Some poster's trauma drama, ain't like me
I'm doing things like trolling around on slashdot
so all you critics can just bite me
We need to get a story on Microsoft and take a bite out
cause on slashdot org I turn into a troll and post till the light's out
and now I got another server there goes my Redhat
Cryptography, kernels, microsoft, man I'll flame that
I love you Rob and everything, see I ain't the one to play clown
I read slashdot all day from work while my servers stay down
so just hear my side of the story don't try to fight it
moderate me up yo and don't you dare try to fight it
despite it, show slashdotters respect when I fall through
all you - do is troll me down when I post through
Me and Rob Malda Got a special thang goin on
You say it's trollin I say it's full grown
Hope that I feel this -- Feel this way forever
You can moderate me -- but you can't post anything better
Mrs. Malda
Ten times out of nine, most of my postings are fine
post a quickie on Microsoft you know I won't decline
King meets queen, post a trollific thing, together dream
about the story with that NASA thing
my postings zing, I hope I post on slashdot forever
Forever, forever, ever, forever, ever?
Forever never seems that long until you're grown
And notice that all my posts are all misread wrong
Mrs. Malda my intentions were good I wish I could
become a magician to abacadabra off the sadder
thoughts of me, thoughts of we, thoughts of he
askin what happened to all the postings Rob and me had
I pray so much about it need some knee pads
it happened for a reason one can't be mad
so know just know that everything is cool
I'm posting on a story while I read this from school with constipation

lest we forget
"The monopoly power of cable companies will be further unleashed. It will send shivers through broadcasting and independent content producers."
Many are forgetting it is we the people, who subscribe and pay for cable and there are alternatives to use instead of Time Warner, or any other cable company. e.g., A satellite dish will cost over time less than cable. Anyways, everyone is ranting over AOL and TimeWarner, while a smaller fish can cause just as much damage, AT7T and MediaOne. Where are the screams and outrage for this?

commercialization
ICANN's strength lies that it is not a commercialized entity, so its unlikely it can fall into some of the problems that plague other companies, monopolization, absurd rules, irrate Terms of Service, etc.
Sure many can be upset with ICANN, but as stated it is a non profit organization, so it makes due with whatever resources they have at their disposal. In comes company xyz with all the funding (think about these irrate issues such as Microsoft, Sprint's garbled Terms of Agreement, etc.), and you have to wonder if it really such a good idea.
As for the top two browsers, how many people DON'T use the top two browsers, why should they be forced to switch to another method of communications on the net to accomodate Idealab's idea?
Just my non important thoughts.

Fair shake
First off, is it me, or does viewing that site on my fbsd box with ns just suck?
"it's anybody's best guess. Therefore, if you use Linux and you agree to the terms and conditions of the GPL, you are-at least to some degree-placing a bet as to the implications of the code that you develop.
We've all seen this argument before, and whats surprising is their is the Open Source movement but not something of like an OpenCode movement, where developers would share code and allow others to better modify their (original programmer's) code which at times can produce better programs. Sure it hasn't been tested in court, and an argument for this would be, many GPL'd code was made on person's own spare time, perhaps as a hobby or pet project. Eitheir or, it would cost a lot for someone coding off of a pet project to rush into court to protect their GPL'd code, and not only that how does GPL based code fall into laws around the globe?
"Let's say you own a company that is building an Ethernet switch. Let's also say your value-add is software, and you have chosen to base your device on Linux. Can you imagine a court case some day that determines that all of the software you've developed falls under the GPL, and is now in the public domain? We fear this situation is impeding development in the embedded open-source arena."
Who really thinks this is an issue many of the big boys including IBM offer code which fall into the GPL that could be, and has likely been used by others as a basis for something better or more stable.
But if you write an embedded application and you link that code to Linux, is that code now subject to the terms and conditions of the GPL? That's what isn't clear."
He answers his own question here how can it not be clear. If he creates an RTOS embedded app linked to Linux, the original code is core, not Linux so why would it fall under GPL, thats sort of like saying Real just let go of their copyrights and patents since their audio/video player is now GPL in essence (at least from what I can muster)
I wish I could speak more but that Elton John, Eminem duo made me wanna puke, I like the original Stan, and the newest Rob Malda version

not fair
Well if Google plays into the Al Gore tune, and doesn't concede within an ample amount of time here's a nice list for someone to wget/snarf up old Usenet archives.
I wonder what if any, are the underlying factors for this move.

