Re:ADD?Apparently the guy who wrote the article had ADD or something. there should be a way to mod people down for making stereotypical remarks.
assuming that someone who misspells or types too fast has ADD just contributes to the stigmas of mental health. stigmas lead to intolerance which leads to hate and gets people beat up and stuff ultimately. go read up on ADD/ADHD at ADDA before you make assumptions.
i maybe be OT, but the OP is ignorant. -
Really?
I always thought AD&D was just D&D for people with a short attention span.

Another alternative.
I am considered ADD. I am an adult who has lived with it his whole life and have learned to adapt my habits and behavior.
I have never been on Ritalin. I did however find a couple of alternatives that helped me focus. I started drinking coffee in college. Almost never drank it in the morning, usually drank it in the late afternoon or evening. Something else I found that helps me is a dark chocolate bar. Not the milk chocolate, that just winds me up and makes me crave more after my insulin levels spike.
If you don't want to try Ritalin, try some caffeine to see if it makes a difference. A dark chocolate bar or cup of tea might have enough to make a difference for your situation. -
Some friendly advice...You may not have ADHD (Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder), but you may have ADD, which is basically an inability to concentrate or stick to one thing for long periods of time. I have it myself, and I know how frustrating that is. I in fact have pulled many all-nighters and that's when I produce my best work; unfortunately my body does not like that too well.
At the very least you should visit a professional therapist and have them give you a psychiatric evaluation. He/she can diagnose your problem--maybe you're just a really bad procrastinator--and perhaps prescribe some medication, if necessary.

PsuedoscienceA programmer's ability to focus on a single task for long periods to the exclusion of all else has led some people to comment on similar behavior in autistics (Asperger's Disorder), and to wonder whether most programmers are mildly autistic. I would be surprised if most programmers were autistic--our concentration is too easily broken.
I particularly like how this fellow uses Autism as a reason, then clarifies it by noting a single branch of the entire syndrome as if that's what it's *really* called, and finishes up his great assumption by explaining that autistics must have high concentration levels.
While they're in the same psychological realm, he's trying to refer to ADD.. not Autism. From ADD.org
"You get one idea and you have to act on it, and then, what do you know, but you've got another idea before you've finished up with the first one, and so you go for that one, but of course a third idea intercepts the second, and you just have to follow that one, and pretty soon people are calling you disorganized and impulsive and all sorts of impolite words that miss the point completely."Autism on the other hand is the complete inability to concentrate on ANY task for short periods of time. Autism is associated with Stims, self stimulatory behaviour. Asperger's Syndrome is a "mild" form of Autism that tends to affect mostly boys. Note that there is still a lack of common sense associated with this. Simply being quirky is not Asperger's.
A child with ADD is more than likely able to understand you when you tell him to "sit still, eat your dinner," while a child with Autism might just flick his fork around continuously while he's eating.
Credibility: I work with Autistic children, and ironically, have been diagnosed with ADD.

Niche MarketingHistory", I get the last 10 URLs I've visited
It's part of Apple's clever niche marketing strategy. In this case they are addressing the educational sub-segment suffering from ADDS

Re:Consequences of these devices: Show Length?
If the business model changes to that of integrated commercials, what happens to the standard length of a sitcom or "1 hour" drama? If there are no commercials, will they have to lengthen the actual shows to a full 30 minutes (or 60 minutes)? Can you imagine what the Actors Guild would do? TV Actors salaries?
Can the American ADD mind sit still that long? -
ADDIt's no accident that we're the first society to develop widespread ADD.
It's people like Katz who propogate ignorance about ADD Society didn't "develop" this disorder, it was there forever but was only recently diagnosed.
What was the point of this article again? Oh yeah, that there are a billion people handing out useless information on the Internet. Thanks for driving the point home, Katz.

The Treatment for ADD is Self Disciplin?
Ok, I'm not a doctor, and I have very little understanding of ADD, but this seems odd to me. As far as I can tell the article pretty much says that ADD can be effectively treated by prolonged concentration. It sounds like the viedeo games (and associated feedback) are just a means to encourage that concentration, and are fairly arbitrarily chosen. That makes me really wonder about the true nature of ADD. If it were a serious phsiological problem I wouldn't think that it could be treated quite so well with exercises in disciplined thinking.
If there's a Slashdotter who could throw some light on the nature of ADD and it's other forms of treatment it would be much appreciated. I did a little bit of reading over at www.add.org but it looks like there's a lot of data to sift through before anything even starts to become clear.
