Like it or not, the future of education is Virtual Reality. The better it gets, the more real the brain feels it is, and putting every kid in a headset will always be cheaper and more effective than constant field trips. Plus, the number of immersive environments and subjects that can be taught this way are endless.
My field is psychology, and the research being done backs up the statement that students learn as well, or better, in a virtual reality system compared to a typical classroom.
Yes, in fact, on all social media (almost) the only thing I talk about is the Putin-Trump bromance. But I also like puppies, Mediterranean cuisine, late-night talks, long walks on the beach, and visiting Saint Petersburg to make new friends.
Here's an old story you might find apolitically interesting. We knew way before the election that Kaspersky was KGB trained and a Putin loyalist. You can read my comment history of you're an actual skeptic rather than a Russian botnik. But I also recommend anyone who doubts Putin's viciousness to hear the story of how he murdered his way into office from this PBS Documentary.
As a sidenote, I'm a slashdot reader from more than a decade ago, and I've been really disappointed to see the amount of denialism present on this issue. I remember this as a place for pragmatic, intelligent, realistic people. And here's the reality: Putin is at war with you, he doesn't give a shit about you or your family or even his own citizens' families, and he actively hopes that you are confused about what he is doing, or denying it entirely.
Hallo fellow internet commentators! I am here to assuring you that of course the Kremlin is having nothing to do with such nonsense. Why would a vengeful former world power that does this kind of thing all the time and is run by a KGB agent, do this kind of thing at *this* time, and I assure you I am no agent! I and my and my fallow detractors simply grow tired of such conspiracy theories, I ask them because they are sitting right next to me at the Internet Research Agency, a perfectly normal office building in St. Petersburg where 'journalists' such as myself and Mischa pass along the 'news' to your 'Democracy'.
I don't necessarily agree with Obama's response (though, to be clear, it wasn't a non-response--he expelled 39 Russian diplomats and closed their compound, which he accused them of using as a base of operations for espionage), but the Obama administration has said publicly that their reasoning was, if they made statements about an ongoing attack which they were still trying to figure out, it would have been seen as an attempt to sway the outcome of the election. And they aren't wrong, it would have.
Since you seem like a reasonable person who's curious about the issue, I'd suggest reading my other post in this thread.
The Times article literally describes a real world hoax fabricated by Russia that you can look up and verify yourself on Wikipedia, in local news stories, wherever you'd like. It also has a sit down interview with a troll who worked in one of these buildings, outside of the building itself--followed by an interview with one of the 'editors' of the Kremlin's fake news outlets that employ these trolls. So let me say this, whether you're a troll yourself or a skeptic who's been duped, it doesn't matter--the truth is the truth.
And this is only half of the story. Read this, this, and this...and you might begin to understand the breadth and the scope of what Russia is doing online. The Kremlin has built an entire industry manned by thousands, whose sole purpose is to get online and sew chaos, confusion, and doubt. They are why, when you discuss any issue that reflects poorly on Russia on any major website, you get marginalized and bombarded with talking points.
There are conservatives who mirror the Kremlin's message, but these buildings filled with thousands of paid trolls are the originals and the instigators. This is not a game, read the Times story above and you will see the real world consequences; Russia can create fake hysteria in America, made up disasters, and form political causes out of the ether which sway American policy in the direction they like. Russia, right this very second, and since 2014, and into the future--is at war with you, with me, with every Conservative and every Democrat and every Independent--and they don't care at all what you want. They care what 1 man wants, and what he wants is to say fuck you and your country.
Roger Stone, Trump's best friend, literally tweeted advanced notice of the Guccifer 2.0 (Russian Intelligence) hack. I'm shocked at the absence of knowledge on this site nowadays. Yes Russia just wants influence, Russia just wants chaos. But They also co-opted the Trump campaign.
This isn't really true at all. Two of the highest rated news programs in America are 60 Minutes and NPR's All Things Considered (google it). They even outperform FOX News. The most critically acclaimed entertainment shows are also often the most watched shows.
The reason crap is crap, is that crap is cheap to make and good things are more expensive to make. The formula for TV is not a singular pursuit of the highest possible ratings (though that is always nice I'm sure), it's a mix of the best ratings possible for the cheapest price possible, maximizing ad revenue.
Are they at least back to back clips? I can't load it obviously, but if they're cutting anything at all, I'll just go to a torrent site. I'm not interested in a highlights reel.
My math is terrible and my method was roughly estimated, but not counting commercial time or the last 2 years (which I remember well enough) I'd say I still have about 400 hours of daily show to watch. Maybe someone not as lazy as me can give a better number.
