I don't understand people claiming that porn created the computing universe in 6 kilobytes.
Computers proliferated when they became cheap enough for the average person to afford (IBM PC) and useful enough for the average person to want (taxes, word processing, games, etc). Sure, some people probably bought Internet service primarily to access porn, but I don't think that had much effect on the overall computer boom. Computers boomed like cars boomed: someone made it cheap and people saw everyday uses for them.
Now, one might make an argument about porn boosting search engines (look at graphs of popular terms over time), but certainly not the whole shebang.
I'd like to hear of some of these promising wind and solar technologies that actually exist now. Nuclear is NOT more expensive than oil for any technological reason. Nuclear power's problems are all political. Waste isn't any more of a problem than oil spills, and I don't know of any nuclear waste accidents than rival the Exxon-Mobil spill. Please cite if you do.
I don't think a fast boot is paramount. I use Linux in a home office scenario, and the biggest annoyance in my experience is that X takes just a hair too long to respond. It really does make a large psychological difference compared to XP with the Windows Classic interface.
Well, what are some good simple turing tests? How about choosing between which image is good/bad? Like a casino vs. a church, hitting someone vs. hugging someone, etc. Moral judgments ought to take a while to crack. (Yes, there are a lot of people who'll go ballistic over the whole morality thing, but they ought to be able to set aside their philosophy/psychology long enough to prove they aren't a spammer.)
However, I'm not sure how you would implement this system. This sort of thing would have to be designed by humans for humans, instead of by computers for humans, so it would have a much smaller data set than a CAPCHA system and could be "dictionaried" over time.
We need some new ideas, not just a bunch of talk about spammers'/Google's ethics.
The President will have power to appoint new SCOTUS justices if the need arises, and an Obama court would be very likely to overturn or confine Heller.
FYI Obama supports a total handgun ban, 500% increase on firearms and ammunition taxes, reinstatment of the Clinton Gun Ban, voted against a bill to allow self-defense in your house in Chicago, and on and on. So let's not have anyone debate over whether or not Obama respects our gun rights. Voting speaks far louder than rhetoric.
They don't line up in any sort of a record. The geologic column doesn't exist anywhere on earth. Not even half or a quarter of it. Fish fossils on top of mountains, trees deposited like pickup sticks with all their branches and roots gone, etc really does kinda fit with the whole water theory.
I wrote a scathing letter to all of my congressmen, and all but one of them (Idaho) are opposing the plan, one quite vocally at that (Bill Sali). I don't know what other people are doing besides complaining about it on slashdot.
Those clever boxes that do all three, never seem to do any of them as well.
I'd agree that's true with your average coupon/bundled multifunction printers, but I have to say that the HP Officejet Pro 7600's are awesome. It's got everything I could want: built-in ethernet printer server with http interface, color LCD screen with usable resolution, an embedded OS smart enough to print stuff directly off an SD card, a normal scan bed and a copier-style scan slot (they may use the same optics, I'm not sure), auto-duplexing, etc. The only thing it's missing is wireless.
You get what you pay for. That goes for phones, too.
I used that to send them a link to this article under the name "Bird Snest", with the email address "birdsnest@slashdot.org". I hope it gets through and somebody reads it.:P
I love the idea of IPv6, but whenever we start discussing it I keep thinking "IPv6 is godsend for anyone trying to tie IP addresses to individuals." What is being (or can be) done about the terrible privacy implications of every device having its own address? Will the addresses still be dynamic?
Obama is bad for America because he's a hardcore socialist and an enemy of our Second Amendment rights. Let's all quit attacking the stereotypes and attack the issues.

Yeah, I was replying mainly for the benefit of people who were moderating. Apparently today's crop are morons.

Lots of 'em at the bottom.
Where's that leave normal people who are supposed to be able to pass and get an account?

Not even sell-our-nukes Clinton?
Also, the shadows in the event photos are nothing like the shadows in the Maps "screenshot".

Higher resolution is largely useless without better optics. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_resolution
Could a developer put in their agreement with EA that EA can't put DRM on it, or does EA make you agree that they can before they'll talk to you?

Suddenbreakoutofcommonsense?
I disagree. Patent reform is stifling innovation far more than than the music wars.

IIRC Obama is half white, 1/32 black and the rest is mostly Arab.
I'm fairly certain a water curtain isn't the same as a swamp cooler pad.
Yes, but humidity isn't server-friendly.
Call me ignorant, but why can't he?
