Please tell me how your one example means that Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, and others do not manufacturer their phones in China.

    Samsung is South Korean
LG Electronics Inc. is South Korean
HTC Corporation is Taiwanese ...Huawei is the only Chinese manufacturer on the list, and although very popular in Europe is shunned in America.

Sorry my example was about avoiding tariffs by Chinese Apple manufacturing locally to avoid tariffs. To the benefit of the local economy, market share.

  3. It makes perfect sense that tariffs would raise prices on lower margin peripherals. There is less of a markup for the market to bear,

Except their peripherals look to have even higher margins...in a monster cable joke way.

  4. As an Apple commentator... on Apple Says New China Tariffs Would Boost Prices On Some Products (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

    1. Apple commentators sometimes argue that Apple pricing is designed to maximise margins rather than market share. Unsurprisingly, Apple doesn't state its pricing strategy in public. Why would it?

They don't produce a $100 for the mass market they produce a boutique brand phone for $1000 at the cost of 85% worldwide market share. They do not keep it secret

    2. In any event, the logical chain between "Apple prices for margin rather than share" and "therefore tax increases shouldn't lead to price increases" doesn't exist. Obviously, input costs affect final prices, even though final prices are affected by more than just input prices. This is Pricing 101.

Then you have never done any accounting. Please search brand equity Apple still sell Apple users to Google.

    3. Apple is the largest corporate taxpayer in America. Maybe you want it to pay more, but if that's the case, what the fuck was the point of giving American corporations including Apple a massive tax cut earlier this year, which is going to balloon your deficit to unheard of levels?

They didn't create a bond to avoid paying any for hospitals and schools, and only paid after getting massive tax cuts. Next you will be saying the Irish sandwich was a myth, please stop spreading fake news.

    4. The American economy may benefit from more Apple accessories that are sold in America being made in America, but it will also lose out when Apple margins and shares decline

Apple is anti-america, the fact that jobs might be created here, and tax that is harder to avoid paid is impossible to spin badly. Share price only affects shareholders.

  5. Are you faulting Apple for not trying to monopolize the entire market on smart phones and instead trying to earn as much profit as they can on the market share they have?

No. It does mean that its market share in massive markets like China ita share small and dropping, and in India is non existent.

You do understand how basic accounting works right? If the cost of a good increases, either profits fall or prices get increased.

Yes, as an accountant. I am saying profits will fall.

Well this is a bold faced lie. Apple does pay taxes. They just pay little taxes in some parts of the world. For example, I would consider the US a part of the world. Do you want to know what Apple paid in corporate taxes in the US?

lol, stop spreading fake news, and calling people liars, Apple deliberate do not pay for hospitals, and welfare...because they legally(sic) can...Ireland was famously forced to collect €13bn in tax from Apple. I hope they Apple pay you. Because their anti American policies are everywhere.

And that is irrelevant to Apple who is facing problems with US/China tariffs?

A company who has become the market leader when faced with the same problem with tariffs by manufacturing in that country is a working example it is possible to not only avoid tariffs, but benefit the local economy, and make it successful. You are saying Apple cannot do it...and I am fine with that.

Please show me where they "laughed at Obama". Under Jobs, Apple stated to Obama that they were not moving the majority of their manufacturing to the US. I don't see anywhere where Jobs "laughed".

Apple still sell their users to Google, so why is it so hard to find examples? I like this one

Why can’t that work come home? Mr. Obama asked.
Mr. Jobs’s reply was unambiguous. “Those jobs aren’t coming back,”

  6. Any price increases will only impact the USA, the rest of the world will continue with no changes.

In the UK they do a $ for £...whatever you think of that, so if their was any price hike well be in the UK. I think it is dangerous for them especially as more people are buying off contract phones.

  9. Yeah, my college professor told me they just keep it in a giant Scrooge-McDuckian vault... just sitting there doing nothing, 100% liquid capitall

They absolutely don't, ignoring the fact they created bond's against it so Americans couldn't benefit from Hospitals and Schools. They will have an army of Accountants on phones lending large sums of money out against it, often for hours.

  10. My understanding of Apple product pricing is clearly flawed. Apple have always priced their products on maximising product margins; Not focused on market share. How can this possibly raise the price of any of Apple's hardware? All I can see is successfully taxing Apple who have worked tirelessly to pay tax nowhere in the world. Taxies that should have been going towards America's and others infrastructure; schools, roads, medical etc etc

I am also not sure why the iPhone is missing from the list of products, as its really its main profit centre. The accessories talked about are less technical(seriously cases), and could be made in America Trivially. Exactly what you want tariffs to do.

I notice that xiaomi don't have the same problem with market share/Tarrifs in India sine they now manufacture 95% of phones there...maybe Apple should follow suit. They laughed at Obama for suggesting manufacturing in America...They don't laugh at Trump.

  11. Are crafted by Chinese sympathizers. This story is designed to convince folks to get Chinese phones because it seems like theyâ(TM)ll be the clear winners and no one wants a loser phone.

Apple is working on the India issue, where do you think those used iPhones you sell back to apple go? They are going to start producing in India.

