I'd hate to say it, but you might want to SERIOUSLY consider managed code. You could build some of the parts in C++ if need to be, but doing it purely in C++ seems like a bad idea to me. You're asking for a silver bullet that just doesn't exist...but managed code is getting faster and can be pretty stable.

Valid question or not, it still is flamebait. Whether it was intentional flamebait could be debated, but it was definetly flamebait. Anyone reading the post obviously saw that the guy was looking for ways to make OO work to replace it, so obviously 'just keep it' was the easy answer that had already been ruled out.

That's the only news show I watch. But the reason is simple: the other news shows are physically painful to watch. Personally, the way I feel about the current political and news environment is just about dead on with Jon Stewart, and I think the same is for many 'young people' like me. But let's get something else straight, the Daily Show is not around for news; delivering news is more of a by-product.

  19. Re:WMP9 or 10 on Normalizing Music? · · Score: 4, Informative

It sounds like volume equalization is what microsoft calls compression. Compression is where the amplitude of music is altered depending on the average amplitude of the last few moments of music. It's basically like the device/computer has its hand on the volume nob and tries to keep the volume comming out at the same level, which is exactly what the poster described. Any good sound editing program has compression effects and I would be supprised if many audio players didn't offer it as well. I know my creative nomad has the feature available. FYI, audio compression is also what radio stations use to make their station sound louder.

At work, we have a couple 3com switches and a bunch of HP's. The 3com switches are absolutely horrible, but the HP switches are absolutely awesome. For much less than a Cisco switch, the HP switches have pretty much identical features, but are easier to configure. (They provide a Cisco compatible command line interface, web interface, and a menu driven interface.) I'd really recommend HP switches. From what I hear, 3com switches are better now, but I thought I'd throw my $0.02 in about them.

Have you ever tried to work with crystal space or looked at the source code? Last time I did (several years back) it was one of the biggest messes of code that I've ever seen. I gave up on it too soon to understand it very well, but from what I could see, it was not designed very well and was consistantly a few steps behind commercial engines. On the other hand, it seems that Irrlicht is well designed and should scale well over time. It also appears to have developers that are making progress much faster than crystal space. Basically what I'm getting at is that crystal space 3d was never a viable candidate for a real game.
