This is an example of the music I produce. It is produced using KXStudio and ardour with linuxsampler/hydrogen (running as an LV2 plugin via composite sampler)/linuxdsp/calf plugins. It shows that it is definitely possible to use opensource software to create songs. Of course i have also mixed in LinuxDSP (which is commercial) along with the calf plugins - they plays a big part in my sound.
Most of the money I have spent is on the equipment I use to record (my guitars/ tube condenser mic/X-Station/headphones etc). But I have also spent a lot of time and energy accumulating free samples from different sources and kitting them together(the drum kit is an example - it is a hydrogen based Drumkit using the Colombo Acoustic Drumkit with other samples (e.g. the snare) from different sources - all free). I also use the excellent composite sampler to directly plugin the hydrogen drumkits as a lv2 plugin into Ardour's midi tracks, so I don't use anything over ardour really. I use a cheap BCF2000 in Mackie emulation mode with Ardour.
I have also bought the linuxdsp plugins - I can honestly say that they are on par and sometimes better than commercial offerings (listen to the Linuxdsp Pultech EQ in action and compare that to the real thing - very close!) - the best part is that they are not restricted to linux - so you can use them where-ever. Also use the excellent calf plugins especially the saturator.
It works for the kind of music I do - (a mix of classical/classical rock/blues/jazz) and the fact that I compose/record/produce/sing my music myself, but I have felt the pain in the past and it has often taken me a lot of time to produce the things the way i wanted it to sound (You can see some of my older pieces as well on soundcloud - you can see that the sound does gets progressively better - it was part of a learning process of learning to use the tools and learning music production! I am currently working on a new track which uses the sonatina orchestra which is a free orchestral sample released under creative commons and i think that definitely sounds a lot better than my previous ones. Also Ardour allows for midi editing on screen - i.e.. i can see all my tracks side by side with midi at the same track resolution- its very useful when i need to line up notes across tracks. Other DAWs tend to have a separate window come up when you need to have midi editing (or they used to..not sure if that's the case anymore!)
If you go with a mac - chances are you will be doing what other people have already done and use the tools that they do - it does wind up costing more though- but if you are going to be producing music for other folks, time will be critical. Also there are probably more tools/options out there for the mac - e.g. I still can't find an auto tune equivalent for linux - however it is possible to run windows VSTs under emulation in wine as well - you can find videos in youtube.
The key thing with the mac is that if you run into problems..chances are someone would be able to help you solve them - I know a friend who absolutely swears by his macbook for music production and he says that the support is amazing. Linux based DAWs have also grown in that sense - the Ardour community is large but I just get the feeling that the mac might be a bit more mature - although this could be a case of the grass being greener on the other side. It will now be a bit of a learning curve, I am way too used to the way Ardour/jack and how my tools work now that I have invested the time and energy in getting to know them.
Also these tools have matured (i have been using them for over 5 years now). So a lot of the problems I faced in 2008 have been minimized. Suggest that if you do have the time, try giving them a spin with a simple project or something- spend a few weeks playing with it - if you like it use it. If you don't then you can always switch to commercial. The only thing you would have lost is time. That's what I did originally and didn't really look back after that.
In the olden days patrons or kings would hire composers to create a bit of music. The patron wasn't knowledgeable but had an idea.
The composer would create the score and the arrangement and present it to an orchestra. the orchestra would execute the composers vision and thus there would be music played back to the patron. The patron then provides his feedback (applause or derision:) )
The entrepreneur is a patron. The programmer (violin player for e.g.) the project manager (the conductor) are all part of the orchestra.
The missing bit is the composer who is the software architect.
Of course it doesn't hurt for the patron to also understand music as it lets him present his ideas in a way that's more understandable to the composer and the orchestra i.e. removing a layer of intrepretation and also let's him appreciate the complexity of what they are doing but the reality is that he is paying for it and shouldn't need to. The architect should intrepet his idea and present it back to the team in a manner that they understand.
That's the theory atleast:).

Used this around 5 years back when I was in Uni. I recommended it for the university mail server whch was running linux. Worked pretty well..the number of malware on email dropped to zero in a day..not sure about its effectiveness in the modern day but it is a cross platform with the windows equivalent being immunet (runs the same engine)
Huh? What sort of a proof is this
First of all if a=0.999....... then 10a doesn't result in a 9.999...where the decimal precision of the two are the same. Both tend to infinity, but at some microscopic level a will always have a decimal precision different than 10a. (think of it as willie coyote always chasing road runner!)
which means 10a- a ~= 9a (not exact but around 9a)
and therefore 0.999.... ~= 1 i.e. 0.999.. tends to 1..No shit Sherlock!
This is a "feature" that really wasn't neccessary..but requires effort to be coded in to be tested, because if that isn't done, things can horribly go wrong..all that to maintain a status quo and remove a feature.
