"Compared to DVD-Video, Blu-ray Disc at least has higher picture resolution on HDTV and less noticeable artifacts even when scaled down to 960x480 for component EDTV."
Why does that mean that Blu-Ray beats HD-DVD?
"In February 2009, the FCC of the United States cuts off analog television broadcast, and Americans will make a run on the big box stores to buy spanking new televisions to watch the NCAA men's basketball tournament on. How many of those 3+ million PS3s will connected to HDTVs by the end of March 2009?"
The market making a run to the "big box stores" [as if where these high-def sets are purchased is a fucking cause for thought in this discussion] for new hi-def sets is probably not the same as current PS3 owners. Your market research can prove me wrong if you've got an actual sample to cite but otherwise - I would guess that the average American who would be affected by the analog blackout is not going to be the same American who buys a fucking PS3 in 2007. Your argument is shit.
Yes, they will count for nothing since the PS3 is going to come in a distant third in this generation of consoles. Hopefully, we'll see the PS4 at some point but that will be just as much of an abortion as the PS3 and it will bankrupt Sony.
Let's not forget that Sony installed rootkits on the computers of their own fucking customers. They also sued lik-sang.com out of business for employing the right of resale. By Sony's fucking "logic", I'm not allowed to have a fucking garage sale because they don't want me reselling their fucking products. Fine with me - I will never buy another Sony product. I hope they all fucking roast in hell.
"You're too stupid to understand me. I win." - very nice. Well played. Again, I will reiterate - as a consumer, I make choices in which companies I want to support using my own personal yardstick. I have decided that in the current climate, Sony is a much worse company than MS. It would be hypocrisy if I were saying, "MS is terrible and Sony is just as terrible so I won't buy Sony products." That is not what I am saying, but you're being a fucking child so you refuse to even listen to someone who has a differing view. I am saying, this is about the 4th time I've tried to tell you this that Sony and MS are bad companies but I think that Sony is currently more damaging to my rights as a consumer.
"What Sony did is not a form of DRM, but instead a form of copy protection (altering the discs physically to try and stymie disc duplication progrrams - read the threads). They had to reverse it, which pretty much means that attempt is gone."
Digital rights management is a vague enough term that I believe it covers copy protection. We can argue about that if you like. Regardless of the terms, the implementation of ARccOS was faulty. The fix wasn't to remove ARccOS scrambling, it was to update it. I'm going to ignore your personal attacks. Let's discuss this. My point was that ARccOS is still there - so the problem is not fixed. The discs are still defective in that there is an attempt made to prevent them from being copied. I have a right to make a backup copy - thus, Sony has not fixed the real problem.
"All three companies are fucked up. And if you pretend otherwise, you're being a fanboy."
First of all, my main reason for not buying a PS3 is that I don't believe it is going to last on the marketplace. I see it being a huge disaster. I will not invest in a console that I see as being a dead end. I will also not buy a console where I don't see additional value for my additional dollars. Finally, it's trite and childish to say that because all 3 of the console manufacturers have practiced anti-consumer behavior at some point, you can't judge one more harshly than another. In the current and most recent light, I have evaluated what these companies are doing and decided that I do not want to support Sony in any way whatsoever. I've never made the claim (although you seem to want to put words into my mouth) that MS or Nintendo are shining beacons of what good companies do; I will make the claim that Sony has rubbed me the wrong way and at a level that MS and Nintendo have not. Isn't that a rationale approach to determining what console to buy? That and the fact that no gaming experience that is only available on the PS3 has interested me.
"Write Sony a letter thanking them for resolving the issue early, then continue to buy what you normally would."
Because the problem is DRM and that has not been solved. Sony, as usual, just screwed up the implementation.
"That's fine but you should be more open with your motives instead of cloaking them in the guise of altruism."
Based on your constant apologies for Sony and the anti-MS slant to many of your comments, I would suggest that you should be more honest in your motives.
"Myself, I like all three consoles - you should have more of an open mind."
I own a 360 and a Wii. I have not seen the PS3 doing anything that has made me feel like I am missing anything. And it feels good not having any Sony products in my home.
"You cant have many friends with a bitter attitude, at least not friends you'd want to keep."
What is this? High school? Oh my goodness - you told me I don't have any friends. You really showed me.
"You're suggesting that money from one division will go to support another."
I'm suggesting that I don't know how the money flows within the Sony corporation nor do I care. What I do know is that Sony has in the past year taken two actions which I find to be totally unacceptable.
