USA violates Human rights
U.S. ground forces in Iraq are using cluster munitions with a very high failure rate, creating immediate and long-term dangers for civilians and friendly soldiers, Human Rights Watch reported today.

650 liberated civillians!!! just 22,500,000 to go!! Go, go, USA!!!!

War is Over, if you want it. -
Simple one-step censorship
Perfect! Now the government can censor Al Jazeera and Arab News with the touch of a button!

back up
Looks like they are back up. Still no english news coverage, but presumably that's only a normal matter of triage priorities.

Volunteering to help Al-Jazeera?
Has anyone volunteered to help Al-Jazeera get its online, English news coverage, stable? Wether by volunteering skills or resources? I've noticed english.aljazeera.net is all in Arabic now, and still using IIS...
I would be willing to volunteer some skills and resources. Why would I volunteer to help Al-Jazeera?
1) I support free speech, even if I don't agree with what's being said.
2) I can't even READ what the biased opinion of Al-Jazeera is because the site is in Arabic, overloaded, DoS'd, or cracked, and I don't have a satellite dish.
3) All news services are biased in one manner or another. I can make up my own mind about what I read and hear, but I still need to see what is being reported.
Perhaps Al-Jazeera wouldn't even trust anyone to help them with all the problems they seem to be having. I like some of the previously posted ideas of using P2P, like Gnutella, to distrubute the load more. I'm sure a whole host of things could be contributed by volunteers to get their English coverage up again. -
Domain Names Now Taken
The english domain name for Aljazeera have now been redirected to someone else.
Goto either http://english.aljazeera.net or http://www.aljazeera.net and you will get "Under Construction" pages. The english page says "This Page has Been Taken Over By Saimoon Bhuiyan".
As I write this, someone put up a "Let Freedom Ring...", saying they are a patriot. It disguists me when someone tries and say they support freedom, when they squelch someone else's freedom of speech. -

usa puts al-jazeera on its restricted list
The english version of the Al-Jazeera TV's website was online since Monday. The adress is:
http://english.aljazeera.netI could see it on Thursday and now it is gone. Washington Post has a article about a hack attack. Apparently the name of the website does not resolve.
What i found very suspicious are these imposter sites:
http://www.aljazeerah.us/ and http://www.aljazeerah.info/
Only the latter has a little headline that the website is not connected in any way to Al-Jazeera TV.These sites can be easily confused with the original site and it already happened.
Imagine something like foks.news in a arab country without a clear statement that it is not us media.ps: I already submitted the story about the imposter sites but slashdot did not post it. That's why i am posting it here...

Re:English Al-Jazeera
Interesting, http://english.aljazeera.net/ could not be found. Maybe it is being DOS'd now too?

Some info here; another very quick website
http://www.aljazeerah.info/
It contains also links from the main arab sources. I don't know if is really the TV station because actually I read also the http://english.aljazeera.net (this is down since the other one is up) and is really not keeping the same tone. They are more anti-american as the first version was... But it worths a look.
Anyway if you have the ability to mix up information you will be able to put up your own opinion based on all the news.
Also I have noted a very big difference between CNN, FOX and other stations. Just look at the NOTE from the end of CNN's pages on war pages. MSNBC, on the other hand, seems to balance the lack of accurate information with stronger opinion articles and editorials. -
Al-Jazeera changes DNS and backbone providersIt's back up, at least intermittently. The "english" site is currently all in Arabic, though.
Al-Jazeera has changed DNS providers. Their "whois" data changed in the last update. Datapipe and Nav-Link are out, MyDomain is in. Four different DNS servers are listed, in different netblocks.
They've also switched to the Telia backbone. Telia is Scandanavia's largest backbone carrier, and is headquartered in Sweden.
It looks like they're getting the connectivity problem fixed. They're still on overload, with frequent "connection refused" messages, but sometimes you can get through.

