Are you kidding me?
I guess I should be surprised that this sort of nonsense made it to the front page, but that's nothing new. (To protest this sort of poor article choice, I encourage you to visit the Jihad.
I've never seen any evidence, in years of running my own mail server, that shutting down for several days stops any spam traffic at all. I run my email domain off my cable modem, so from time to time I will lose service for several days. After it comes back, so does the spam, every single time.
I don't think the author of this article gets it. The spam zombie software that exists on so many people's home computers is not intelligent. It's fire-and-forget. If the message bounces, they don't even issue a "QUIT" command. They just drop the connection. Same goes for 4xx "not right now" style messages. (That's why things like greylisting work so well. -
IP-Wars?
Nice link to IP-Wars in the article. Maybe Groklaw will link to anti-slash in retatliation.

not exactly...
hey guys,
i'm not sure exactly what i'm doing here. so...bear with me!
i clicked "geeky" on my match.com personals profile, thinking that i'd maybe get hooked up with somebody who was into math or some kind of toy train hobby or something...boy howdy was i in for a shock! i went on 4 dates with guys who all got on match.com because of osdn personals from slash-dot! 4 guys!
anyway, it didn't really work out with any of them, because it seemed like they were all under some kind of mind-control robot or something! i was like "what do you think about office? office 97 is enough for me, but there are some things about xp that are cool too...." the first guy i asked that to exploded on this tyrade about how office was evil, and that it uses html that's invalid...blah blah blah, whatever...i figured "ok, this guys a freak, but i'm not giving up that easily." so guy number two and i are having dinner, and just as a test i bring up office, and he says the *exact* *same* *things* the first guy said! it was like he was reading from a script! i'm thinking to myself "is everybody from slash-dot programmed to say the same thing or what?" i decided to do a bit of investigation.
i actually surfed over to slash-dot and read some of the articles...mostly they were pretty boring, and the comments were just like i expected judging from my previous past experience: scripted!!! just when i was about to completely write the whole thing off, i found a post from some guy who's with anti-slash, some kind of anti-slash-dot website. i mailed him and was all "i so agree with you guys, look at what sheep these slash-dot people are!" he wrote back and made some funny comments (funny and so *true*!...that is soooo the best kind of humor...but i dirgress...) and guess what? this weekend i'm supposed to meet him for dinner :) if you're reading this, i look forward to meeting you in person, john!
anyway, that's my story. ladies: if you're looking for the real cool geeks, check out anti-slash. and fellas, you should check it out too and maybe use to to break out of your mind-control suits!

Attn: Scott Long: Consider the Jihad
Let me begin by expressing my genuine thanks at your endorsement of my post. A man of your stature will be a great help to our cause!
Consider the following evidence against the infidels: anti-slash has recently compiled a library of injustices that precisely document the abuses of slashdot's editors. From the stupidity to the censorship, you can view and share the facts all recorded in one place.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to invite you to use the database tool. With this database of highly-moderated slashdot posts, you can repost and gain carma for future jihad operations, and suck up mod points and pollute the meta-moderation system. These disruptive activities help lower slashdot's already low signal-to-noise ratio and further discredit the editors.
Again, thank you for your consideration and may Allah grant light the fire of jihad within your soul (now that you're not busy trying to create 5-stable, you should have plenty of time for anti-slash :) ).

