    agreed. Competition though, is not necessarily the right term. The term "different perspective" is probably a better term for "reality of FOSS development". One main ideology will always lean to do things the same way. To use that other great community program "government"; one main party* over time tends to stagnation, two main parties lead to cover up... (is there anywhere that has 3 - 5 different parties?) 25+ just not practical *party refers to different ideologies, as vast as democracy and monarchy rather than Australia's Liberals or Labour (there are other parties, but none with enough clout to run the country -- they tend to be single issue parties unfortunately.) or USA's Republicans or Democrats

    Xstrata (nee Mount Isa Mines) for hooking up to the various PLC devices around their mines (as of +2 years ago). I'm sure other mining/industrial companies are in the same position. Their favourite PLC device suppliers were still delivering the PLC programming software on (MS) DOS in 2005. I think some of the more progressive companies were moving to Windows 3.11.

    Hmmm... I though all of them did the same thing; stare at each other say a 4 or 5 word sentence, stare again then a new 4 or 5 word sentence. Girl cries, bloke squints/clenches fist, says ~ 5 more words and thats the end of the show. No not romance, though i think I get that sometimes they have a relationship. You miss understood. Think intense, emotive stares. More family, in-laws, business partners, cousins, or spousal(ex)/divorce stuff. Maybe I should take your lead and follow up on what is happening... ;)

    I personally don't care if people widely adopt linux so much as I do that manufacturers do...

    Ditto on the games... I love their hardware too. Works better in linux for me than it did in XP :s. I'm planning on getting Vista just to validate the stories... those accosting my 'sphere of influence' seem to be running away or sitting in despair (except my brother who loves Microsoft). Online it doesn't seem to be as bad as what it was believe d it was going to be. :)

    From the comments I would propose that the traditional linux stronghold has been lost. Anyone making negative references to Microsoft products seems to be modded down and 'out yelled', whether the comments are on technical merits, anecdotal or opinionated, or derogatory.

    Of course derogatory for its own sake should be modded down. Technical conversations should be directly rebuffed unless they are obvious lies (it goes both ways Twitter...). Anecdotal; ymmv. Opinionated should be reasoned with technical basis in a civil manner. Unfortunately civility is a dying characteristic [that is an unsubstantiated opinion modders] in the world in general following chivalry.

    Yes, Windows Vista Premium/Ultimate sounds like a real professional name and not some stupid marketing research that was more applicable back when Terminator 2 was in cinemas...

    Come on, Windows is a stupid name for software. Just as stupid as Gimp (and I love Gimp). When we start seeing cars called Steering Wheel Wool Cover maybe Ill start to reconsider my opinion of software names.

    As a taxi driver (Rockhampton, Australia) that is precisely what I do. If I stuff up, then I take them to where they are going (within reason) for the price at the time of the mistake.

    Hardware, games and other miscellaneous time wasters even Twitter may concede they do well. It is software to real work that is often frustrating. Not to mention their habit of screwing people/business over. oops.

    Firefox, on tech merits and compatibility with purposed interface. On density, Firefox can not compete with Internet Explorer.

    Not missing malware. Having been using linux for several years, I'm aware that there were a number of exaggerations in pp. But yes, most of the hardware problems have been surmountable, or fixed. Even a lot of the configurations are the more familiar GUIs for those that need them. The problems come when manufacturers change chipsets at random. Think Broadcomm, which has a terrible reputation in linux. For me it has been that my Hp printer has never wanted to do colour under linux, (Don't know if it would work under Windows.) even though it has the 'proper' driver. I paid for two colour cartridges that didn't work. Except for that, I'm very happy with linux.

    I only want people to use it to the point where it is supported by manufacturers, for complete functional drivers. Commercial software/games would be just a nice touch.

    Why can no one ever delineate the 'usability' problems of Gnome or KDE? It is claimed as a given. My wife tried it on me. I asked her to show me what she couldn't do. She did not recognise some of the icons. I dragged the mouse over an icon and it told me what it was. I clicked on it and she started working straight away. The problem was she was not willing to experiment. Or a square button was suddenly round. Whoop te Dooo! Where again is the usability problems?

    Yes, I agree training and familiarity are a problem, but usability isn't it.