Try this. It's heavily

Re:Hate to mess up the |-|@0R auguement, but...
The only thing I could dig up on Al Jazeera in English right now is their marketing page:
http://www.aljazeera.net/e-marketing-eng/2002/5/5- 5-1.htm
Actually has some interesting numbers on their demographics and what not.
Does visiting the Al Jazeera site mean that I am put into a Homeland Defense Database or something?
Haha. I am Mexico...
oops. The doorbell just rang.....That had better be the Land Shark. -
Al-Jazeera in english
News for infidels, stuff that matters.
Seems to be down at the moment, though. -
Saw this yesterday ...
Ars Technica had this yesterday (scroll down a bit). Al Jazeera is basically toast (last time I tried to access it) but it's hard to say on this end whether that is [a] DoS attack(s) or just everyone suddenly going, "I should check that out
..." -
Re:Military targets?Would similar online media outlets be similarly classified?
It's not a "similar" outlet. Unless you mean to bomb any foreign media that don't toe Rumsfeld's line. In spite of David Letterman sketches, al-Jazeera is neither Afghani or Iraqi, but is based in Qatar.
See this article on its origins.
Today, al-Jazeera is staffed by many of the same [BBC] journalists I saw weeping in London that day, including Azar. It is the lone Arabic broadcast outlet to put truth and objectivity above even its survival. For its pains during the five years of its existence, it has been attacked by virtually every government in the Middle East.
They've also got a new English service. (Which was heavily overloaded even before this, so you'll have a hard time seeing it.) -
English Al-Jazeera
More pointedly, the DOS'ing of the Al-Jazeera web site coincides with the debut of its English counterpart.
The truth will remain elusive. -
use P2P
you can find it here. It's been hacked, but should come up shortly I bet. However, their controversial footage which is probably what you are looking for, is not available there. It's not available anywhere else due to heavy censorship, so you may have to check your favorite P2P network. Searching for 'jazeera' brings up some interesting results.
BTW, we've all heard claims that P2P networks are only used to steal music, movies, etc. This is about the first good example of P2P being used for a valid cause - to share news and avoid censorship. (aren't we supporting freedom of speech after all?) -
War on line: Al Jazeera went off line
Looks like Americans do not tolerate any media they cannot control. Al Jazeera went off line soon after they started featuring news in English.

Please, help STOP the WAR :(
War is not a game. Bush and Saddam are happyly sitting in their sofa watching TV, while Civilians keep dying
:(:
Pictures don't lie:
Soldiers and civillians suffer
War is not a game (Hard images)
And children are the most affected.
Censored Version by US/UK press
You would think this is not the place to post that. But the war, and the people dying there are more important than a fucking article. -

Unbiased War News?
I recommend looking to The Onion. It is, after all, America's Finest News Source.
In all seriousness, I shall probably be checking the BBC's web site regularly (News Ticker (Win32) | RSS), as well as buying a decent newspaper for greater depth and insight.
Of course, for those committed to both sides of the argument, I recommend visiting Al-Jazeera with the use of a Arabic-English translator. Apparently, Al-Jazeera will soon be launching an English language service (e.g. the end of March).

2003 tech 1984 covarage
All this tech looks really impressive, but don't count on real coverage affter all this is a war we are fighting to win not to pull out because of political pressure, count on some quality propaganda
I have seen more with low tech 128kbs video feed because it's from the perspective of those getting bombed rather then those dropping them. -
Re:Ok then, i'm dead serious. The Economist. BBC. Reuters. Agence France Presse. Pravda. (It's a sad day when Americans have to read Pravda to find out what's going on.) The Jerusalem Post (which has less pro-Israel spin on Israel issues than the US press). All are available in English.
Also, read Al-Jazeera, the only real news outlet in the Arab world. They don't publish in English, but the Ajeeb translation site will translate it for you.
In the business press, there's too much cheerleading. It's not like the old days, when Malcom Forbes Sr. ran Forbes, ran tough stories about corporate corruption, and accepted the risk of lawsuits. ("Go ahead, sue me. I'm a billionare.")