I don't think you realise that Apple are a Chinese Manufacture. Ironically you failed to read the article; 95% of phones sold in India by Xiaomi are manufactured in India. India has made it clear they do not want to be a dumping ground for Apples old phones...and at 1% who wants Apple's Loser Phone.

  12. Google does lots and lots of evil. And China is the Evil Empire. The two are made for each other.

Ironically Google effectively shut down its Chinese operations after it discovered a cyberattack from within the country that targeted it and dozens of other companies. And while investigating the attack, Google found that the Gmail accounts of a number of Chinese human-rights activists had been hacked. It expected Microsoft and Apple to follow suit...but well money. At least Apple/Microsoft is there to actively censoring for the Chinese Government...because blood money.

  13. They do not have to work with Trump, The carriers have the power in the US. Chinese companies are already looking at the US with greedy eyes, and are already stating they are interested in entering the market. Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Xiang is confident that his company will be able to enter the US market in 2019. In context of this thread they already took India by storm.

  14. Weird how that's a truism yet the iPod and iPhone were decried for their cost when they were released.

Except the Mp3 model was a disruptive product, that was significantly better than anything before, well executed against smaller competitors, copying their established interface in a market of fanatics with Media backing, and had a great store in itunes, with amazing marketing; they are a Trillion Dollar company because of its evolution. Snartphones are an established market where smartphones have better value, more innovative products, without the fanatics and Media backing. They have a worse store, running arguably worse OS; worryingly Apples only Unique selling point is IOS. They even get in trouble with consumer groups for putting old hardware in their fixed iPhones, their brand power and halo effect are ineffective, they might even care that Apples phones are produced by rioting workers and children...but worst of all they do not have Monopoly power, without any ground braking innovation. They are going to try with an LCD dual sim phone...and I am not betting against them.

  15. Apple isn't doing well in China either.

Having looked at the figures. I was surprised Apple is doing so well at 8%...clearly pandering to the Chinese Government is still profitable. Samsung are being demolished...and are desperate for a new strategy. Unlike Apple they are not a Chinese manufacturer. If there is news with China and Apple its they are not kicking butts and taking names. Apple only produce phones once a year, and that will hurt them the rest of the year. The fact it is only .3 percent of total market share and less than .1 to them shows that they have pretty flat growth, but are in the Game. They have a new strategy of producing a cheaper(for vendors) LCD dual sim version as a market. Its clearly a different market from India, and Apple is not in the same position of being a blip in marketshare.

  16. Sadly the Apple's of the world would rather meet their margins then make a cheaper phone. They loose in countries where the people make wiser decisions on buying technology based on what their needs and wallet can afford. Not because it has a fruit on the back of them. People in India are rather agnostic to what brand they buy, just as long as it works.

Better value phones with compelling reasons to buy, real innovation and Government's/ Media that is not pro-Apple. Actual average costs of phones is being driven upwards, by great value high end phones like the Pocophone F1, and an exciting mid-range market that does more. Apple is fighting back with an LCD model that I suspect gives good margins to vendors, but worryingly for them Chinese companies other than Apple are increasingly cutting these middle men out. I don't believe that they are agnostic about brand, its just Apple as a boutique brand does not have the same draw.

  17. So why not dump them on to 1.324 billion customers nation?! Huawei and Xiaomi must be raking in tons of money while trumpeting their noses at Washington and Pentagon.

Senior veep Wang Xiang said it was developing US-specific smartphone models with a 2019 launch in mind. It is currently flush with Money from its IPO. The phone in my pocket is a Mi Max 2.

There is a slowing down of the market, but saturation is a greater cause. The average selling price is actually rising due in part to exciting developments in the mid-range and a more affordable high end phone from other phone companies. The iPhone has for a long time hit a peak market share, and its not getting the Android switchers, its dwindling Chinese market is in trouble.

Apple is not desperate by any stretch, but its shares are volatile. It latest strategy of producing a large screen LCD with dual sim as its cheaper option, and I suspect strongly like the iPad mini allows the vendors to make a good profit from them, for something in real terms almost indistinguishable from their more expensive offerings.

I think its a interesting strategy; Different than producing a plastic or smaller phone. If I was confident that it would be successful I would move my shares to Apple now.

Ignoring the fact you have chosen a Samsung expensive phone which I wouldn't personally buy for the same reasons as I wouldn't buy a Apple. The average selling price is about $260 and rising

The main reason your post is flawed, is you are comparing RRP not actual selling price and monthly drops, not releases of new models. Using your figures.

-iPhone 8 (256GB): $500 used, $849 new (Drop of 42%($350) in one model)
    - iPhone 7 (256GB): $231 used, $849 new (Drop of 73% in two models)

    - iPhone 6 (128GB): $120 used, $849 new (Drop of 86% drop in four models)

I don't really like using percentages, as the iPhone devalues significantly more than the total cost of the average phone, and significantly more than a brand new top end android phone like the Pocophone F1.

The figures show exactly what you would expect. If you are an Apple lover, buying last years model second hand after launch date is the sweet spot. As I said SELL NOW!