But now something got borked..extra effort will have to go in to correct the problem..all for a "feature" which didn't really benefit anyone...other than a potential lock-in benefit that only marketing can conceive which had its share of bad PR as well.
From reading your post, it looks like you are looking to use a desktop OS (I may be wrong). Also it seems to me that you have tried various distros of linux but are rejecting them because it doesn't hhave ZFS.
Therefore if we are to restrict our options to OpenBSD and FreeBSD i would lean towards FreeBSD simply due to the large no. of apps available through ports.Also i believe driver compatibility is a little better in FreeBSD, especially recently with nvidia cards.
However as another poster said, the best judge is you. therefore install each and try them out and see which works best with your hardware. you may also want to compare desktop responsiveness with Linux, as I believe that recent linux kernels have received further optimizations for desktop performance.
If its a server OS you are looking for then it depends on what you are using it for (LAMP, file server, DB host etc.). If you are looking to run commercial DBs like Oracle on it, a certified OS like RHEL/Solaris may be a better bet if u plan to ask for support. Thats a totally different ball game all together and is something on which one can write pages on.
From reading the article, it looks as if the company has put in a lot of thought and effort into making a product that not only is technically advanced but also have developed a marketing strategy and are tailoring their product for a segment- The point about removable chargeable batteries was something that had kept crossing my mind everytime i had seen an article on electric cars and I am glad someone has gotten around to implementing it (I am unsure if anyone else has..if so please feel free to correct me!) . They appear to be getting their basics right and in addition are trying to put in some real innovation (inflatable parts).I hope they get their funding problems sorted. I for one would be rooting for them!
I think u will see some changes with the new ATI driver..there have been many optimizations..and yeah the card u speak of has had performance problems with the old driver..i have an ancient compaq 2500 with an integrated ATI card that shares the 512 MB ram with the system, i am using it with the open source radeon driver..its smooth and after turning on only the plugins that i want..(expose, scale, zoom, dream for close windows), its totally unobtrusive. Now i find i cant live without scale (need to switch windows? move mouse to upper right corner and then quickly select one of the tiled windows..switching desktops move to lower right corner..)
If they really introduce the player at $150 as they claim and if the blank media is also available cheaply, then we will see a very strong contender to replace the DVD players/drives. The article mentions that it holds 30 GB single side. Dual layer discs should be able to hold 60 GB then..
Also another poster mentioned that it is probable that existing DVD player technology can be adapted to play this new disc since it uses the red laser..i am guessing that this is probably what has been done which is why it is so cheap compared to other comparitive technology.
Heres hoping the movie companies don't screw up. In any case, it would be an excellent cheap backup medium for home users.
As a price conscious guy i would definitely buy one, if the above conditions are met..and like another poster said even if this is not available commericially nothing prevents me from getting legal HD content from the net and writing it into the disc. I hope that the movie companies realise that content not the media would be the defining factor.
One of her "Little House" Books has a description of a red indian competing against horses on a race track and winning the race (this is around the 19th century i guess). Saying that humans aren't built for running long distances is baloney..rather you can say that our generation is generally less physically capable.
If you want a sports example then take cricket..in the 1970s 80s, there were fast bowlers (bowling speeds of above 90 mph) who were really fast and they were springing all over the world..in the west indies there were such people sitting in the sidelines where they would have walked into any team today...yet today fast bowlers are by the far a lot fewer..
I think as lifestyle improves humans become softer and less physically capable and this gets passed on to the next generation as well and so on.. eventually we will just be brains carried around by insects:) (I forgot which SF book thats from)
well it depends on the margins he's getting doesn't it? if he is getting a higher margin for the cheaper card (probably because he is buying in bulk as there is demand for that cheaper card say it costs him 7$ and he sells at 10$, he gets a 3$ margin) if the card were more expensive he might have to reduce his margin since he can't buy it at bulk as there mayn't be demand for that card (he could acquire a 19$ card and have to sell it at 20$ because no one would buy it above that price thus margin at 1$, he can't buy it at 17$ because there isn't as much demand for that card as for the 10$ one). And therefore he would push the cheaper card as he earns more per card sold
Well your argument would be valid if the upper classes were all rich.
But the funny thing is that this system is being exploited since there are many 'backward classes' who have a lot of money:)). So they use this entire system to their advantage.
The losers are the ppl without money (Some 'forward classes' and genuinely backward classes- these two will consist of the majority of the indians especially the latter).
Caste != Based on wealth
Besides it works against the ppl it is intended to benefit. In a village for example, I heard of an instance where the ppl refused to be treated by a 'backward class' doctor, because they believed he wasn't good. (a 40% pass aggregate is enough for backward classes to be certified as a doctor I think or something like that). So u see even if the guy is actually good, this system will bring him down. Everyody loses in the process.
That is why there is a proposal to scrap the existing system and and bring in one based on economic criteria.
