The military is using a bunch of blimps (airships) right now. They use them on a tether as a mobile surveillance tower. It's a lot cheaper and faster than putting up a tower when they have to be moved from place to place.
I read the article and went to the website but didn't find any info on the capacity of the blimp. I'm pretty sure that they would never replace truck/trailor as a shipping option. It has been my experience that the price per pound of payload is very expensive and limited and it takes enormous ground resources.
It sounds like that half a million they invested will vanish in thin air (pun intended)
If you where trolling I don't mind but if not I would be interested in your comments.
You're right.....at the time I was indeed a "noob". And that was probably part of it.
I have found that it is very hard to break into the online gaming world (i.e. to be considered more than a noob). From Q1 to Q3 and all the respective mods that I've played I've always performed well compared to others online. Even now, playing Urban Terror I always finish among the top players when the match is over. I've never used any cheat while playing and always try to practice good gamesmanship. Despite all this I've never been invited to be part of a "clan".
So what kind of person makes a "good" candidate to be in a clan? It is obviously not based solely on performance. I used to consider it like major league sports....get the best players on your team for a run at the championship.
Man your sig says it all. What is this karma thing really worth? I read articles, I read comments, I have something to add or critic, and never do it as an AC. Naturally my karma is bad....ok, I'm still sleeping pretty well at night. Someone actually discounted my comment one time because I had bad karma because he couldn't find anything in my post incorrect.
I've played several mods from the Quake series of games but can't seem to walk away from Urban Terror (now at beta 3.1). I haven't seen any mention of this one on the comments posted thus far. IMHO, I think this mod nails the perfect combination of realism and gameplay. I think CS is cool and very realistic but I think it's a little too real for gameplay. I play UrT almost every day but only for 30 minutes to an hour (except for the weekends when I log several hours every Saturday and Sunday). I've played CS and sometimes went half an hour with little or no action.
Most of the time I need to get on and get my fix in a hurry. I know this sounds sad, and yes I'm addicted.....admitting is the first step towards recovery. - MK-Ultra (to Urban Terror regulars)
You are still not considering the amount of people that travel roads vs. the amount by rail. And the fact that rail service is available only in a few areas.
You think roads is a "free" infrastructure. Where do you think they get the money from? When you purchase your car tags and everytime you fill up your car with gas you're paying for those roads and the services to maintain them.
Do you think the average American would be happy with the government funding the rail system at higher levels when the majority of Americans don't take the train? If millions of people want to cram into the New York area (or other similar area) where the most viable mode of transportation is by rail.....that's fine with me. Just don't expect others to foot the bill. I don't want to pay for your train ride no more than I want to pay to raise some crack whore's illegitimate child.
It was not my intention to show inflated figures but that the government does subsidise Amtrak. Your original post made it sound like the gov't didn't give anything. I have no idea how much money has been spent on roads over the same time period but a more interesting question would be how many people have traveled over the roads vs. how many have traveled over rail in that time period.
In fiscal year 1971, Congress appropriated $160 million (in 1997 dollars) to fund Amtrak's first year of operation. Since then, Amtrak has received over $13 billion from the U.S. government, including approximately $9.6 billion for operating subsidies and $2.3 billion for its Northeast Corridor Improvement Plan. In 1983, the federal government went on to relieve Amtrak of responsibility for another $1.1 billion in federal loan guarantees.
The meter, originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to either pole, is now defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red light corresponding to a certain transition in as atom of krypton-86. That's pretty "artificial" to me. I've got a lot of measuring devices in my basement (being a D.I.Y weekend warrior) but I don't think I have a way to measure from the equator to a pole.
IMO, the derivation of the base unit for measurement is not what makes a system good or bad. It's how they are scaled to bigger or smaller units or how they are subdivided.
