I'm a student at Drexel University trying to get a Computer Science Degree. When I started in the Fall of 2000, they were praising themselves as being the first (and possibly only, at that time[?]) University in the world to have a wireless network accessible from anywhere on the campus, which spans several city blocks. This includes the educational buildings, which are mostly centralized, and the dorms, which are spread out over a few blocks.
Sadly, though, they got smart about a year ago and started registering the MAC Adresses of the wireless that are permitted to access the network. As a student, I am more than welcome to use the network, all I have to do is register with the right people. But all of the residents in the area that were popping in on it, plus any guests you might bring to campus, they're all locked out now.
OK, I may be biased (I work for one of them) but they can be quite helpful. Most if not all have reduced rates for students. I know that SIAM has activity groups focusing on different areas of Mathematics. (Anyone care to guess who I work for?).
I am a 2nd year undergrad at a local university studying Computer Science, and I work tech support here. I can't form a real accurate opinion of what we do for our members, as I'm not all that interested in it, or do I work with members much. But I know we have conferences all over the country and have Job listing and such. Plus it's a good way to network with other geeks... Umm... I mean Mathematicians.
I suggest you check out some websites, see what you like, and perhaps pose the question towards some of them.
"UMG is currently making every effort possible to eliminate any audio interference or technical difficulties created by the implementation of copy protection technologies....If you experience this problem, you can help us by emailing the model of the player and a description of the problem to..."
Sounds like they are realeasing a product that they know is buggy, and are letting the consumers Beta-Test for them. Sound like anyone else we know?
I'm a CS Student at Drexel University in Philadelphia. The last term I had class (out in the real world now, working in Perl on co-op) was last spring, when our Prof told us he was implementing a simalar program.
At the time, they were still very inaccurate, and being used only to pick which ones needed to be carefully examined by the TA's. Not Really sure how they run now.
We all know that this is will spell the end of Napster. Few will use it to begin with, and, finding the bare library will cancel thier service, slimming the pickens even more.
Who in their right mind is going to pay for it to begin with, with somanyother File Sharing apps on the Free market?
I searched ebay for 'Jam!' and found several auctions for the device, selling for $30. And because I'm nice (and not bidding yet) I'm attaching a few links directly to the auctions below. Some of them list for one console or another, but if you read the descriptions, they are all the same, with RCA and S-Video inputs. Enjoy!
Thanks! This looks like it's exactly what I was looking for. If any moderators are reading this, please mod up the parent to this post. Looks like it even allows thruput for sound into your PC speakers. Now I can buy a console without feeling guilty, an extra $30 isn't too bad.
Now if I can only find a way to add that extra memory that M$ is leaving out of the XBox...
Excuse me, but do you know what a GPU is? EVERY video card has one. Some just don't output enough heat to need a heatsink... but then again, why am I wasting my time replying to an anonymous coward?
I'm not sure how it fell off, but it did. As the Troll Anon Coward above states, "Heatsinks don't just fall off [for no reason]." (Trust me, it makes sense when you add that last little bit in) Obviously there was a reason, but have you ever seen the sink on a TNT2? It cant weigh more than an ounce or two, so I have no clue how it fell off. Perhaps the adhesive was from a faulty batch, perhaps the card was manhandled is shipping, who knows? I don't really care, except that I'm trying to get a new heatsink from nVidia. As for THG trying to make some anti-AMD point, I doubt it, but I don't put it past anyone to try to sabotage those they don't like for whatever reason.
Your point is good about Car and Driver, but consider this... you just paid however much for a new BMW.... and the engine seizes the next day because you were cruising around enjoying it, and the water pump died. It happens, I used to work in auto repair, I've seen it happen. Now, go back to your dealer, he tells you that it's your problem, your warranty will not cover it, you the pump was damaged in shipping and you should have tested it before you drove anywhere. How would you feel? Would you rather go buy a Chevy that will offer a little less performance, but will cover things like that?
Now I know that this scenario is a bit extreme, of course you would be covered under warranty, but I'm just making a point using your example.
BTW, as a side note: Cars are a lot like computers. It doesn't matter if they are American, German, or whatever, everything is still made in Taiwan.
I've always thought that it's pretty cool (and have been duely impressed) that AMD Procs pump out more power at the same clock speed as a comparable Intel chip, but it seems to me that AMD could still learn a lot from Intel on Thermal Overload Protection.