It may not be perfect but its better than hell:)).
"Many of the visually impaired have finely tuned auditory sensibilities, allowing them to react quickly to sound. From its beginning, MAS was designed to handle timing issues exceedingly well. It was optimized to provide tight synchronization of multiple media streams. More importantly, for users dependent on audio cues, it is designed to stop some functions and start others quickly. For example, a user, hearing the opening syllables of a menu option, can either select it or move to another option without waiting for a complete articulation of the option. MAS's original accessibility requirements, developed with leading accessibility authorities, included:
* Ability to stop utterances quickly
* Controllable low latency
* Format independent media handling
* High audio quality
* Multiplexing--with priorities
* Small memory footprint
* Synchronization of multiple media stream
"MAS enables low-latency Internet conferencing and telephony. Automatic bandwidth measurements and MAS's dynamically-switchable CODECs insure that the conference quality scales from 56K modems to T1 lines".
"MAS integrates with a compatible X11 server on your desktop. It processes graphic information locally, alleviating the need for network transmission of uncompressed graphical content. Graphic events are easily synchronized with audio events for professional-quality multimedia and accessibility-enabled applications."
"MAS handles network-distributed media processing and intricate format configuration tasks. It continually measures system performance and adjusts its actions depending on the available system resources. The longer it runs, the better it knows your system".

Obviously this has been designed for performance/scalability.Of course the real trial is actually running it for yourself but give it a chance before you write it off.
What kind of a study is this? Seems to be she is just indulging in sensationalism. The sample is just too small and all she seems to be doing is trying o reinforce the hollywood 'hacker' image the guy who effortlessly breaks into systems.
And to people cribbing over why hackers insist on correct terminology, well all I will say is it is really demeaning to be associated with script kiddies. And it really isn't much is it? Just two letters of the alphabet replacing one with a fairly significant difference in meaning.
And besides look at the press are doing.They are puting ppl like Linus, Alan Cox in the same category as some really desperate ego mongers.
What are u talking about?? Haven't u heard about the new national highway system that's being implemented? Irs already mostly functional in the south and it really is a big improvement.
And kalam well his achievements are more in indias space program rather than just defence. And if u think that he is merely concerned abput defence expenditure i suggest u read his book about his vision for india 2020. That man is a legend here and nearly unanimously respected by all.
Actually i once met him when i was 11 years old and i remember he was very patient and answered all my questions very seriously. I still remember the explanation he gave for the concept of the hypercraft a space shuttle like spacecraft but which would instead collect oxygen from the atmosphere as it climbed rather than carry it in liquid form. I mean imagine an important man like that actually taking the time to answer a 11 year old's questions, something which u would not normally see.
The govt. receives a lot of flak here u should justread our papers. I can't remember the last time they were actually praised for something (probably for Cancun i think). But their achievements are many, (though their goof ups are pretty bad),only thing they have poor PR (Prime example u hear about our defence expenditure but stuff like roads and infrastructure building hardly gets a mention in any foriegn newspaper let alone indian).
But very importantly they pulled india out of a very bad time. There was instability in the govt. the economy was in dumps general pessimism. Nobody talks about that now. They just take the current stability and economic growth for granted. And the amazing thing is they are actually the most secular govt. till date despite all the issues that have occurred. The only trouble is they wind up getting more bad press than good, because they simply have no concept of PR.
So u see i politely disagree with ur statement that they are hardly ppl to look up too. The fact is that these two are one of the few who really seem to care about the country rather than just filling up their pockets like many others are doing. In fact the BJP is in power only because of Vajpayee. I doubt if anybody would vote for them without him. He is doing a fantastic job in a very diffcult position where there is pressure from all those fanatics and so called secularists.
And frankly speaking With two hostile countries on either side (with one receiving US military aid and the other stealing it) we can't help it we have to spend on defence. WE have lost territory in the past and on betrayal of a trust. In turn I really don't see why the united states should think it is their prime right to spend on defence while other countries should concentrate on development. Lavez votre linge au famille first and don't be hypocritical.
We are a resilient ppl and we are doing pretty well thank u inspite of all the predictions of ur world Bank and IMF. And both the indian press and the american press complement each other well they have only bad things to report about the other country. If u believed half the things our press writes u would start believing that america has gone back to the dark ages or something. In contrast ppl staying there tell me yes there are problems but ppl there are learning to face it and not just look outside at something like terrorism for an excuse to hide from it. That's why i mentioned strong leaders. That's why I respect clinton ; come on he turned ur economy completely around from the mess it was in. If u didn't need leaders u wouldn't have a democracy u will have an anarchy instead.
So don't just believe all that u read in the presses. There has been a lot of trouble yes but after a long time there is hope that we would again become what we once were a very long time ago.