arbitration
I wonder what's going to happen when artists become like American sports figures and demand more money, what is Napster going to do then.
An easier solution for Napster would have been to somehow figure out a method to include artists who don't mind their music being shared, and create their own servers WITH the music allowed stored on them in which users could download songs which Napster would have the rights to.
Take a look at the contract 150mill for each label none of which is likely to go to any artist, now with this 250mill spread out to say 250 artist who would have allowed their music to be shared, they each would receive the fair value, leaving less room to complain about.
Under this new agreement (scheme), the only real winners are the record labels who are profiting not the artists who complained. So for Metallica, you just got shafted and your music will now be allowed whether you like it or not to be shared.
Chicks need Napster too -
A Bug's Life
So what they basically created is a microscopic cockroach to clean up the mess after a possible war. I wonder how many are needed to undertake this task, and does it mean that government officials can rest a bit easier thinking if a nuclear holocaust were to take place tomorrow, this bug will solve the problem?

As American as Apple Chowder
Initially, the school bureaucracy deferred to those who might have been uncomfortable. The morning after the censorship, Thielen met with the school's principal, a teacher and the director of elementary education. They told him they removed the exhibit because it might make students of color uncomfortable.
I've always felt uncomfortable with the way Americans fictionalize the story of Christopher Columbus, being a hero, doing so much for the country. HELLO. Christopher Columbus was a rapist and a murderer, yet school officials still teach such wonderful things about him.
In order to please the public people often try to hush the situation without having to address the problem. Sure it may have made someone feel uncomfortable, the story noted however the problem was with the children who may not have known how to differentiate between race, something they will not know because of people like the teachers whose fears may have misguided their actions by yanking the project. If you don't speak about it, hushing the problem will not solve it.
We have the same problem out here in New York with an art gallery titled "Yo Mama Last Supper" which depicts Jesus Christ as a naked black woman. Well the mayor says "Its foul and tax payers should not pay their tax dollars to have this shown" who the heck gave him the right to choose for me. We've had about 3 ticker tape parades for our sports teams and I surely didn't want my tax dollars wasted on that, so where was he at that time.
People only speak when its convenient at most, and until that mentality of "If you don't speak it, its not a problem" is broken we won't learn right from wrong. The parents of that little girl should sue to prove a point being her first amendment was broken.
No discrimination allowed -
artist programmer
I'm not a programmer but I would think the information is shared between the programmer of the game, and the artist. In order to know how to create a particular scene in a game, the artist will need to know how the game is to be played, while on the other hand, the programmer will need to know how the graphics are drawn in order to code the game.
Its almost a give the programmer is swamped in code so they wouldn't be able to focus on the graphics, and vice versa, so I'm thinking some gaming companies have created their own propietary software to allow both the artist and the programmers to interact with themselves regarding code, and art.

Flip side of coin
He basically says that Linus is ignoring the patches from the people working on the PPC side of the kernel
So Linus is holding off on a patch, big deal. Look how long it took 2.4 to come out, I don't buy that "Linus is holding out" comment. If Linus held out its probably because he's tied up with so many things and for the weight of the entire Linux project to be held on his shoulders is enough to make the typical person yank their hair out.
So if these patches are so detrimental to the advancement of it all, then why wait for Linus, code em yourself or have some other developers assist in the matter, a patch is not an OS and wouldn't require the amount of time as doing a complete kernel revsion so who does this guy think he's fooling. It seems to be more of an animosity based comment than one that would question Linus' integrity.

Has anyone taken claim to own this monument? What about when microprocessors are made from the same elements and the supply is greatly diminished, will someone come out of the woodwork and lay a stake in it all...
DeBeers, Mexico is calling.
Anyways ... Seems like a pretty neat touristy place, let's just hope they do get that air conditioning the speak of in place or that chihuahua in the Taco Bell commercials will end up a hot dog in no time.