"Anyway, last fall I picked up a Sony 55" HDTV because it was the best product on the market in that size range for playing games. Boycotting "Sony" because "Sony Music" does something I don't like would have forced me to either spend more money or get a worse product without changing Sony. IMO that would be silly."
What the best HDTV out there is a pretty subjective opinion. I'd rather spend more money and not have a Sony product in my home. I stand on principals. Few others do.
"Perhaps next time you'll reconsider just what you are saying to the rest of the world about your mental age when choosing a screen name to represent yourself."
Oh, okay "SuperKendall". You're a pretty good troll.
"If a son goes to jail, it's the father that pays bail. That does not make the father more culpable. It is just sad for the parent."
Ah, still using the dumbest analogy ever I see! It's so sad that you can't discuss the actual situation. Sony Games gets money from a customer. That money goes to Sony, the parent. Does that money then go to Sony Music to fund more rootkits? As a customer, I don't know but it's possible. That's why I won't buy anything from any Sony division. Tell me where the failing in logic is. [Extra points: do it without making a stupid analogy.]
"Again, it may not be a law, but a company can sell or refuse to sell their product to anyone they choose. A reseller can't force a company to sell them their product."
But let's get back to the original point - lik-sang had legally purchased Sony products in one market and was selling into another. Sony can't control the entire distribution chain and yet they were allowed to by suing lik-sang.
It holds that if I buy a PS3 in Japan, take it to France and sell it there - Sony believes they have the right to sue me for that. Do you agree with that?
What the fuck? It's a message board. People are stating their opinions. Are you saying everyone else on Slashdot is making unbiased statements that don't reflect their own personal views and are only about the facts?
"If I'm the manufacturer of something, *I* have the right to say who can and cannot sell my product. If that hurts business, that's my problem, not anyone else's."
I'm going to assume we're talking about U.S. courts. Care to cite the law you believe gives a manufacturer the right to dictate what I do with their product after I purchase it?
But the relations between divisions within companies are quite different than the relations between siblings - which is what you were comparing them to. Parents don't often sell off their lesser children. Your analogy was flawed. I did the best I could with it.
"and your poor choice of userID indicates you are an idiot - or a troll, it matters not which one."
That's a really good argument. You made a personal attack against me. Nowhere did I do that to you. I attacked your crude and inappropriate analogy. It's obvious now that you can't debate the issue and need to resort to childish attacks.
"That's Sony Games. Not Sony Music. Was I ever defending Sony Games from other accusations? No, you assumed and as the old saying goes, made an ass of yourself (already accomplished by your user ID really). I am only saying that blaming Sony Games for the rootkit thing is stupid and ignores how large companies work and make choices."
I'm not blaming "Sony Games". I am blaming Sony. I'm not going to support a company like Sony. I have named two examples where Sony has behaved badly. The money is ultimately going to Sony proper - not Sony Games or Sony Music or any other division. My dollars simply will not go to Sony because of what Sony Music has done. Sony Games doesn't get a free pass - it's still one company. Of course, this is what I said in my other two posts in response to you - but you chose to attack me rather than respond with any type of argument.
"I'm so sorry the PS3 killed you mom and then ate your dog or whatever,"
I am really unimpressed with your ability to have an adult conversation.
"but why go that extra distance to try and discredit them that only goes to discredit anything else you say?
I pointed out two instances of Sony behaving badly, in my opinion and that I would not and will not support a company that did those things. That is my right. You never replied to any of my points. And just to go ahead and sink to your level, you're a fucking moron. Your argument is basically that Sony Games is a great sub-company and so I should just ignore everything else Sony does. If Sony Music was responsible for genocide, do you still think I should support Sony Games? You haven't told me why I should give money to Sony Games that makes its way to Sony proper - which could use that money to install more rootkits. But, of course, you're not interested in having an actual debate. You want to make your stupid fucking analogy and anyone that disagrees with you is either an idiot or a troll, right?
Looks like I've been trolled. [Hey! Look at that, it's so much easier to just label you a troll (or perhaps an idiot) that actually make any points.]
"Again I ask, if your brother rob a bank should you go to jail? Your father raised both of you, why shouldn't he go to jail? You talked to your brother at some point, surely you are to blame. All of these statements are as silly as what you are trying to say."