I hope it's not too late in the thread to have this article seen, and I apologize for piggy-backing on the parents comment (hopefully it's close enough to being an on-topic response anyway), but I wanted to point out to people that one person really can change minds inside the government with a well written arguement (you'll have to read a bit to see him mentioned). I wouldn't pretend to know what might get you your 'foot in the door' in regards to changing the mind of a person subjected to lobbying and writing campaigns on a regular basis, but my suggestions are simple.
Start by not sounding partisan, you weren't always an 'activist', explain why a rational and average American like you would come to your conclusion.
On that same page, leave whatever philosophy you might have on the approach of a plutocratic revolution where corporate rule enslaves mankind for another letter -- even if you do think it's the root of the problem.
And again relating to the above, don't speak in a letter as if the recipient is the greedy benefactor of corporate dinners and exotic vacations. Even if they were, making them your villan will put them on the defensive, and no matter what perversions of rational thought are required they will find a way to justify ignoring your statements.
Don't subscribe to write-in campaigns. Form letters are already ignored, and to combat such an easily abused practice you can bet many letters will be ignored just for resembling eachother or arriving from activism websites themselves.
Well then, welcome to the demographic of 'general viewing public'. You're an entertainment advertiser's wet dream. Let's see....
You don't seem to think art needs to be good, you don't think it's important whether or not it's a positive or negative contribution to American culture, and you apparently think we should stop thinking so hard with our brains and just watch what whatever a commercial can convince us (or our friends) looks cool.
If you don't think that art should aspire to greatness, or that people should view it from a critical or inquisitive state of mind, and collectively push our culture towards more inspiring and meaningful works, then maybe you should just watch Survivor? Or maybe you'd like to play with this keychain? They shine in the light....*jingles keys*
Or maybe you don't "give a flying fuck" because our entertainment culture is so dismal that calling it art is almost instinctively difficult to accept. I would agree if movies and television didn't hold so much potential, but they do, and so standards are important. It's difficult to take them seriously without imagining that it's somehow comparable to a tall slender man is standing in an art gallery, dressed in black with a goatee and non-prescription eyewear, pondering the significance of a pile of shit on a pedestal in front of him. Now maybe you missed Kangaroo Jack or the thousands of equally shitty productions out there that we call works of creativity, but either the implications of our particular pile of shit are of concern to you, or they are not. But you can't really argue that they shouldn't be.
As long as computer nerds like us yearn to have sex with famous models, celebrities, and porn stars, there will never be month or a year where progress is not made in virtual reality technology.
I always felt like the bigger message in 1984 was Newspeak and the control of public opinion, while the spying equipment was just there to set the mood.
It's kind of ironic, because people seem to always point to the newest government monitoring program and pull out that word "Orwellian," but no one mentions Crimestop when they watch a crowd laugh at a Bush rally where a man can make a joke about flip-flopping and simultaneously allege that the justification for his decisions are both upstanding while at the same time faulty because of bad intelligence. Or he can say that his justifications were never solely disarmament, but also freedom for Arabs. And he can say this to a crowd with a generally disfavorable view towards Arabs. He can have them nod in support of renewing the PATRIOT Act so that the FBI can spy on mosques and detain Arabs indefinitely on immigration violations, and he can immediately have them cheer for sacrifice of 1,500 American lives in the name of freeing Arabs.
I consider that to actually be the most eerie and Orwellian situation I've ever experienced. Or even read about.
If you can't play offline then you should just disconnect your modem and then run steam. I always do it this way (so I can feel safe shutting down zonealarm and other stuff to speed the game up a little). It will say it can't connect and give you the option to start in offline mode.

Hey wow, look at these well-upvoted anonymous cowards who don't know that Slashdot comment history doesn't go back that far, but Google does. Here I am all young and shiny, in a thread from 2004.

Mazeltov old friend.
So please, at long last, stop with this silliness. We are doing nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing.
So please do nothing in response, it will all be over soon.

I notice that you didn't check the date on the NYTimes story.

Install adblock extension, disable 3rd party cookie files, use software that ads advertising domains to your hosts file.
As far as I can tell the internet doesn't even have banner ads anymore.
You forgot Astranews, which probably belongs in the middle there somewhere. (I like it anyway).

Funny tidbit: the original episode leaked onto the internet prior to the FOX premiere had Peter say "if all those shows tank, we might have a shot."
Never could figure out what made that worth changing....maybe 'tank' isn't as ubiquitous.
Actually, families are not permitted to photograph the return of their son or daughter's coffin.
If I left the impression that I was defending the movie, I certainly didn't mean to.