Shark in guppies clothing
Carnivore can make unknowledgeable people think the government(s) is(are) out to get them which personally I don't think is the case for the majority of the time and hopefully officials have better things to do (hopefully) than sniffing through days/weeks/months worth of e-mail looking for that "one" discriminating message your sending. Takes time and a lot of effort including legal work that theoretically has to be taken when we regard the masses, however, there are also anonymous reports that some 'rogue` (should I dare say this) agents which may already be using this program (Carnivore) with or without warrant or justified means solely for the purpose of building circumstantial evidence for purposes such as bullying, or blackmail? This is of course provided sources are correct, or sources even exist ;)
Sure this goes into the skeptical sense of paranoia and the obvious conspiracy theory type situations, but realistically assessing the overall scenario, I would believe this to be likely I mean after all who is monitoring agents who are assigned to use this program at this time? Maybe there should be an outside monitoring committee to ensure ethics are followed.
If your the target of some investigation do not be fooled into thinking the F.B.I. will not go this far, its a dog eat dog world out there and anything goes.
Anyways enough of the BS corporate(ish) and conspiracy based stuff you should have also thought up by now.
The government did exactly what it wanted by now acknowledging some of their intents with Carnivore, however I would like to post this nifty little news before I'm moderated to troll which those who want to "fight" the power and retain your right to privacy, should look into:
Stephen Hsu and his partners at SafeWeb Inc. are hooking up with the notoriously intrusive Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA, in this case, wants to use a SafeWeb program to mask its own movements on the Internet, so it can gather information incognito. The technology is a piece of software called Triangle Boy that SafeWeb plans to post freely this month on the Web. Through its In-Q-Tel, the CIA is investing in a revved-up version of the software, which can bounce digital traffic around the Web anonymously, as well as rights to an equity stake in SafeWeb should the company go public. Others suggest more devious possibilities. Security experts say, an application like Triangle Boy, if scattered among hundreds of PCs, could be a way to cloak a multipronged 'cyber attack' on someone else's computer system. The CIA, along with the Pentagon, has worked for years to perfect ways to electronically meddle with other countries' banking systems or electricity grids, and Triangle Boy could allow them to do it without the target ever knowing who was behind the attack. 'It would be the functional equivalent of an electronic silencer,' says one technology expert with wide experience in the intelligence community. 'You could shoot electronic bullets right down the pipe without anyone knowing where they came from.' Intelligence officials deny they have any interest in using Triangle Boy for offensive attacks."
Here's my original article on Circumventing Carnivore. in its unabashed typo filled form (note: date was prior to the Spafford, Bellovin, etc,. thesis done with pretty much similar findings and I'm just a Joe Shmoe troller)

Double edged sword
Other companies, including Wang and Dell, have been found in violation of antitrust law for not disclosing patent applications, according to several sources and Hyundai legal papers. However, in many of these instances, the companies actively promoted their technology to some degree. By contrast, Rambus was relatively passive.
Either way you cut the cake Rambus does have the patents for it. Whether or not it chose to either negligently, or out of sheer stupidity the fact remains they have the patents. This sort of reminds me of the Swedish citizen who invented I think it was the mouse and never took a patent out on it out of feeling the need to not make it an issue. Well years later he went to do so and the general feeling towards him was "screw you!" Its a mad mad mad mad world we send packets through.

