While the law does not provide any "confidentiality" between a reporter and a witness, many reporters act as if it does. I've had a little journalism training, and the basic idea is a journalist has a moral obligation to protect his or her sources, even if that means jail time for "contempt of court."

I think it's his moral obligation to protect the hackers unless he believes them to be a danger. Many reporters have spent time in prison for practicing this kind of integrity.

I've been doing a bit of work putting linux on the N64 because they are the cheapest platform I can find. Most of the hard work is done since GCC for it is here but there is lots to do. I want to get the thigns to talk to each other over their high speed serial controller interface but I don't have any docs and all the sample code just isn't abuseing the hardware that way.

I figured that a cost of about AU$200 (thats about US $130) per machine, you could build a large cluster of 64 bit machines.

At least with dreamcast you won't need a custom cartrage but at least with a custom cart, there is room for a fast I/O device.

I use Mandrake 7.0 at home, and am testing 7.1 at work. One big difference between the two is 7.1 has X v4.0, which doesn't support that many graphics cards yet, but is supposed to be MUCH better than previous versions. (Faster, more features, auto detection of mouse wheel and so on)

My first real Linux install was SuSe 6.1 and I liked their package management system. I haven't tried SuSe in a while though, and I've lined up Debian as my next test distro.

I love Linux, but it's still a little rough around the edges. I'd look into using LyX on Linux for word processing. It's based on TeX and gives you much more exact and consistent results.

If you have a recent WINE snapshot you should be able to run Word 95/97 "after a fashion" as well as Juno and Yeah Write!

You also might want to try an Applixware demo.

The 386 Experience claims to have have Windows 1.0 and MS DOS 1.10 for download. I have NOT tried them, so don't blaim me if they nuke your computer.

Didn't you notice that he's a composer whose albums have terrible sales? Napster could mean instant and massive exposure of his music. I'll probably look up his music tonight and give it a listen. If I like it, I'll buy an album from his site and send him an e-mail about it.

In the days of the Romans, they used "Bread and Circuses" to keep the population stated. Today, bread is not a problem. There is more than enough food for all on Earth, and those who need to be controlled are given the bread. Those who do not are left to starve or are simply shot.

Gladiatorial matches have been replaced with WWF and sitcoms, but technology has offered new challenges to those who rule our lives.

The wealthy and powerful realized long ago that allowing technology to develop and reach the masses would allow them to do the same work in less time, so they filled our minds with visions of a "Jetsons" future with flying cars and 3 day work weeks.

In reality, they were pushing us harder. The changes were small and hard to notice.

The principle was simple. If you put frog in boiling water, it leaps out, but if you put it in cool water and slowly turn up the heat, it remains until cooked.

This is how they have kept us under control. Instead of allowing us to finish our work in less time and thus have the leisure to improve our minds and challenge their power, they have increased our work and demanded that everyone accomplish more.

Work using technology IS more efficient. We accomplish 40% more than our parents did in the same time, but we are asked to do 60% more than they did and are thus destroyed and controlled.

I'll agree with the lack of support. I've been working on a postgresql & php based site for myself, but basically there's nothing around for that combination, I guess this is more of a beef at php, but all the support seems to be aimed at mysql. I'm trying to fix that with my page. I've had a few people comment about it, so the interest is there, I'm trying to do something about the support in that area. I can't comment about the postgres support team.

OK, is anyone else disturbed by the fact that people are saying they were taken in and didn't realize it was fake until after "the first two screenshots?"

I had a "What the -" reaction when I saw the headline, noticed the icon and thought, "Hope this is a good parody."

In an ideal world where people did what they were asked, then yes, this would be fine.

We don't live in an ideal world.

Sadly, the world if full of rude and stupid people who go 50 miles per hour in a school zone and speed past stopped school busses even when the big red STOP sign is sticking out of the side. Signs don't bother them or change their behavior.

The fact that you proposed just putting up a sign leads me to suspect you're the kind of person who would see such a sign and think "Gee, I forgot to turn off my pager. I'll do that right now so I don't bother anyone." If there were more people like that, we wouldn't have people getting funding to build this technology.

Of course, if there were more people who paid attention to signs, smoking would stop, no one would speed, no one would pirate M$ products, all forest fires would be the result of lightning and lava flows and that athletic baby boomer jock wouldn't park in the space reserved for the WWII war vet with a walker and a false leg.
In short, there are too many jerks to just put up a sign.

First of all, it's not censorship. Grow up and stop complaining every time someone does something that means you can't run around being a jerk.