Apparently, you're not smart enough to discuss the situation without an inappropriate analogy. Okay - I will play along. I'm going to modify your statement to make it applicable to the situation with Sony.
Let's suppose I have a brother who shoots lots of people. He's a mad man, he's got lots and lots of guns and he just loves to walk around on the street putting the gun in someone's face and blowing their head apart. And when he runs out of bullets, he takes a big fucking knife out and just goes to town carving people up. Alright? So we've got my brother - who is doing some bad stuff. Then you've got me - I'm selling game consoles. You've also got my other brother who files predatory lawsuits against lik-sang.com and drives them out of business - stealing the right of resale and basically making garage sales illegal. So we've got two asshole brothers and me. Then you've got my father, he's running the show.
Now, do you want to buy my console knowing that when I get some money, that money may end up going up to my father and then down to one of my asshole brothers? Perhaps the brother that shoots people wants to buy some more bullets. Well, look at that, I just sold a console and made a little money. That should get my brother some more bullets.
Your analogy is fucking stupid but I used it to show that in your analogy, rewarding one brother results in civilians getting shot in the face.
"The company with the rootkits is Sony Music, not Sony Games. If your brother robbed a bank should you go to jail too? Truly large companies are really lots of smaller companies that make their own choices."
First of all - corporations are not people. Let's dump the analogies. I believe I am intelligent enough to discuss the actual situation rather than a contrived and inappropriate analogy. Hopefully, you are too. If I buy a PS3 and games, any profit they make off that sale ultimately ends up in the coffers of Sony proper. It is because Sony is a profitable company that all of those divisions exist. In fact, the games division has been helping Sony to stay in the black for many years. So why would I want to give money to a company that does something I completely disagree with?
Furthermore, where was your defense of their predatory lawsuits against lik-sang.com, I don't seem to see it in your post.
Hey - the PS3 at any price is still being marketed by a company that installed rootkits on the computers of their own customers and launched predatory lawsuits against lik-sang.com (a legitimate business that was merely employing the right of resale) - and that, my friend, is why the price wasn't the issue for me.
"IMO, the Sixaxis controller would probably be better for it. In my experience, the PS3's motion sensor (namely, in fl0w, among others) kicks all manner of ass."
Why is that? Oh look - I can recreate your entire argument. IMO, the Wii-mote controller would probably be better for it. "In my experience, the Wii-mote's motion sensor kicks all manner of ass." See how vapid a post you made? Do better or stay home.
And yes, the sixaxis controller is terrible and will be discontinued shortly by Sony when they bring back rumble. It is not going to be used for anything six months from now. Sony doesn't innovate well.
"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland."
No outrage there - just a politician answering a question asked by a reporter. He was spinning the question to point out how safe NYC is. There was no outrage.
"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers."
"There's a significant difference between 'deserves to die' and 'worth me giving a damn about when they do die'."
Yes, there is. Since you seem to be a rabid anti-Microsoft type, let's suppose that Torvalds at some point late in his life took a position with Microsoft. Would that immediately void all of his previous contributions in your mind?
You should give a damn because Jim Gray had many significant results in the realm of database research. To judge that he is unworthy of you noting (although - why you felt the need to comment in the first place instead of just ignoring the story, I do not know) based only on being employed by MS shows a thought process that I find very strange. [Note: I have not claimed that you are trolling. I am trying to honestly reply to your comment.]
"Yes but i'd think by now they'd realize there is going to be a demand. Rather every time they rush the launch of their new highly anticipated system knowing they have a very limited supply, and millions of fans go home disappointed. Doesn't seem like the best business practice. Or maybe it is,"
Let's see - either ramp up production for the release at levels that you will never again need (and incur that huge expense - and the worst possible time; the transition from generation to generation is not a good time.) or build production at a reasonable rate but then stuff the consoles in a warehouse and wait until you've got a really big pile of them and then release (the whole time paying to have them sit there). Furthermore, there's not even a guarantee of what numbers to meet so if your little idea of "not rushing" (i.e. sitting on manufactured units) comes to fruition, you don't even know how big a pile you need before you can release.
"I don't know."
The most true statement you made in that whole post.
Now go fucking kill yourself asshole.
People should care about Sony. You never know who they're going to sue next. I mean, look at what they did to lik-sang.com.
Was calling me "dummy" needed?
It holds that if I buy a PS3 in Japan, take it to France and sell it there - Sony believes they have the right to sue me for that. Do you agree with that?