So how is this interesting news?!
First off would it matter what region they're in at this point in time, they're in space for crying out loud and no government can claim juridstiction over that.
Secondly who cares about which cypher of DVD's they're watching, their astronauts in outer space watching a movie. Who do you think they're going to fence a DVD to an alien?
I tried to post an article on the Genome scientists mapping out the code for 98% of the diseases affecting humans earlier and it got bumped for this? Holy shit what has /. come to?
Slashdot 2001 could it be true? -
obscure
Privacy concerns, and governments addresses over these concerns, are like water and oil. Current events should point out the true factors when thinking about these two, although many never take the time to delve deeper into the situation, often overlooking many important factors that would normally be an outrage after the occurance, but seldom questioned until it is too late.
Politicians are often older people who will never utilize computers in the same fashions as us, and often do not understand what is going on. Law enforcement often uses scare tactics by injecting some outrageous scenarios into the minds of these politicians using cryptic terms themselves in hoping these politicians will pass these laws without incident, which will benefit law enforcement, and cripple the people.
Breakdown of questionable issues:
HR46 was an attempt to sneak a fast one.
Carnivore was used dozens of times and the FBI claims it was mostly on hackers. Note: Its been found that the Carnivore snoops everything on a segment what about your traffic? Were you on that network, was your traffic snooped?
makes me wonder...
FBI claims Castro is a hacker. In a country where they have close to nothing, do you really believe Cuba is a threat to the US, or is this just an attempt to step on Cuba when their down?
Bin Laden using technology to hide activities. Note: this isn't new news and judging from experiences in history, we've always needed an enemy for the sake of remaining a super power by enforcing authority. So if Osama is such a huge threat why isn't he stopped cold? Because the government can't or because they don't want to for the purpose of having an enemy?
Take a quick look at some of the stuff posted by Louis Tenet this week and do some rational thinking about how situations arise which can be handled by government, but are often purposely misconstrued for the sake of promoting other hidden agendas. Government will try to take as much privacy away as they can, any government so don't be fooled.
And it goes on and on with no end in site.
shhh... the world is out to get me -
Censorship
The US is on a role to censor all that it can nowadays presenting the notion that things which are not under direct control of government are somehow threatening to the well being of the US.
The CIA posted a speech by Louis Tenet, their director about one of the threates facing the US' superpower status, which went like this:
Mr. Chairman, we are in a race with technology itself. We are creating relations with the private sector and academia to help us keep pace with ever-changing technology. Last year I established the Information Operations Center within CIA to bring together our best and brightest to ensure that we had a strategy for dealing with the cyber threat.
This is part of the same government the is getting its servers defaced every other month, and not because their clueless, but rather because they use these istances to push for more power and funding.
Along with partners in the Departments of Justice, Energy, and Defense we will work diligently to protect critical US information assets. Let me also say that we must view our space systems and capabilities as part of the same critical infrastructure that needs protection.
Speech can be found here
Here's a solution for this threat, DON'T POST CLASSIFIED MATERIALS ONLINE, which they don't so what exactly is this threat? Someone DDoS'ing a webserver? 15 years ago when they only had the SIPRNET amongst themselves this wasn't an issue, they still use SIPRNET but now its an issue?
Violence will always be violence and will always exist and whether video games, movies, music promotes it is never truly known, all we hear about are studies, and polls which claim this is the case, violence is fueled by games, music, etc. I never took any polls asking me questions, have you? Where are they getting their information from? has anyone took a quick look to think about this, who exactly is it thats answering these questions, and who gave them the right to decide for the majority of the people?
Lacking the control they would love to have, the government will attempt to control as much as they can while they'll turn around and their explanation will be "Its for your own good", well to be honest I'm more concerned about getting better funding for schools, building housing for those in need, drug rehabilitation vs. incarceration. Not for my tax dollars to be spent by political bigwigs chasing the people at Bonsai Kitten because they think its immoral. Why haven't they done anything to sites like Defacation Vacation which posts pictures of women getting raped, killed, etc? Surely a life of a human would supercede a kitten?
The same government is claiming that Cuba is our worse enemy, are you serious? Cuba? Give me a break Uncle Scam, Cuba is so crippled the only threat they could pose is if they stopped smuggling Cigars to those in Politics under the table.
We can't forget the Osama Bin Laden incident where he's using crypto and stenography. Whats next are they going to go after Spam Mimmic for jumbling up words?
anyways enough rambling I have better things to do
-
Mumbo Jumbo
If you signed a no disclosure agreement with the company the could turn around and say your offering priveledged information on a public place which could jeapordize their business.
Surely this is not likely the case, but companies are really leery about having anything negative said about them and will likely attempt to make it seem as if your somehow slandering them. This can be presented in court in a number of ways and most of the times a person does not have the resources as the company does to fight their case and voice their opinions.
Simplicity, use about 3 different proxies, a totally wacked out name, and have them waste resources proving their case. I've been bullied by some companies for the spoofs I pull on my site, and to be honest if someone asked me nicely to remove them I would. But when someone wants to be bullyish about it, I sit it out knowing it'll cost them more to be a pr#ck than to just be humane about the situation.

Stopping DDoS
I wrote a text from the administrative standpoint on how to pretty much eliminate 80% or so of an attack on a variety of hardware/software based level which can be found at my site.
Now as for the attacks themselves, this wasn't anything new as DDoS became popular after Mixter coded a scriptkiddiot tool, which allowed malicious users to actually implement these attacks on a ./script basis.
The foundations for DDoS though are a bit old and could have long been resolved had thorough network's been set up to deny any malicious activity to leave their networks and attack others.
Many admins have the knowledge to do so, but I think theyre resources are tied into making things work right then and there as opposed to doing it right.