Future FreeBSD releases
I've been concerned lately with the freebsd release cycle...fbsd has been working on a stable 5 relase for over 2 years now. I was **really** glad to see the following mail from Scott Long, an freebsd core developer, regarding a new release engineering cycle for FBSD 6 and beyond. Check it out:
All,
FreeBSD 5.3 is about to be announced this weekend and will signal the
true kick-off of the 5-STABLE and 6-CURRENT series. We are very excited
about this, both because 5.3 is a good release, and because 6.0 will
give us a chance to, erm, redeem ourselves and our development process
=-)
5.x was a tremendous undertaking. SMPng, KSE, UFS2, background fsck,
ULE, ACPI, etc, etc, etc were all incredible tasks. Given that many of
these things were developed and managed by unpaid volunteers, the fact
that we made it to 5-STABLE at all is quite impressive and says a lot
about the quality and determination of all of our developers and users.
However, 4 years was quite a long time to work on it. While 4.x
remained a good work-horse, it suffered from not having needed features
and hardware support. 5.x suffered at the same time from having too
much ambition but not enough developers to efficiently carry it through.
By the middle of 2002 is was very apparent that we needed to start
focusing on getting 5.0 released. Unfortunately, we fell into the trap
of wanting to finish more features in order to feel good about 5.x. We
kept on ignoring the fact that 5.x already had a lot of good and needed
features, and that the number one goal needed to be to get it stabilized
and turned into 5-STABLE. Instead we drew up a road map document that
dictated releases based on features rather than on stability and, even
more importantly, timeliness.
It is also important to consider the injustices of slashdot's editors. This topic
can be researched more on anti-slash
There has been quite a bit of discussion about this over the past week
by the developer community. The proposal that I and Poul-Henning have
set forth is to stop gating releases, both major and minor, or features,
and instead gate them on a schedule that is both reasonable and timely.
New -STABLE branched will be made on a calendar-based time line, and
point releases on those branches will be made at regular intervals. We
are still debating the exact time line, but it will fall somewhere
between doing a new -STABLE branch every 12-18 months, and doing point
releases every 4-6 months.
While as engineers we all tend to hate timelines, this does have a lot
of positive aspects. First, it increases the predictability of the
development both for our users and for our developers. Users can plan
effectively for upgrades and testing/validation knowing that there will
be major and minor releases at fixed times of the year. Developers can
judge when to start new projects and when to focus on bug-fixing because
there will no longer be the temptation to delay a release by a month in
order to slide 'one more thing' in. This is not unlike most commercial
OS vendors, and we've received a _LOT_ of feedback that this method of
planning is desperately needed.
Second, it means that development efforts for major features will
continue to shift out of CVS and into Perforce. This already happens
quite a bit, so it's not as radical of a change as it seems. CVS HEAD
will remain the 'experimental' development branch, but large items will
not be brought into it until they are functionally complete and
integrated. HEAD may still get unstable from time to time, but it
hopefully won't turn into the collision of lots of half-done
experimental things like it has in the recent past. It also means that
if a major feature isn't done in time for a -STABLE branch-point that it
can continue to be developed outside of the CVS tree and be made ready
for the next scheduled branch po -

P2P newssource: circumvent mainstrm media: Osama
Of course, cnn didn't have the full transcript of Bin Laden's new tape...where did I find it? P2P, of course. I'm so glad this resource is available so I don't have to rely on the machine for information.
Here's the transcript of Osama's new video:
"O American people, I am speaking to tell you about the ideal way to avoid another Manhattan, about war and its causes and results.
"Security is an important foundation of human life and free people do not squander their security, contrary to Bush's claims that we hate freedom. Let him tell us why we did not attack Sweden for example.
"It is known that those who hate freedom do not possess proud souls like those of the 19, may God rest their souls. We fought you because we are free and because we want freedom for our nation. When you squander our security we squander yours.
"I am surprised by you. Despite entering the fourth year after Sept. 11, Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you and therefore the reasons are still there to repeat what happened.
"God knows it did not cross our minds to attack the towers but after the situation became unbearable and we witnessed the injustice and tyranny of the American-Israeli alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, I thought about it. And the events that affected me directly were that of 1982 and the events that followed -- when America allowed the Israelis to invade Lebanon, helped by the U.S. Sixth Fleet.
"In those difficult moments many emotions came over me which are hard to describe, but which produced an overwhelming feeling to reject injustice and a strong determination to punish the unjust.
"As I watched the destroyed towers in Lebanon, it occurred to me punish the unjust the same way (and) to destroy towers in America so it could taste some of what we are tasting and to stop killing our children and women.
"We had no difficulty in dealing with Bush and his administration because they resemble the regimes in our countries, half of which are ruled by the military and the other half by the sons of kings ... They have a lot of pride, arrogance, greed and thievery.
"He (Bush) adopted despotism and the crushing of freedoms from Arab rulers and called it the Patriot Act under the guise of combating terrorism.....
"We had agreed with the (the Sept. 11) overall commander Mohammed Atta, may God rest his soul, to carry out all operations in 20 minutes before Bush and his administration take notice.
"It never occurred to us that the commander in chief of the American forces (Bush) would leave 50,000 citizens in the two towers to face those horrors alone at a time when they most needed him because he thought listening to a child discussing her goat and its ramming was more important than the planes and their ramming of the skyscrapers. This had given us three times the time needed to carry out the operations, thanks be to God...
"And as the computer programmers sit and digest the news of the day, they allow the injustices of slashdot's editors to go unpunished. Many emotions have come over me about this, and I have personally authorized sacred jihad against slashdot's editors
"Your security is not in the hands of (Democratic presidential candidate John) Kerry or Bush or al Qaeda. Your security is in your own hands and each state which does not harm our security will remain safe. -

