't have anything better to do Saturday, I will be heading over to the Harvard Coop so I can look at their selection of interesting computer science books. Yes I will be writing down ISBNs and prices. I am trying to think of a proper response if I am asked to leave, but so far I haven't come up with anything better than "is this illegal?". I hope I don't get tasered.
Now that we will have way better open source video drivers for ATI (which we all know valve LOVES ATI), I think that the day has come for having real games on linux. This just makes sense.
If compilers keep abstracting away the interface between the programmer and the cpu, programmers will be less likely to write better code or learn new techniques that take advantage of all the power a few extra cores can provide right? That's just my take on it. Then again, I also think learning parallel programming techniques is fun, and a little more academic than most career programmers might like.
I didn't notice any other comments like this, but I apologize if somebody already made this point. If you run Windows XP or Vista, you are exposing yourself to worse copy protection techniques. Periodically checking up on you without your knowledge or consent. Worse still, in Vista, your OS can be deactivated if MS decides you are no longer a valid license. How do they decide this? Nobody knows.
I think you are fighting a battle that has already been lost. Online authentication/activation is here to stay and a one time online activation is really not intrusive. My company does it for their product and I am thankful they do. If everyone stole our product, I wouldn't have a job.
Oh my, if you hover over the people's names who have submitted responses, seems like each person's web site that the name links to is a business. I tried to submit a response, but it was rejected! He's a sneaky devil. That is how those sites are getting higher rankings, his blog links to their sites through the fake comments.
Is this really a reliable news source? I am really unfamiliar with DefenseNews.com and the site looks to be little more than a home-run website that any of us could put up. It looks like a reaction to all the conspiracy theorist "news" sites like http://www.911sharethetruth.com/.... what do you all think?
For their developer positions they email you a problem which has no solution because of insufficient data. So I wrote a program that would model the problem and ask for the missing data. That got me an interview but someone who wasn't a recent college grad was in the running as well and got the position (or so they say!) I do really enjoy the idea of having to solve a puzzle though.

Amen... people who split hairs like that piss me off. Thank you.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with "It's preposterous"
it appears that reading slashdot for years on end is beneficial for your memory...