Ironicy
The Pentagon's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization also is planning another attempt to shoot down a mock nuclear missile in space, probably in May or June, using the same technologies that produced a spectacular failure last July, the officials said. Two of the last three attempted missile intercepts failed.
Could it be officials here are disturbed because India could jeapordize the US' intentions of getting their Star Wars program back on the map?
The officials, speaking on condition they not be identified, said test preparations are going ahead in the absence of orders to the contrary from Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.
So Mr. Rumsfeld has himself denounced this but they are still going ahead with it.
Rumsfeld has been briefed in recent days by Ronald Kadish, the Air Force general who runs the missile defense project office.
Aside from the technical issues yet to be resolved, Russian and Chinese officials offered reminders Tuesday that whatever the design of a U.S. national missile defense, it will be controversial.
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi warned that American missile defense "will have a far-reaching and extensive negative impact on the global and regional strategic balance and stability."
In Moscow, Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev asserted that a U.S. missile defense could easily be defeated by technologies the former Soviet Union developed in the 1980s in response to President Reagan's Star Wars plan that was a more ambitious attempt to defend against all-out missile attacks.
"We had three mighty programs to asymmetrically counteract U.S. national missile defenses during Reagan's 'Star Wars,"' Sergeyev was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. He gave no details. Although the programs were halted, "We still have them and can take them up again," he said.
Just think about that for a second. Russia which has in reality little leadership, they'd have nothing to lose. See: Electro Magnetic Pulse. Russians have been using it for some time on a very low key basis.
At a European security conference in Germany last Saturday, Rumsfeld said President Bush intends to deploy a national missile defense. But first Rumsfeld is reviewing the status of the project the Bush administration inherited from the Clinton administration and is considering how to fulfill Bush's pledge to provide a missile shield that would cover not only the United States but also its allies.
This is a sham in order to make those who disapprove to think the US would actually give a rats ass in the event of a nuclear war. Its a way for politicians to waste tax dollars in order to get kickbacks. Old old old news.
I could go on but its redundant isn't it ;)
Oh well here are some hot chicks aren't you glad you read the whole thing through?

Maybe someone should create something like an "Organization for Computer Constultants", which members would pay say $30.00 (US) to be listed within a spam free database which those who have used their services can comment on those consultants.
I've seen people in the industry without a clue about their left from their right hands, and what it should come down to, is the person scouting for the person they hired being more thorough instead of just throwing money out of the window.
Within that database, consultants could also post about the companies they've done work for since it is also a two way street and if anyone hasn't noticed, the flurry of dot.com's which went DOA, have left many consultants in the dark with past due bills unpaid. So this topic shouldn't have been solely focused on rip off artists.
Had the recruiter had at least a substantial amount knowledge in the industry, I'm sure it'd be harder to be taken by a con. This again boils down to the company and their standards of procedures (which seem to be none.)

ethics
Ethical committees worldwide will argue against this, then those that do think its a good idea passing it will have enemies in the long run. Money talks as we all know and for those who are familiar or remember Pablo Escobar, the billionaire drug kingpin, as a scientist what would you say when he flashes a cold hard million bucks to have a clone of himself. If any remember he had paid millions to someone just to have plastic surgery to look like him.
Anyways aside from that I think you would have to have a big fscking ego to want a clone of yourself.
Think of the downfalls involved:
1) Your wife/girlfriend/ or husband/boyfriend will probably screw them to spite you afterwhich a court of law will decide [WHAT] in order to determine payment?
2) Your clone robs a bank while your a college grad and kills everyone in the bank. (your face, likely your prints)
Then the upsides:
1) Train your clone to be your slave. Work for you, go to school for you, etc., while you partay
2) Screw his girlfriend since you have the right, after all he is your clone.

I'm no scientist but I would say this would be a bad move for AMD. AMD has been doing an OK job on their own, creating creating chips. They have managed to keep out of the news unlike Intel who rumor has it, may be facing the same role as Microsoft with the Department of Justice.
As for Transmeta, they have their own niche in the market and should stick to their focus, many businesses with strong policies on their business models and focusing on those models do rather well, unlike others who try to carry the world on their shoulders such as Lucent who is getting slightly pounded, possibly from jumping into too many different segments and forgetting their core business model. (sounds correct although I am tired)
How significantly would AMD captive anything in the processor sector buy purchasing Transmeta? Not much, they should save the money for hard times and focus on their own stuff instead of trying to have their cake and eating someone else's.