Second, let's see my list of places I'd like to see this deployed:

1. Discounts to Churches, Synagogs, Mosques and any other place held holy by a religion. There's just something tacky about bringing a cellphone to church. If you disrespect the religion so much as to bring in a cellphone or a beeper, then you shouldn't bother coming.
2. I know everyone and their mother has mentioned this already, but movie theaters. I saw Phantom Menace twice before I knew how lousy it was because at the start of the film a woman answered her cellphone and talked right up to where Darth Maul gets cut in half! Her voice was so annoying, I didn't even HEAR Jar-Jar.
3. Funeral homes. Never seen it myself, but you know there is some SOB who took a call during the eulogy.
4. Weddings. The happiest day of a woman's life should not be punctuated by digital bells.

That's just a partial list, but then I'm in favor of ridding the world of all the morons when I become the evil overlord of the world. (Click the link for my homepage to see the details.)

I've accepted having to reboot to run games, it's no big deal for me, but my understanding is if DirectX is implemented, any games that run under Windows 2000 should run under Linux. (Actual programmers, please correct me if I'm wrong here)

The only reason Linux isn't my primary OS is Homesite, (But GPL products with the features I need are coming along nicely, so that shouldn't be an issue for much longer) Juno (It was running under the Wine version that shipped with Mandrake 7.0, but I upgraded and everything went to heck) and Planescape: Torment. Once Mozilla is up and running and video playback under Linux is as good as it is under Windows I'll be set.

I loved automatically initialized variables when I was a beginner just figuring out how to make the speaker beep. These days automatically initialized variables would cost me hours and hours of time. The log processing client I'm working on now has spit out 20 errors about mistyped variables today (I'm an average coder but a miserable typist) and if I'd had to find them myself I'd still be working of features I finished last week!

GWBASIC and BASICA had automatic variable initialization. When was the last time you used them for a serious program? Hmmmmm? Heck, even VB allows you to turn off automatic variable initialization.

Then all you need is a transfer device to copy your code to the N64 but Nintendo has sued Bung so they have stopped selling them.

Last I heard (Shortly after they said ANYTHING about what they were making, I haven't been keeping up) there were two different chips, one optimized for running Linux and the other for Windows. The Linux chip had lower Mhz, but since Linux is more efficient anyway performance will probably be comparable.

If my memory is accurate, Linus was hired because of his knowledge of the x86 architecture. Linux became big while he was there. I read in a Linux journal interview with Linus that one thing he liked about Transmeta was they let him work on Linux. I'm pretty sure Linux compatibility was one of the tasks Linus worked on.

As soon as my company switched from dialup to ISDN we had to get used to the fact that we had no way of knowing if we had an active net connection without launching some program that checked it. I've got Juno 4.0 build 5 and Yeah Write 1.6 for Win32 running under wine. If the new snapshot allows me to run Homesite, I'm set. I'll never have to run Windows unless I want to play Planescape or Sims! This is so exciting!!!

The great thing about wine is it allows us to run various windows applications under Linux. I want to migrate our office to Linux, and leave Windows in the dust. Sadly, we need Act 4.0 to run, as well as Office. (The sales staff relies heavily on the integration between Office and Act, and there's no Staroffice, Applixware or KOffice integration available)

Our sales staff just doesn't want to leave Act, since they've customized it so much, and it works so well.

BTW: When will we be able to submit new application to the Wine database?? I've got a few listings to add, but the "database is closed to new additions."

You know, there was a time when I would have laughed at anyone who suggested a Linux user would bash a new operating system just because it's a new operating system. Now I see that the depths of human hypocrisy extend even to the supposedly "Open-Sourced" Linux community.

It's sad really. Someone comes along and builds something new, and people start tearing it apart just because it's new. Why are so many people afraid of change? For all we know, this OS could eventually whip Linux's A** in more ways than we can count, and leave us all with better operating systems as a result.

Competition is good. It forces everyone to produce better software, unless you're a small minded, frightened little child who's afraid of someone who can out code them.

Diversity is good. If there are 10 different operating systems with their own rules and procedures, then a virus or crack that kills one will leave the others untouched.

Change is good. I've heard a little about the BE API being the easiest to program, and bringing that flexibility to Open Source is a Good Thing(tm)

I remember when I was in high school, a MAC user and I would get into endless debates over which was the better system: MAC or Microsoft. (Back then they were called IBM Compatibles and not WinTel architecture)

"When I became a man I put away childish things," and when I met Linux, I put away my debates of which OS was better than the other. I started focusing on learning which OS was better for what uses.

