  1. History on Early Testers Say Vista RC1 Not Ready · · Score: 0

Windows has always been late and bashed all over before its release, but somehow people always staunchly defend that same version when a new version nears.

  2. Re:News? on Amazon Snooping Your Surfing For Targeted Ads? · · Score: 0

I agree that some issues have to be fought for, but technological reasons necessitate an online identity. Without your IP, cookies, SSL, etc., you could not make secure purchases, or be trusted to sell something or give information.

You cannot hide your normal activities in real life, and you cannot online, if you expect to be able to do things that require an identity or if you want the "online experience". It is a way of life, because we have chosen it.

Everyone loves Google's services, but they sacrifice their online privacy for it. People choose convenience over privacy. You can have privacy if you so choose, but most people have shown, by their actions, that they would rather have convenience.

Now, I do block some ads, but they do power a majority of online conveniences, and you can expect to pay for everything online if everyone blocks ads. So it is your choice, cheap/free and convenient, or private and expensive?

A stable alternative to MS-DOS? Isn't a little early to make that claim?

Why not use MS-DOS? Expense shouldn't be a reason. Or is it just to have an alternative that is out of MS's reach?

  15. Windows Direction on Vista Startup Sound to be Mandatory? · · Score: 1

I have read the derision, panic and hype about Windows becoming too bloated, but have always worried more about less control for Admins. A mandatory sound and built-in DRM are looking to be the beginning of the end to Windows as we know it. Now, Windows won't go away for a long time, but it could become more like a Mac where you can't modify it so extensively that it acts like a different OS. I will ditch windows when control is robbed from the users.

  19. Re:How about some more *durable* flash drives? on 16GB Flash USB Dongle · · Score: 1

I was thinking just the same thing yesterday. I bought a flash drive a few years ago, but I am loathed to upgrade from 256 MB because my old one is built like a tank. It is an old Cruzer Micro, and is steel (or aluminum; can't tell which) with a very thick (~5mm) coat of clear rubber that is VERY tough. It is a thin rectangle with no funky curves, and the lanyard hole is a hole at the rear of the body, still made of "3D metal" (not a flat stamp) and coated with rubber. And the light is bright enough to use for a flashlight, no wimpy glow here. Flash drives are going the way of PCs; they are cutting corners with quality. Recently there was the stir over that impact resistant drive you could drive a car over. So? That's how they used to be made.

  20. Re:Bush on US Government Restricting Research Libraries · · Score: 1

Clinton sold national nuclear secrets to fund his own campaign, and he made some of the worst appointments in history. My grandfather said presidents should have 12 year terms, because that is about how long it takes for consequences to roll around.

Bush has made some very bad decisions, mainly in health care, but I think a LOT of it is backwash from Clinton.