Bzzt - *wrong*. Thank you for playing."It appears MSNBC is reporting that Linux has failed as an operating system. By citing the large Linux hype as reason for Linux to be dominating the market, they draw the conclusion that the "open source" alternative has flopped as an operating system. They briefly mention the success of Linux in the server community, but really the article gives Linux as little credit as possible."
Bzzt. Wrong. Did we even read the *same article*? Your "review" is a complete mischaracterization of the article; we don't need more FUD there, Chief.
The article merely noted that Linux was hyped to death for the desktop and hasn't made the huge splash there that many expected it to. Article says that corporate interest in Linux is *growing* and that it's making inroads to the consumer desktop with Wally World's cheap boxen.
It does not give little credit to Linux, or say anything about "open source" (or Linux) failing as an operating system. BTW, "open source" is not an operating system; it's a class of software.
The only one drawing conclusions here seems to be *you*. Try to acquire some reading comprehension skills before spouting off; and Taco - WTF made this a worthy submission?
For those of you who keep spazzing about how
/. ain't bein' properly journalistic and all...here's a clue: /.!=news /. is a blog, nothing more, nothing less. It ain't news, it's kewl shizat for nerds. If you want reputable news, go read Al Jazeera. And if you can't read Arabic try translation from Ajeeb. -
What's the problem? It's not a worry for the US. Americans can look at the rest of the world without any real obstacles. Even at the depths of the Cold War, you could subscribe to Soviet Life or find the Great Soviet Encyclopaedia in major libraries. Today, you can read Pravda or Al-Jazeera (which you can get translated.)
The parts of the world with heavily censored media (which includes China and most of the Arab world) are the ones scared of the Internet. With good reason; they have governments that need a totally ignorant population to survive. In time, the people there will sort out the blithering from the reality.
In the US, we have spin control in the major media, but almost everything important gets reported somewhere.
The Friedman article grumbles that anti-Israel propaganda is getting a forum. But pro-Israel propaganda has a forum too. Quit complaining.

Re:Midly offtopicBBC is the propaganda arm of the London government, and as such, its wide availability does a big service to the UK. As a Brit you should rejoice that all of Africa and many other places in the world swear by the BBC. I think it's the most popular station in Afghanistan, and has been even under the Taliban, who couldn't jam it because Taliban soliders would revolt if they couldn't listen to BBC soap operas. I'm not kidding! What this sort of penetration means is that the world tends to see things your way even before you send in the tanks and bombers. It's also much cheaper.
As an American, one thing I like about the BBC is that it doesn't lay on the propaganda quite as thick as domestic media sources.
As far as other state-run content sources, the NPR homepage has a lot of stuff. In some ways it's better than the BBC, because all of their major programs are saved as
.rm files and you can play them back in pieces any time. (If only they'd be OGG files...) The CBC has a similar deal--a bit smaller, but the content is a bit better. For news, I'm also a fan of the Deutsche Welle and the Tagesshau. I find the German world news to be a bit more objective than the BBC. I know there is also a French equivanlent, but my French is very bad. In the last few months I also really wished I spoke Arabic, because the Al Jazeera site seems to have a lot of content. Hey, if Americans feel they need to bomb it, it's got to be good! (Though I guess Al Jazeera isn't state-run.) Anyway, there are a lot of news sources online. If you sift through a wide range of them, you can sort of zero in on the truth. The BBC is a good site, thought I think their news coverage is often pretty shallow. -
Yay, now big TV networks are Censoring
According to the New york times they are now censoring there own self, at the governments request. The US even asked Qatar to pressure the only independent 24 news media in the middle east AlJazeera. Too bad it doesnt have an english department yet. The channel that brought exclusive video of the 'enemy' Frankley this can only be bad but what can we expect from a government that on one hand says were all for freedom and on the other hand pressures the world to silence so we only hear what the administration says.