So whats the big deal with this? Yahoo and Hotmail has a FreeBSD farm and my company uses FreeBSD to accomodate 60million users without flaws. I read a post below with someone bitching about the use of Linux and how it compares to the BSD's.
Linux still has ways to go and its surprising to see the great efforts of Slashdot running Linux based machines but personally I wouldn't use it for super high end stuff with a volumnious amount of users since it has its pitfalls.
Now to that same poster both FreeBSD and Linux suck when it comes to security as FreeBSD almost rivaled Microsoft in security advisories last year, and although OpenBSD is my OS of choice it does not have the support in hardware for most mega corporations' needs.
Solaris is a different story altogether which no one mentions good old Sol here. Although it is a bit bloated with uneccessary binaries there is no comparison for any Linux or BSD based server running Oracle versus a Solaris machine running Oracle its like comparing apples and oranges.
Why the posting of a FreeBSD based article when all this time I thought Slashdot had reformed itself to a Microsoft/Linux/Stupid Scientifical story based site with semi-weekly postings of stupid movies and stupid anime, not to be overshadowed by an assinine arsenal of other stupid articles the world just won't need.

Its all said and done before and not much is going to change. Instead of offering just horror stories with a quickie little link on who to contact, something most people will take a second look at if people were so concerned they would do much more about about such as mailing their local representative in office and complaining.
Sure we can waste our lives clicking away on slashdot stories something that can take a few minutes at time, but then many want to bitch about no one taking a stand when all it takes is a few minutes to send a quick email to congress and express your gripes. With enough concerns raised they will act on issues.
So your life has been slightly changed, well its your life so what are you going to do sit around an mope about it or take initiative and correct these issues. Credit companies are just companies a business just like any other and can be reported to places like the Better Business Beauru of other agencies. Contact them and have them remove your questioned info and go on with life. Unless laws are set in place it will continue, who will change those laws, people change those laws, and without any forseen problems by those in power to change them will leave them as is, bottom line.

Inabilities
Personally I've been on linuxes and bsd OS' for some time and sure Linux and BSD's kick MS tail up and down for security, networking, functionality, but there is too much inconsistancies within the OS' at this point for any one of them to overthrow Mickeyshit at this point.
Take for example the arguements on simple things like window managers. The Unixes don't have a set standard which is good to the geeky type but your typical 1-2 hour user does not really have a need for this. People love simplicity and things all purty and cutesy sort of like a nation built around Oprah and Martha Stewart, do you hnoest believe that Mary Jo Homemaker, or Billy Bob Hillbilly are gonna sit around and ./configure ; make ; make install or find /usr -name someshit* all day when some of these people have yet to understand that sleeping with their siblings is a crime and immoral?
Theres just too much for the average end user at this point which doesn't make it a viable solution, a lot of people just want ease of use point-click-do-this-for-me-cuz-im-illiterate OS' which aren't going to hurt their ego's which Linux can sometimes do to people even experienced users sometimes.
I use things*nix religiously and even at work I have to have a separate Wintrash system around to appease others who use Excel, Microcrash Word, Unpoweredpoint, etc.
Maybe Redhat and others should make like a separate offspring and call it Hicknix or Cluenix for e-taded users.

Could be viewed along with the arguements associated with PKI, just because a company is selling certificates why should one trust that company, are their servers secure from intrusion, just exactly who gave them that authority to sell certs, (government, god, allah, etc.) its all in open view; privacy buffs were opposed to it and I'm sure companies saw the problems down the road with allowing the database to be sold { else $PRIVACY_BUFFS_COMPLAIN >= $FUTURE_LOSES }
...
I'm sure if watchful eyes weren't kept it'd been sold.

Would make sense in order to keep clients' information safe and this is first time I've heard a corporation turning down more money. I remember NSI's and ICANN's bickering over the whois database and some might have said the issue revolved around the same means however it was not.
Personally I dont think this will set any standard and in the article it mentioned complaints by privacy groups which is the foundation for the decision to take legal action, only one would hope ethical questions would've outweighed a watchful eye, but hey money talks.
I wonder what will happen when some of the bigger fish go out like Doubleclick, Netcreations.com, etc, are there standards in place already set to avoid this from happening or is information just going to end up on the eBay selling block? What about with mergers and takeovers, will the same rules apply if the newer parent company doesn't have the rules the other company did?

