Digital copies vs the real stuffCome on, ED, you cannot be that oblivious to the real world. Please.
There are many more reasons why the RIAA is one of the most vilified organizations in the US. Look, Baen doesn't send the police after students. They don't buy a law that trample the 4th Amendment and then use it against people who are merely suspect.
As for differences between digital copies of audio and books, you are right. However, consider that someone who loves a band will actually go out and buy their CDs, often on the mere recommendation of other fans, even if they already own MP3s of the songs. They value the physical object, the cover art, etc. A fan who has the disposable income and loves the band will fork out the $18 and buy the CD. If the disposable income is not there, then the guy is not a potential customer anyway.
Of course, this presupposes that there are bands and artistst that can gather a real fan audience and that aren't mere disposable products of a targetted marketing. If the studios had their way, we'd all be buying tepid crap.
So of course, casual listeners will just as well listen to the MP3. But please note that casual readers would just borrow the book!

Re:I feel your pain
> I have a Sony Playstation 2, and I have been converting a lot of home movies to DVD recently, and getting seriously pissed off in the process. The stupid PS2 only seems to like Verbatim DVD-R discs, and nothing else
You probably have an older PS2, and since the Verbatim are highly quality then the "no-name" brand, they are the only ones working for you.
You *can* use other media -- it depends on which *version* of the PS2 you have. The newer version 7 has much better support for media.
US PS2 Versions
UK PS2 Versions
I've been using Ritek http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVD-R-4.7-R100free .html burning at 2x on my Sony DRU-500, and they have played perfectly so far in my PS2. (Last month I picked up a 100 pack for $104, plus free shipping ... not too bad!!)
As always, check Reseller Ratings before buying online.

Done and done.
Look here for the Streambox VCR program. It's great for both video and audio feeds. Of course, you'll note the disclaimer that it's illegal to use in the United States. *shrug*

Re:Maybe it's because I'm just dumb ...
All VCR's come with a record button, this doesn't even seem odd to anyone who owns one, as a matter of fact a VCR without one would be shunned from the market. Why then does it seem a DVD is so much different than a VHS?
If you buy a VHS tape, odds are good it will be protected with Macrovision, in an attempt to discourage copy. In my mind, Macrovision and CSS serve a similar purpose (like you, I don't like either). -
Re:They are profiting off of others free programs!
Sorry...that isn't proof. They spend about 99% of the threads time talking about DVDX, which is *NOT* DVDXCOPY.
Here is a thread you should review:

And isn't it ironic?
Actually on the same day another announcement came in. Rhapsody to allow users burn BMG tracks to CD . For 99 cents a pop on top of what Rhapsody charges for monthly access it might a little bit too expensive, on the other hand, you don't have to burn the songs from the album that you don't like, and I am assuming they're using MP3 format, and that tracks do not contain any DRM 'features'.

A geek can dream, can't he?
Just as long as countering this is one of the target objectives, I have no problem with this project.

instructions how to rip the video stream tsarkonDon't forget to rip the content off the site! There is a Real Media stream, 54MB long, of this telephone symphony.
You can download it (sorry its a Win32 ripping tool) with this:Streambox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/a udio_tools/streambox_vcr.cfm
A direct link to the download is here: http://dl2.afterdawn.com/StreamBox!VCR.zip 674 KB (689,180 bytes)
And to get the video stream go here: rtsp://www.aec.at/symposium2001/Dialtones_fin12.rm
Just an FYI, the music kind of sucks. Does anyone know what the fuck they were trying to play? It sounds like a bunch of crickets and crap. If I had to sit through this I would have died of boredom.
If anyone knows how to jack .asx, .asf, .wmf, .rm and .ram files in *nix, let me know!
Here is some information from the site regarding the ripping software:
The much sought after web mirror tool which is also capable of recording video streams. This excellent piece of software is extremely hard to find nowadays.
Please read the unofficial manual for Streambox VCR for instructions on the setup and use of the software.
Note! This program is no longer supported by the author. Streambox had legal difficulties with RealNetworks Inc. and therefor this program is illegal to use in the United States -- U.S. users should not download this program!.
Unofficial manual for Streambox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1
Created: 27/Jun/2001 Last updated: 18/Sep/2001
Ever notice that most streaming media content, such as .asx, .asf, .wmf, .rm and .ram files, can be played, but not saved? Would you like to save streaming media to your Hard Disk for future playing? Of course you would!. StreamBox VCR is an easy to use utility which allows one to save streaming media to ones Hard Disk for later playing.
Although using StreamBox VCR is easy, finding it on the Internet for download is not. Moreover, the current version of StreamBox VCR, (1.0 beta 3.1) requires one to register the program, and it "phones home" everytime you queue a file for downloading. To avoid these misforuntunes, one should apply the crack that has been developed. For more on this see the Appendix at the bottom of this post, and the Readme.txt file that comes packaged with the crack.
Setting up Streambox VCR To download StreamBox VCR and the crack, see the Appendix at the bottom of this post.
After downloading both, always scan the downloads with your favourite antivirus program using updated virus definitions. Most likely the downloads will be compressed (for example, .zip files). So instruct your antivirus program to scan within compressed files. you never know !!!
If indeed compressed, extract the downloads with your favourite archive utility.
StreamBox VCR 1.0 Beta 3.1 consists of two files: vcr.exe, and intercept.exe. If one doesn't already exist, create a folder called StreamBox_VCR and place these two files in the folder. Then place this folder in C:\Program Files.
The crack contains 10 files. Place the crack executable file, fr_svcr1b31smf_crack.exe, in the same folder mentioned above, C:\Program Files\StreamBox_VCR.
Double click the crack executable and click Start. The crack shouldautomatically find the StreamBox VCR executable, vcr.exe, and modify it accordingly. When finished, you will be prompted: vcr.exe - File successfully pattched [808 bytes written].
Click, OK.
To double check that the crack worked, open StreamBox VCR by double clicking its executable, vcr.exe, and then click, Help | About. If the crack functioned properly, the following will appear in the dialogue that opens: StreamBox VCR 1 beta 31 - SMFfix.
Using Streambox VCR
Thus far I have used StreamBox VCR to download, and save to Hard Disk, file URLs indicating files of the following extensions: .asx, asf, .rm and .ram. (Note: URLs indicating an .asx or a .wmf file will be saved as an .asf file.)
Also, thus far I have been able use StreamBox VCR to download, and to save to Hard Disk, files posted with the following URL signatures:
rtsp://serverdomain/possiblesubfolder/filename
pnm://serverdomain/possiblesubfolder/filename
mms://serverdomain/possiblesubfolder/filename
http://serverdomain/possiblesubfolder/filename
StreamBox VCR should be able to download, and to save to Hard Disk, file with differet extensions than that mentioned above. I also suspect that StreamBox will be able download, and save to Hard Disk, files posted with URL signatures different than that listed above.
To use StreamBox VCR...
If the URL for a file appears as a hypelink, right click on the hyperlink and select, Copy Shortcut.
If the URL for a file does NOT appear as a hype link, you need to highlight the URL's text so as to copy it as follows:
Place mouse cursor over the very start of the URL's text.
When the cursor turns into an "I" shape, left click mouse and keep the left mouse button depressed.
With the left mouse button still depressed, move the mouse so as to highlight the entire URL text.
When the entire URL text is highlighted, release the left mouse button.
Place the cursor over the highlighted URL text.
Right click mouse and select, Copy.
Open StreamBox VCR by double clicking the file, vcr.exe.
In the StreamBox VCR menu bar click, Edit | Paste Link.
The file's URL is automatically queued for download. If you like, select a different location to download the file to. Also, click any of the Tabs to modify StreamBox VCR's settings and download options. In particular, check out the Time, and Connection Tabs.
Click OK. File download starts automatically.
To check out information concerning the download, click the file's entry as appears in the StreamBox VCR main program interface.
To modify StreamBox VCR's setting and download options on the fly, right click the file's entry in the StreamBox VCR main program interface. Here, if you click Properties, the same dialogue will appear as seen in step c.) above.
When the download is finished a check mark will appear besides the files entry.
StreamBox VCR allows multiple simultaneous downloads, and download stopping/resuming.
If there are multiple file URLs listed on a page that you would like to download, simply highlight all the file URLs as described above (Note: it does not mattter if they are hypelinks or not), open StreamBox VCR, and click, Edit | Paste Link. A separate dialogue will appear for each file queued in this fashion.