As a hands-on, Mechanical Engineer I find that it is convenient to switch back and forth between systems to better understand the problem. Sure, SI units are easy enough to perform calculations with but being raised in the U.S.A. I find that I can relate better when saying something weighs 10 pounds rather than 44.48 Newtons. Other times when I'm caught without a ruler or scale I take a dollar bill or piece of paper and fold it in half a few times....poof....a new system of measurement (Binary even). Arbitrary...yes...but no more than any other system of measurement and it works perfectly for recording/transferring measurements. I can apply them later to whatever system I choose.
"You try calling up Sony for support on the Linux kit. I have and I know what happens. You obviously don't."
Not knowing where to plug in the keyboard doesn't count
"I still maintain you believed that the Linux kit was implemented in a similar method as Linux on the XBox."
That's the beauty of opinions....you're entitled to one even if it's wrong.
Anyone with basic understanding of Linux I could reasonably call a hacker. Tweaking a kernel or writing a driver is the norm for someone working with Linux. Running Linux on a game console is a hack whether someone pulls it off in their basement with an X-Box or Sony recognizes the opportunity to make some more money and decides to put together a kit to sell. Game console companies started using more industry standard computer parts to reduce development cost and to tapp into the technology being developed in the graphics card business. The computer-like hardware was already there.
Your use of irrelavent comparisons/examples to prove your point is what's sad. That and spending so much time posting to/.
Backpedaling.....okay, my original comment that you don't see people using a game console like a computer is still dead on. You just saw the comment as something that would give you an opportunity to stroke your ego.
I have negative karma because I post what I want to say and never do it as an AC. If that gets me negative karma then so be it.....if that makes me a troll then so be it. I have a life unlike you. Enjoy the rest of your life posting to/.
http://playstation2-linux.com/faq.php.....you call that support. Let me translate it for you: Here is some more proprietary hardware we put together that allows you to run a proprietary linux on our proprietary hardware. You can't do much with it due to the hardware limitations and there's not much of an upgrade path. We just wanted to be first to market with this idea. Have lots of fun.
"Who is it aimed at ?
Linux (for PlayStation 2) is aimed mainly at the hobbyist home computer enthusiast. To install, configure and use the kit, you must be computer literate. We strongly recommend that you have a basic understanding of the Linux operating system before purchasing the product. There are many books on how to use the Linux operating system, some of which have been recommended by users on our discussion forums." ---- HACKER
Call them up the next time you have trouble compiling and see how much support you get. Thinking I'm confused was just one of your many mistakes on this thread. I don't feel so bad about my grammar now.
Don't try to tell me what I meant. You're the only one backstepping. And I'm pretty sure you're not done:-)
Yes a HACK.....brandorf pointed out some of its deficiencies. Yea and I have a friend who worked on the Saturn V Rocket and he hacks around with linux too. You make no point. Does Sony support a linux kit for there PS2? I don't think they do.
Where in my original post did I write that those afforementioned task "couldn't be done"? Come on....look again......it's not in there! I simply stated that I didn't see anyone doing it. I know it CAN be done it's just that nobody is doing it in great numbers. So, until you can read a post and make a comment without making shit up you are a KID.
So in fact, you didn't prove me wrong.....you proved that you can't comprehend what you read.
"PS2 linux kit" you say "PS2 linux kit"......come on. You're talking about a hack that combines mediocre hardware with mediocre software. Yea people are jumping all over that. The fact that I don't know anyone who does it says enough. It's a HACK.
I do play Mortal Kombat on the keyboard along with hundreds of other games. And I'd smack you down just like all the other kids who swear by gamepads.
BTW, I'm a troll because I point out the obvious about such a non-story.....okay, whatever.
I've yet to see anyone do word processing, image/video editing, send/receive email, perform CAD/CAM, surf the net, construct presentations, etc., etc., etc. on a PS2.
And on gaming....I've never seen a game on a PS2 that holds a candle to some of the FPS games on a PC on visuals and gameplay. Gamepads suck compared to the functionality of the keyboard and mouse.
