History of Atari
A couple of days ago, I posted an article about The History of Atari on TQY3. It was'nt meant to directly compare the Atari Systems to modern day, but instead allow the reader to make thier own decisions on the future of gaming through historical education. Far from required reading, but if you were an Atari Child or have intrest in Atari's History, I'd Suggest giving it a peek.

See my posts here. I guess I should read more of the discussion before posting. If you know French, a great resource is at Workspace3D.ath.cx.

8290 + visor = net connection
Ive been using my nokia 8290 and my visor deluxe to connect to the net for the last few months. I dont need to use a serial cable because the visor and the phone connect via infared. So i can
/. on the go or do whatever..
Here is debian.org on my visor. Im using palmscape for browsing.
if you have a 8290 and a visor deluxe, somebody wrote a guide on howto get them to work together. -
Re:Appliances have always been in trouble....
The problem with netwinders is that they were overpriced, underpowered, and too loud (!) for the home hobbyist market.
Speaking of being loud, have a look at these fan modifications to make it quiet enough to leave on all the time.
There's also a good series of NetWinder internalspictures. It's a great little machine for hacking on.

Re:chrootFreeBSD extends the ideas behind chroot with it's jail functionality.
Using this, you could set up a virtual machine, similar to the way the Openroot Project does.

sopwith
i am currently writing a small 2d game (a clone of the classic dos game 'sopwith': here) and have decided to use SDL for it, mainly because of its portability. I have found that it is very simple to use. However, the main problem is that it provides only a very basic set of operations: for example, I had to write my own routines for flipping and rotating surfaces, which took time (and quite a bit of geometry). There are libraries which add features such as this but it seems tiresome to have to use a seperate library for basic flipping and rotating.

still slower...still slower than ns 4.x
it's slower to start a window, but page rendering tends to actually be faster than 4.7, with the notable exception of soros.ath.cx which is still faster on 4.7. Slashdot, on the other hand, renders faster in mozilla than ns47, when I hit one of those 500 comment articles, that I read in nested mode.

Re:that petition!
"Second, these aren't showstopper bugs; it isn't worth delaying Netscape another year for all the minor bugs that have been discovered. It hurts me to say this, but that's life with web browsers."
Want a preview of some what should be considered a showstopper ? There are some very bright and motivated people interested in the problem. But it does show some very deep internal problems with the mozilla code. If IE can do this page in 90 secs and mozilla chugs along to make it in 900.. then something is seriously wrong. There are a few others that trouble me much ... They can be corrected, and will, but when ?
My hat is off to the mozilla team, all its contributers and hackers alike, you've built a very solid browser, So Far.... now on to the 10% thats left. (well 15% :) -
nice example of mozilla rendering performance

Re:AOL Is Big, This is Interesting.Nope, not correct.
MP3Board is currently getting sued by the RIAA for copyright infringement by distributing MP3s. MP3Board has turned around and sued AOL because their subsidiary, Nullsoft created Gnutella. MP3Board wants AOL to share some of the liability for music piracy if MP3Board is found guilty. MP3Board's reasoning is that piracy wouldn't be happening as much if AOL's subsidiary hadn't created Gnutella.

some slashcode sitesI don't know of any other open-sourced sites (this is the point of your post). I don't think that website code is as likely to be under the GPL because it typically isn't distributed. If someone comes up with good code, the don't distribute it, they use it on their own website.
Anyone with a little perl knowledge can go a long way towards making a slashcode site into a customer support, file download, or of course a news and events website.
Anyways, here's the slashsites in case anyone is interested.

Re:The trade in novels
Check out this site:
http://chroot.ath.cx/fade/pro jects/palm/palmtext.html
which for better or for worse, has all five books of the hitchhiker trilogy in iSilo (reader software for palmpilot) and ascii format.
Hmm, tasty. Does anyone know of a program to convert from the iSilo format into something open that looks a bit nicer than plain text (HTML would be favourite)? Or failing that, a specification of the file format would be fine: I'd be happy to write the converter. After all, ``how hard can it be'', right?

The trade in novels
Also, although I'm not aware of it happening currently, how do you think you might react to discovering that some of your various novels were being traded online?
I think the trade in novels online was just waiting for a vessel to carry it, and with palm pilots now shipping with up to 8M of ram, the opening has presented itself. Check out this site:
http://chroot.ath.cx/fade/pro jects/palm/palmtext.html
which for better or for worse, has all five books of the hitchhiker trilogy in iSilo (reader software for palmpilot) and ascii format. I think it would be really great if DA could stick to his "more lenient side" and not take a hard line on things like this, they really are great for reading on the subway - but at very least, the site seems topical.
J.
PS - Without meaning to flame, bitch, or otherwise irritate people, I had expected... I dunno... more, from DA. Am I the only one who felt that the only questions that got more than three words were the ones promoting the movie or his website(s)? No disrespect intended, the man has 7 times the genius in his pinky that I have along my entire left side, but...shrug... I was expecting more. -
In the Beginning was Plain TextTo see how Neal really feels about Linux, Apple, BeOs, Windows, Unix, check out In the Beginning Was the Command Line, an essay that he wrote after Cryptonomicon.
The pain text version of this posted there is plainful. Go read the full HTML/CSS version here.

Re:Content Hosting QuestionSay I run a web server on my DSL line (which is true), and I do something like host a mirror of controversial material. Who is the service provider in this case, me or my ISP?
I am the service provider. Come and get me. The Associated Pricks can take the DMCA and shove it. Hey Elian! Wassup!
The DMCA must die. Now. Do not let them kill fair use!

The Unabomber ManifestoThat reminds me, I made an HTML copy of the Unabomber's manifesto way back when, and I still have it.
I can't say I agree with everything he says, but he raises some very good points about the human condition. It's worth at least a skim.

Re: In the Beginning Was the Command Line
In order to lessen the

Re:Question about Mozilla
i created a little script in my
/usr/bin/
directory called packmoz.
[root@co425570-a /root]# cat /usr/bin/packmoz
#!/bin/sh
cd /home/robert/src/package/ && ./mozilla
[root@co425570-a /root]# chmod +x packmoz
just change the cd command to whatever directory
you untarred it to..
you may want to use this icon for mozilla,
its more appropriate in my opinion
Mozilla Icon