Yes, I'm sure most/.er's have read this article already, so mod me as redundant if you wish, but please hear me out first. The simple fact is that I will not invest in the money for a chip that might send my money literally up in smoke. I recently experienced multiple system halts on my home machine due to Hardware error, only to open my case and find the heatsink fell off the GPU of my TNT2. Luckily, no apparent damage, but I could see the (however slight) possibility of the same happening to my processor. Does AMD want to insure their chip from overload at the price of my system? No? Then I think for the time being I'll stick with the chip proven to have good protection, no matter what kind of performance boost I could get.
Still my point -- the primary use of the disk is to play a film, no matter what special features or compainion software may be included. The disk was made to be media to transfer a movie, just the same as a VHS tape.
And in reply to the above anonymous post, you have a good point, I don't make the laws. But I'm not saying that I do, I'm just stating my opinion just like everyone else here on/.
Is there something that I'm not understanding here?
If the DVD contains a Movie stored in a digital format, created for the primary purpose of viewing said movie, it is a FILM. NOTE: Primary purpose means that it it also includes with the movie some software such as screensavers themed to the movie, but is marketed as a video, its primary purpose is to view the movie.
If the DVD was create to store data which will install applications onto a computer or simalar device, its SOFTWARE.
...but really, does this *actually* surprise anyone here? Personally, I have no intentions of blowing 300 bucks on another version of MSTrash. Besides, it will only be a matter of time before someone ports it and creates a LINUX based product...
Ok, you have a point, tho, not good for what the post is, so go ahead and mod me offtopic, I just thought I had something interesting to say, I guess not.
I've been researching something like this in the past few weeks because I'm working on a.... project that will require a fast boot and needs to take some abuse, so a RAM drive sounded good (no moving parts). What I found was an IDE adapter for a CompactFlash card. OK, so you can only get max what...512M? Thats good enough for my purposes, not so good as a primary drive on my home machine. The best part (for me anyway) is that the adapter is $17, and one can aquire a card for (I think I found) $60?
HERE is a link to the one I found. Scroll down to find the CompactFlash Adapters
"Can someone tell me why this did not get picked up by a more respectful network? "
I know that it's distressing that Enterprise is on UPN, but the fact remains that UPN stands for the United Paramount Network, as in Paramount Pictures, as in We-Hold-All-The-Rights-So-It's-On-Our-Network
Other than being the ONLY show I watch on UPN, as Voyager before it, I can't wait to see this.
Even after my repeated protests, my boss insisted I give a user the root pswd to the RHL machine in his office which he uses to check compatibility of journal papers we post online. His arguement? He has many years of experience with computers including work with the military. So I hand him a small slip of paper with the pswd on it. I tell him to memorize it and then "you know what to do with it" meaning of course to dispose of it properly. What to I watch this military man do? He looks at it briefly, then tapes it to the underside of the pencil tray in his desk!
Doh!
OK boys and girls, lets learn a new tern today.... can we say Class Action Lawsuit?
If all the companies are together being harassed by AOL/Netscape/Time Warner/ and how many other companies have merged into it by the time I post this, then why not stand your ground and fight together.

As for me, I have never used the GAIM interface, but only because I didn't know it existed. I will be downloading it tonight if I find it is not already on my machine. I am a great defender of the Free Source project, and I hate to see one or a group of them be pushed around by big business. I will be more than glad to donate to this cause. Please let me know what I can do to help!! email me with suggestions/comments/flames steddyj@hotmail.com
I just completed my Freshman year at a rather large University in Philadelphia as a Computer Science Major. Here, all CS and Math majors are required to take and Intro to CS Course in their first term. This class was centered on HTML and JavaScript. Using this class to break students into making a michine do their bidding (at least those of us without prior experience), the curriculum then takes you into two terms of programming in C++ using MSVC++.
I already had been programming in C/C++, HTML, and JavaScript for a couple years, but after (grudgingly) taking the course, I could see how this could be helpful to all the newbies. At the very least, it got out all the annoying questions when they were least painful, like this one:
"How do I make the computer write my english paper for me?"

a BattleBot made of these?
Wham! --The pulverizer knocks off an arm, several nodes crawl out from a compartment and shed the broken nodes, reattach to form a new arm.
From what I have read in the Tournament Rules and Procedures and the Technical Regulations, there is nothing restricting a bot from self-regeneration.