Internet Life
What we need are content regulations that are roughly similar to those regarding obscenity and the exploitation of children in other media; and there should be individual-use regulations, perhaps even licensing requirements, for visiting some sites, such as the plethora of supposed "special interest" sites that thinly veil pedophiliac content.
Children have been exposed in other forms of media just as bad around the world in print and on television just as much as the net so I sensed somewhat of a grudge in certain pointers in this article. There is no way governments across the world would bind together to propose a solution together when they can't even sign a simple treaty to stop from killing themselves (Israel, Korea, etc,.) As for pedophilia it has been rampant much more prior to the internet and much is being done to prevent this on Interpol's, USCustom's behalf, and what a lot of people fail to understand regarding this situation is that many pedophiles are sneaky and adopt to technology just as well as everyone else. Recently in a discussion with someone I had to talk them out of rm -Rf'ing a pedo site they found and rooted simply because they could've been jeapordizing someone's investigation. The minute you take a ped site down it'll pop up on four other servers and I have seen this rampantly in third world countries where laws are obsolete and there may be criminal elements within government, e.g. Russiam Mobs, Japanese Yakuza, etc., so to think all government or any one government can police is ludicrous.
Convicted sex criminals and other questionable characters simply should not be allowed access to sites that make it easier for them to stalk and approach their prey -- not until they have demonstrated, through a licensing procedure, some sort of rehabilitation, and maybe not even then.
Yes and maybe we should give those who shoot licensing tests as well. What difference would it make on a criminal level, a criminal is a criminal and one should be more worried about some form of rehabilitation and counseling than how to screen their actions on the net. Wait maybe someone should create a commercial proxy/firewall server and dub it anti-child-porn and FORCE ex cons to use ISP's provided with them. As if they wouldn't find methods of circumvention.
This can be a private process, unlike proclaiming to whole neighborhoods that a sex offender has moved in (a law that, while arguably effective, raises troubling constitutional issues).
I sense future salesman here. Megans law does justice and serves it purpose well unfortunately its sad to see people who complain never visit the local police stations to find information on people in their neighborhood. So when something happens people cry foul when they never took the time to learn about their community. Sure the law fails many times and the laws were made by people.. Bottom line people fail.
People assume that what they read on the Net is true.
I don't know where these stats came from and I would hope many would look into situations but this is a vague statement.
There must be strenuous efforts first and foremost to guarantee that what is represented as fact is fact, and that what is not fact is clearly labeled as such. Right now I could put up a Web site concerning just about anything and say just about anything so long as I attached a disclaimer. But disclaimers can be so well hidden (sometimes even in the code of the site) that they amount to nothing.
Yes lets all go out and create disclaimers many won't take the time to read, sure it will be a great solution to someone who may have just got off welfare and off their ass to try to make something of themselves by working in a low key job, well lets just give them a disclaimer with those neat little tweak paragraphs that sometimes make little sense at times. Lets make that disclaimer sign their lives away. It won't work.
How about some information based crimes on a whole new level yall?

I think I have done the most spoofs for one site to date with everything ranging from Microsoft, FreeBSD, SourceForge, ABCNews, Redhat, Firestone, Napster, Slashdot, and a few more, I think people should exercise a bit of common sense before following the information contained on spoofed pages.
Now anyone can surely see any of the pages are made in good or bad taste depending on judgement, and many can say "They should have known better", should anyone have been technologically challenged to take anything serious, but people have to take into consideration that not everyone is a tech savvy /.'er and will often fall for these jokes and misguided info filled pages (Lord knows agencies like the FBI play off some judges who are non technically adept in an effort to get warrant issued.) I've had people who thought these were hacks I had done, I had those complain to me about their (spoofed sites) judgement to use offensive things, so its clear that some people are dolts.
Should someone have intent to make money, misguide (for financial gain), or other ill motive outside of just typical fun poking of a site using a spoof then there should be some form restitution they should have the pay and the content be removed.

Its the ass of the year. I'm glad to see idiots like you still exist it makes me glad to know that minoroties have come so far and ignorance such as yours can remind us when we forget this.
Maybe you should re-read your history and check where you came from since I'm almost sure somewhere down the line you were intermixed with some minority group like it or not.
You should humble yourself to life and get a grip on your anger. Even while this may be a joke and I sure as hell love to joke, you have issues. White, black, chinese, Indian, really wouldn't make a difference to me, I determine how, where my life goes and the choices which would allow me better opportunities in life, not some political based `illuminist' theory based group who's catapulting minorities to save face.