Blu-Ray will kill thisThe laser disc innovations have always been (at least partly) developed in Japan and so is this time with blue-laser products. Japan is going to start terrestial digital TV broadcasting in 2003 and the blue-laser recordables and the standard was developed to allow Japanese consumers -- who luckily aren't yet being raped by media companies -- record digital TV in full resolution (MUCH better picture quality than in DVD) and using bitrates of around 25Mbps (average DVD movie is MPEG-2 ABR of 5Mbps).
And once you have a market that exists, that will probably very rapidly have cheap blank discs, recorders, PC recorders, etc does anyone seriously consider that "HD-DVD" (blurry MPEG-4 on DVD-9...) has any chance of surviving? I can stick 12 full DVD-9 movies to one Blu-Ray flipper without re-encoding, so its kinda no-brainer.
And if you read specs, people, you already know that both formats (Blu-Ray is already "ready", HD-DVD still under negotiations) will include support to older formats (VCD, SVCD, DVD).

Re:Okay, here's what I want.
I've done this but not exactly as you ask. First I rip the DVD to the HD using a program called SmartRipper
Then I play back the DVD's complete with working menus by using Power DVD Pro 4.0. It's capable of loading the movie off of the harddrive. Additional ways to play the ripped movie is covered on the webpage.
Output to the tv is handled by my Matrox G400 dualhead. I actually watch on the PC though as my monitor is larger then the TV. Sound is through my SB live value which I dump though the stereo-out to my VCR and into my reciever. Really it's all hacked together but I can't complain I needed most of the components anyways. A few more cables and it all worked out.
The software used is all run under Win2k and the PC is a P3 450 with 256meg and a 60 gig HD. BTW 2 movies I have on there currently are GhostWorld and Metropolis(Disk1). Right there you can kiss 22 gigs of HD space away. But it is nice to have instant loading of the menus, and the removal of region codes. In a couple of years this may be more useful but currently HD space costs double that of buying the DVD on average. I did it mostly to see if It could be done. -
streaming is good but downloading is better
I'd rather download something than stream it. Streams are often much lower quality and it prevents you from time-shifting it, which you should be able to do. For this reason I use Streambox VCR, which you can download here, for downloading
.RM files and ASFRecorder, downloadable here, which lets you download streaming Windows Media files, so that you can time shift those as well. -
Re:Damn it
If it's too slow to stream, download it and play it off your hard disk.

Is this old news?
The file. CDFS.ZIP turned up after a search on Google with a number of links to download from.
It seems that this file is at least a few years old. So I believe nothing has really been 'broken' here as the file has been floating around the web for quite awhile. Although useful, it's nothing revolutionary..
Taken from AfterDawn.com
This is an incredible software driver for you lucky ones who have a supported CD-ROM drive. This file replaces the existing Windows' CDFS.VXD -file and after installation shows the content of your audio CDs as WAV files which you can copy directly to your hard drive. So, if your drive works with this one, it makes ALL the external CD rippers obsolete. Not for NT, sorry..