You're probably one of those people who bitch about how you can't find a job and rant on about how bad the economy is doing and that its all the "current administration's" fault. When it's really your fault for not doing what you can to better yourself to be a cut above of the average doesn't-pay-attention-in-class-give-me-something-f or-nothing student.
I mean really.......when's the last time anyone heared music on MTV? Believe me, I like the eye candy just as much as the next guy, but don't try to pass that station off as "Music Television". Let's call a spade a spade.....how 'bout Make-me-horny Televsion or Masterbate Television or Make-out Television or Man-this-crap-is-getting-old Television......just don't refer to this junk as music.
We've all seen the specials on the Discovery Channel about cave men; dragging wives around by the hair and clubbing a mammoth to death for food. Should man kind have been content living that way? He was certainly producing a minimal amount of pollution. By most environmentalist theories we could have lived to infinity.
But he didn't stop there. He started utilizing his environment to better his way of life; cutting down trees to build structures and mining metals from the earth to makes things. Was that too far? Should he have stayed in caves and settled for what he could fashion from flint.
Was a horse drawn buggy not good enough for man kind? Couldn't we still do business at the speed of how long it took you to get from settlement to settlement? Horses don't eat that much do they?
What about trains? Should we have stopped there? Sped things up a lot but from what I've seen in western movies they produced some awful black smoke. Was that okay? Should we have stopped right there......farms, saloons, whore houses......what more could we have needed? If we have stayed like that how many more years till the world ends would we have had?
What about the first automobiles before mass production? Should we have stopped there? Personal transportation.....it seemed harmless enough. How many more years would we get back from dooms day if Henry Ford had not started producing cars on an assembly line?
What about flying? Should we have left that to the birds? Those big planes......I've seen some pretty mean exhaust coming from them. How much longer could my great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren live if they weren't spewing Jet-A fumes into the air?
Why is the SUV to blame for destroying the earth? The average fuel economy was in the teens in the '70's way before the arrival of the SUV. Was that okay? The bottom line is, unless you're part of the Imbuti tribe in Africa, pretty much everything that you do contributes in some way to pollution. How much pollution was produced as a result of manufacturing the computer you're on? Was that an acceptable level? What about geeks with several computers.....is it still acceptable? If everyone were riding bikes instead of driving how many more years would we have to live? Is that enough? What about that Frisbee you toss around on your lunch break.....I bet it's made of plastic. Is that okay? Plastic is a petroleum by-product......but Frisbees are so much fun aren't they? How do you stay warm in the winter? Don't heaters seem like a waste of natural resources? Shouldn't we just put on another sweater? But you have to stay warm.....staying warm is okay right? How many more years would we get back if we only used natural resources for heat? What about all the goods that you've ever purchased in a store. Wouldn't it have been better to have gone and gotten them in your hybrid/electric car instead of them being delivered from factories by those polluting 18-wheeling monsters? You could pick up more in your SUV and save several trips. Would they be okay then? If we used them instead of semi tractor trailer rigs.
Recall that there is a pound mass and a pound force (or weight as you have stated). While pound mass cannot be used in engineering computations (because it is of a gravitational system of units and not as absolute system of units), it serves as the unit of mass in comercial transactions in the United States (such as the 19 pounds for the set of Far Side Books).
1 lb mass = 0.4536kg (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
Oh, and the parent post was correct.....lose the my-shit-don't-stink attitude.

How long will it be (after the mechanized revolution) when robots come to the realization that they are destined to do more than flip burgers at McDonald's? I can hear them now, "This job is whack.....I'm a Model 686 with an Auto-figitation-modulator, I could do so much more." Next thing you know they are going back for more programming (read school). They lobby congress for robo-affirmative action and start getting better jobs. Before you know it they are starting their own companies and really making it for themselves.
In a post Robo-Civil Rights society the lower class humans will be left to back-fill the burger flipping jobs again. I've realized that in a way this has already happened to me. My Roomba(TM) gets to stay in the air-conditioned comfort of my house when I have to go to work everyday so that I may pay the electric bill.