Warning Geeks: Stay away from ribbed condoms
Dudes: Do not switch to ribbed condoms. This is my story.
After running out of condoms, my girlfriend and I decided to try ribbed condoms. We both thought it was going to be a marketing gimic, but we figured we should try.
Now, I cannot spend any free time with the computer, because I am duty-bound to have sex!
This may seem like a dream come true, but when you're 27 instead of 19, you'd like to hit the skins maybe once per day and call it good. But OH NO, not now that my dick is super-charged with the orgasmic power of rib technology. I get home from work; she reaches for the condom drawer. I wake up, she's putting a condom on my dick. I try to go to bed...you get the idea.
DON'T BUY THE RIBBED ONES GUYS!!!

Ever notice the "beat the rush and see it early" link at the top of slashdot when a new story is about to come out?
Sounds good, doesn't it? To be able to view the pages linked to in the article before the tens of thousands of other slashbots click to view them.
Did it ever occur to you that you're taking part in cyber-terrorism?
That's right: Slashdot's editors are cyber-terrorists. They coordinate a DOS against small websites, and they attempt to collect moeny from people who wish to be spared the effects of said DOS. Terrorism, plain and simple.
You can fight this and other crimes by slashdot's editors by joining anti-slash. Anti-slash is committed to forcing the editors to own up to their numerous crimes against the geek community. Until our demands are met, we will relentlessly discredit them as a news service through trolling and other means.
Also, props to poopbot and the alan thicke troll. We remember your accomplishments.

Re:Global job competition is fine if and only if .
The parent post is at best devil's advocate, and at worst a clear and obvious troll. Just look at some of the exaggerated claims.
Major international companies would "play shell games" to cut deals with slave-employing dictatorships? Please. Somehow, we manage to hit Cuba and North Korea pretty hard with sanctions. the Wal-Marts of the world simply cannot escape enforcement and use illegal sources as their primary suppliers.
And just look at what happens with goods that are still illegal, if you want to refute that ridiculous Prohibition analogy. Modern drug cartels aren't as economic as you'd think. They cut every corner and use every unethical trick, but the costs of smuggling, violence, private armies, and police actions make drugs enormously more expensive than they would be if they were produced legally in the US by well-paid union workers. Criminal organizations cannot compete with legal ones in any environment that has enough law enforcement to protect the legal ones from outright violence.
All of the arguments the parent presents against a unified currency are totally unrealistic. The fact is, a properly implemented unified currency and *good* universal trade, labor, and environmental laws would be greatly beneficial to just about everyone in the long run, except those living under oppressive governments-but those guys are screwed anyway. The reason this doesn't happen yet is because nobody can manage to do it right. The UN is stifled by bureaucracy and politics. The EU, while fairly successful, has a slew of problems to deal with, and remains an immature, experimental attempt at implementing the original vision. Any body capable of enforcing global law would fall victim to the same traps that cause problems for democratic national governments. Nobody is yet willing to create an entity that has no external competition to force it to correct its mistakes, so it will be a long time before we see globalization done right.