Like i said the ppl we are discussing have not just talked they have delivered concrete results and no not just in defence R&D. But there is a lot to be done, but i think this govt. is doing just fine, and deserves some credit and definitely not so much criticism.
If u pay peanuts u get only monkeys. Corporates don't realise that. They are so focussed on cutting costs that they don't realise the implications of their actions.
Here in India the average programmer is underpaid and overworked. The companies make profits by cutting the wages and using despicable tactics like hiring trainees and not confirming them for like 3 to 4 years and paying them salaries that amount to less than 100$ a month while forcing work that sometimes involves 48 to 72 hour shifts at a trot. Now some of these trainees are fresh college graduates who don't even know what a pointer is but dutifully repeat that java is C++ without pointers. Anyway even if a trainee is the best at some point the quality of work will drop because the programmer stops enjoying his work, and plus the reward for work here is more work, hardly any pay increases or promotions.
The managers here well they think only short term, that is the next pay check. There is very little focus on quality, even in some so called CMM Level 5 companies. The only focus is to make deliveries on schedule, and wait for the bug report, probab;y inspired by m$.
Actaully its not usually not so bad:) but such extreme cases do exist.
Then the american bosses are also absolute imbeciles. They make demands like i want it delivered yesterday. Very few ppl here have the guts to tell them 'if u want it delivered yesterday then u should have asked for it day before yesterday'. Everyone licks the white man's ass because that's where the cash comes from.
This is a cycle in progress . There is a severe imbalance. It will correct itself over time, as india progresses because more and more ppl will start demanding better wages and as the economy starts becoming more like what the united states used to be like, i guess we will see our companies outsource. Its already happening in BPO, where companies prefer to hire Europeans or japanese as they compete directly with indians in terms of wages an they are willing to stay in india and work our schedules.
America is going through a downswing. The trouble is u guys are stuck in a rut just like in the great depression. You need a strong Leader at this time to pull u through and inspire people and not go off to war against terrorists. At least we have Kalam as president and while he is a figure head we consider him to be a great man. And well Vajpayee he may be an old foggy at times, but he was a freedom fighter and a statesman,and he is still very clever. So u see we have belief in our leaders and more importantly we respect them.
In contrast however the american sentiment is not very flattering towards Bush.
What can u do to correct this? Frankly speaking I think the rot began a few years back itself, with all these corporate scandals. That's the trouble with pure capitalism it tends to go into extremes. You need some amount of regulation by the govt. but too much of that also ruins things. There has to be a balance a semi socialist semi capitalist thingummy and me thinks india has done pretty well. We have not grown like china but our growth is steady.
However there are downsides as well India still has a lot of poor ppl.There is enough grain rotting in storage that can be used to feed them. Corruption still is rampant though these days the supreme court seems to be flexing its muscles.but overall there seems to be optimism in the air, a promise of better things to come.

I think as lifestyle improves humans become softer and less physically capable and this gets passed on to the next generation as well and so on.. eventually we will just be brains carried around by insects
To save money by not going to the gym?
well it depends on the margins he's getting doesn't it? if he is getting a higher margin for the cheaper card (probably because he is buying in bulk as there is demand for that cheaper card say it costs him 7$ and he sells at 10$, he gets a 3$ margin) if the card were more expensive he might have to reduce his margin since he can't buy it at bulk as there mayn't be demand for that card (he could acquire a 19$ card and have to sell it at 20$ because no one would buy it above that price thus margin at 1$, he can't buy it at 17$ because there isn't as much demand for that card as for the 10$ one). And therefore he would push the cheaper card as he earns more per card sold

Paula Jones- GROKLAW and not 'he'
Well your argument would be valid if the upper classes were all rich.
:)). So they use this entire system to their advantage.
:)).
But the funny thing is that this system is being exploited since there are many 'backward classes' who have a lot of money
The losers are the ppl without money (Some 'forward classes' and genuinely backward classes- these two will consist of the majority of the indians especially the latter).
Caste != Based on wealth
It may not be perfect but its better than hell
The bookmark list should synchronise itself with the bookmarks menu in nautilus. that way things can be a little consistent.
:)
They probably could also use a common bookmark thingummy for folders, that both kde and gnome could share, in the spirit of freedesktop.
For that matter they should use a common bookmark format for konqueror, mozilla, fire bird and the gad zillions of browsers out there
I think the following should settle your fears.

From their site
* Controllable low latency
* Format independent media handling
* High audio quality
* Multiplexing--with priorities
* Small memory footprint
How does France deal with its nuclear waste disposal?
They are so focussed on cutting costs that they don't realise the implications of their actions.
.There is enough grain rotting in storage that can be used to feed them. Corruption still is rampant though these days the supreme court seems to be flexing its muscles .but overall there seems to be optimism in the air, a promise of better things to come.
However there are downsides as well India still has a lot of poor ppl
I wholly concur
