Qatar also has food subsidies, but they're decreasing them to spend the money getting ready for the World Cup in 2022. But they import 40% of their food from Saudi Arabia, so see above.

Re:The supreme irony is.... Kuwait
al Bawaba - the site that this story was taken from - is a website that's Arab centric, and in terms of opinion, tends to be Arab supremacist. Just go to their cover page and you'll see that. If they got it wrong, it's certainly not out of any desire to vindicate Trump, as might have been the case had Breitbart or any other site come up w/ it

The supreme irony is.... Kuwait
You want irony? Check this out - Kuwait has done exactly the same thing: only that they added 2, and didn't include 4 of the countries in question. Syria, Iran and Iraq are common, Kuwait added Pakistan and Afghanistan (which some critics in the US have been asking about) while they didn't include Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya.
Luckily for Kuwait, there are no Bush appointed judges acting at the behest of Bozos or Nadella to help those companies not only continue to undermine the US economy, but also seriously endanger us. And for those Leftist pooh-baahs who 'point out' that nobody from these 7 countries have killed anyone, they've not followed anything about the Somalis in Minneapolis, nor that Somali who did that Ohio State attack. Yeah, technically, nobody got 'killed', but that doesn't mean that no terror attack happened!!!
I'm fine w/ US citizens who are stupid enough to go to those 7 countries get vetted to make sure that they indeed do suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome. Only thing - they should be kept there as citizens, and never return

Re: The Great War
The Washington Post is no authority on Shariah. Shariah derives from the various schools of Islamic jurisprudence, which is when a religion's 'thou shalt' rules are translated into laws that are to be implemented. There are 4 Sunni, and a couple of Shi'ite schools. The Sunni ones being Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali. Different Muslim countries follow different types. Hanafi is generally followed by most Asian Muslim countries, like in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, the stans, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. Shafi'i is followed in Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Maliki is followed in much of North Africa, excluding Egypt, Sudan, Eritria, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Hanbali is unique and would probably be a statistical aberration, except that it's followed in Saudi Arabia and Qatar: Wahabism is the major implementation of Hanbali doctrine. From the Shia schools, there is Jafari, which is followed in Iraq and Bahrein, while in Iran, the Khomenei doctrines are followed.
In all these countries (in India, Muslims having their own separate civil law, since they are a minority), civil laws are laid out according to the above list. Which is why they have laws that variably allow marital rape, convict rape victims of adultery and only spare them when they marry their rapist.. All this has its underpinnngs in Islam - where a woman who accuses anybody of rape has to produce 4 witnesses, where the testimony of 2 women are equal to that of a man (and the weightage even varies according to the religion of the contestants: any testimony by a Muslim is worth a lot more than testimony by n number of infidels, where n varies according to the latter's religion, but is never equal to or less than 1).
The countries that were listed - we often hear that their people are peaceful, but it's these parties (like Boko Haram, Taliban, ISIS) which are the problem. In which case, why are >25% of people in all of them supportive of terrorism 'in certain cases'? And Bangladesh is not a country that has any protracted conflict. It's an economic basketcase, no doubt, but so are a lot of (non-Muslim) countries, whose people do not support Shariah. And Bangladesh's population is 160M, and 25% of that is 40M. So you have 40M people there who think that things like suicide bombings, or terror attacks are 'sometimes' justified.
As for Rwanda, that was a well known tribal civil war b/w Hutus and Tutsis. Neither side invoked Christianity while slaughtering each other the way Jihadists invoke Islam
I might be the other side of the ISIS coin if I thought that my religion should be supreme throughout the world. Yet, I have nothing against Christians, Jews, Taoists, Buddhists, Shintos, Rastafarians, Scientologists or anyone else. So your attempt at a tu quoque falls flat

Re:Software Engineering is trying
.. to become a rigorous engineering discipline. It's not quite there yet. I am not convinced that it ever will be. Writing software is a creative process, arguably even an artistic one. Well understood rules can be followed, provably correct algorithms applied, formal design methods used, but it is still a human creative process, and as such, I suspect inherently non-rigorous.
Computer Science compared to Software Engineering?
Think aeronautics. The science of aeronautics ponders the laws of aerodynamics and the laws of flight.
Engineering aeronautics is all about building the damn aircraft.http://blog.soufun.com/blogweb/blog_manage/gratulate.aspx/userid=23799432