Novell is my choice for a file server, Windows is what I throw at Newbies, Linux is my primary OS at home, and I'll be using Windows for games until that Open Source DirectX implementation comes along. I keep BE 5.0 around for those times when I manage to hose both Windows and Linux.

I want to try this new OS. It may be good for something that the others aren't. It may not. Whatever the case is, it's small, petty and childish to complain about someone creating a new operating system. They can do whatever the heck they want, it's their computer.

Stop bashing things just because they are new. If everyone attached everything that was new we'd all be sitting in caves eating grass and berries, and I don't like grass all that much.

You forget the simple fact that human beings are creative and need a challenge. Perhaps the developers think Linux is too krufty? Perhaps they wanted a GOOD API for a change? What if they just wanted an open source achievement like that of BE?

When confronted with the prospect of an unknown ocean, did Columbus shrug and say, "I already have a country to live in, why would I need to visit another?" What if Ford had said, "We already have horses, why would we need something different?" What if ID's developers has collectively decided "We already have Wolfenstein 3D, what more could we do?"

I will close with a quote from the first posting Linus made to Usenet about his then nameless OS: Do you yearn for the days when men were men and wrote their own device drivers?"

Have you ever tried saving a complex Word 97 document in Word 95 format? If it's just text with some bullets, italics and bolding it's no big deal. If you have graphics, Wordart(tm) or anything more complex than "Left Justify" you're screwed. If you like I can e-mail anyone who asks a sample of what I'm talking about. When I started here, some moron opened a WP file and saved it as a Word file. It took 10 hours to reformat the document because of the arcane features that had been used in the original.

I got this info from the Official Sim's home page. I'm addicted to the game myself.

The "Virus" is part of the Gina Pig download that you get from Maxis. The little sucker will sometimes bite your Sims and make them sick. If they're not healthy (Rested, fed, clean) the illness gets worse and kills them.

The first version of the Guni Pig download almost ALWAYS killed your sims, but Maxis released a new version with a much lower fatality rate.

A couple of curiousities came to mind while on my good ole "thinking" seat, first, should such a system be implemented, would the individuals contained within the system have the right to view, with no modification, their profile that exists within that sure to be massive profile? While I am no longer of that age group, I would surely be interested in what flags they have available. Also, since it is the child narc who is defining these flags, and bringing it to W.A.V.E. maintainers attention, here's a little example of undermining the system:

Lets say some fictional character was viewing a friend's spring break pictures where he or she were at the beach. No big deal, people in swimsuits, and so on. Now another character, who just happens to be a member of YMAP[1] sees women in swimsuits as pornographic material and jumps on the W.A.V.E. and has his profile flagged for pornography. No one would know the offense, as I doubt they keep exact records, rather a generic list of "symptoms." This character, who just wanted to see a friend's spring break, is now branded for life (or however far the db will keep the information available), as a pervert.

This system has a good idea, but its implementation is all wrong. Instead of taking the responsibility to narc on others, we should be policing ourselves with a little thing called common sense. Education instead of Censorship, Education instead of a complex system full of faults.

People argue that violence on television is a bad thing, or that portrayal of sex is a bad thing, so the soccer moms (stereotype) around the U.S. would rather have laws and just say something is illegal, instead of taking the time, sitting down, and actually explaining their child's options.

I BEG to differ re: belt drive turntables being poor. Although they do "wear" out quicker (the belt that is) they don't couple the noise from the motors onto the record itself nearly as much as direct drive. In fact, almost ALL reference players use belt drives system - arguably the BEST reference player on the market, the Clearaudio Master Reference, uses 3 motors with a belt between them driving the table. Wow. I came across this BEAUTIFUL picture
here. Its a beautiful pictoral of the
slashdot news, with captions regarding the whole
DeCSS situation with the MPAA.

I have heard, *cough*, that by using
stenography software such as The Steganos II Security Suite,
and using a key, lets just say, mmmm, the word
" slashdot ", that the entire DeCSS source code
apparently is decoded and revealed, no longer
hidden within the picture.

Mind you, I only HEARD this. Haven't TRIED it.
*grin*. I plan on distributing this pic far and
wide, for its 'aesthetic' properties. :)

All they're doing is stealing some development tools. Not even their Linux Distro is going to be open source! why would they release their actual OS????? They're goint to kill Open Source development by making it possible to run windows code on Linux, and people will begin to wonder why they would bother running Linux if their software runs faster on Win2K. Soon Linux will go the way of OS/2. The countdown has begun. Just be sure to decompile the next MS Visual C++ adn look for GNU code. They stole code from stacker for DOS 6.0, why wouldn't they steal code from the Open Source movement????