Re:Berne Convention can go piss up a ropeThe rich bastards who own the corporations really rule the world, but they're working hard to quell a counter-revolution.
What counter-revolution?
You look at countries like China and what you see is a second capitalist revolution - a world recast in the mold of entrepreneurs like Bill Gates.
60% of Microsoft's revenues come from outside the U.S. and it is seeing 30% growth in emergent markets like China - each quarter.
Wunderman scoops 10 Dubai Lynx awards at 1st Dubai Advertising Festival [Dubai based agency wins awards based on campaigns for Microsoft and others]
Xbox 360 championship [Microsoft sponsors competition that launches Dubai's Mid-East champion professional video game team on a world tour]How about "expanding" fair use in the US to what the founding fathers envisioned, and "limiting" the endless copyrights that would have appalled them?
Which "founding father" would that be?
Ben Franklin - who owned the printing press?
The Franklin whose independent and solidly middle class income made charitable gifts of his inventions possible?
In the 150 or so authors represented in the Library of America how many men and women of working class origins do you see before the era of extended copyright and how many after?
Thomas Jefferson, born into the southern plantation elite?
The gentleman farmer who could spend half a lifetime in Europe and never see the industrial revolution in progress?
"Fair Use" doesn't have much meaning in a world where only the slave owner can safely read, write or publish anything - and the only reward for the laborer is bare survival.
It is a world in which the geek can seem altogether too comfortable.
Alexander Hamilton, the tireless campaigner for a strong central government?
The quintessential New Yorker - linked forever to the capitalist's universe of private property, banking, trade and manufacturing? Oh yeah- I refuse to honor ANY copyright held by a corporation. Only a writer or painter or other artist should hold a copyright. Disney can go to hell (actually he probably already did).
The geek has no conception of art as a collective or corporate enterprise. Shakespeare began as an actor and retired as part owner of a theatrical company. Disney as an independent - largely self-taught - animator in Kansas, of all places.
The geek is obsessed with his right to free entertainment from the major studios. His right to produce derivative works. Fan fiction by any other name.
Let's be honest here.
Steamboat Willie is eight minutes of silent era sight gags with a thin narrative thread and synchronized sound-on-disk. The geek doesn't want Steamboat Willie.
What he wants is the instantly recognizable characters, character designs and voices of the Mouse and Pete as they have evolved in eighty years in of Disney films, comics and videos.
He wants a known-good set of blueprints. He can't hack it on his own.

Re:I would think it is obvious..For cleaning our own house, we're working on it. What can I, as a New Yorker, do about stuff overseas?
In answer to one of your complaints,
CAIR issues fatwa against terrorism.
Arab scholars issue joint tolerance fatwa, that no Muslim may excommunicate any other Muslim, and thus may not kill them. They also said that certain civil engineers may not give fatwas without knowledge (a dig at Osama Bin Laden).
Muslims ARE speaking out against violence and terrorism. Don't blame me if you never asked a Muslim. -
Re:And in other news...What evidence do you have of their presence in Iraq?
Here is a start. Or this. Try going to news.google.com and search on iraq + al qaeda, or al-Zarqawi. Its not hard to find.
So, why are ordinary Iraqis being imprisoned and tortured, even if they have nothing to do with Al Qaeda or terrorism?
By whom? I don't think the US is doing this. There was the rogue bunch of soldiers at Abu Gharaib, but most of them are already in jail for their crimes. Several months agao there were some Iraqi interior ministry units that were going rogue, but they are being reigned in following raids by the US and other Iraqi government agencies.
We also have a War on Drugs. Does that mean that drug users should be denied constitutional or international law rights?
The war on drugs, like the war on poverty, isn't a "real" war, a shooting war. Its metaphor.
Please explain this. If they are not enemies in a war, then they are civilians, and deserve civilian protections. If they are enemies in a war, then they should be treated as POWs. There is no third category recognized under US or international law.
Yes, there is, that is where the term "unlawful combatant" or enemy combatant comes in. You have to obey the law of war and the treaty to qualify for the special protections and privileges of the treaty. Al Qaeda and company regularly commit war crimes, and fail the tests in Convention III, article 4, paragraph 2:(2) Members of other militias and members of other volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, belonging to a Party to the conflict and operating in or outside their own territory, even if this territory is occupied, provided that such militias or volunteer corps, including such organized resistance movements, fulfil the following conditions:[
(a) that of being commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;
(b) that of having a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance;
(c) that of carrying arms openly;
(d) that of conducting their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.
Al Qaeda fails at least 3 of the 4 tests and therefore doesn't qualify for POW status under the Geneva Convention provisions. If you really did read them, you know that means they aren't entitled to prepare their own food, and get paid a wage, for example.
Paragraph 6 refers to a Levee en mass and doesn't apply.
Why is it silly?
To try and prove that there isn't a war because some prisoners do not qualify for the special protections of prisoner of war status under the Geneva Conventions is silly. -
Re:Peace , definitely Good!
Noticing a pattern here... Ironically enough, these improvements are likely to help develop the software for those that Israel considers to be their enemies (the Arab world and Persia, being Iran and parts of Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan).
Actually Turkey and Isreal have pretty relations and have recently signed an agreement to combat terroism:
