Re:perhaps they realize..
Let's not forget the modern faire of Etrian Odyssey and their hand drawn maps. So the genre is still alive. Though on that second installment they kinda twinked out a little.

Re:Obey your thirst...
Check out Odin Sphere (link goes to links to the trailer). That game is just beautiful.

Re:suggestions ...
I bought Etrian Odyssey about a year ago for the nintendo ds. You explore a labyrinth, drawing the map on the ds with your stylus. I think it's great- take a look:

Odin Sphere
My girlfriend and daughter beg me to play Odin Sphere every single day. I'd rather be programming, but invariably: "Lioooon, would you play Odin Sphere?"
It's a beautiful and gorgeous game. I highly recommend it to all story gamers (Final Fantasy and the like.) Also to puzzlers, because inventory management & alchemy (making potions) is pretty involving.
Yes, it's weird-- read the Penny Arcade comic on it. It's not actually as weird as they made it out to be, once you acclimate to it. But, yes: You grow plants made out of the souls of the people you've killed, and then turn them into salads at the Pooka village kitchen, thus leveling up your hit points.
I'm presently halfway through the Pooka prince's first set. (A little bit past that video, actually, is where I'm at.) -
Re:Big improvement on the way
Check out Etrian Odyssey on Nintendo DS:

Thought it's more or less a copy paste of Nethack atleast it should fit your bill nicely. Basic layout is similair as nethack, you have to draw your own maps, you can't just rush thru the levels, you can get more characters and swap people out in your team and so on during the game, so if 3 healers and 2 warriors is what you need at one lvl you can get that.
Graphics are very simple.
If only it was a MUD and playable over the Internet without friendcodes :)
I so want a basic 2D mud where I don't have to remember how to walk or read for directions all the time. Make it in JAVA or something similair aswell and I'm done =P -
*Ahem*

Re:$500 is a steal, why are people being so diffic
When I think about getting a game console, I'm only thinking about games.
I was in the lucky position of buying the PS3 as I was building my home entertainment system. In this capacity, I saved a metric ass-ton of money. The PS3 was so crazily cheap compared to the morass of equipment to provide its functionality that it wasn't even a contest. The PS3 is a bad deal right now, and I'm not sure it will recover past the point where it's actually worth it to have it AND my 360. And with no games I'm certainly not going to take that bet right now.
By this measure, the Wii is also a raw deal. Are you willing to go that route, or are you going to trust that Nintendo will suddenly flood the market with a lot more great games. Because their track record on non-handhelds hasn't been any good since like, the SNES. The backwards compatibility is not something that should be dismissed. A lot of really interesting games are still being released for the PS2 in addition to the fairly good (though very sparse) PS3 content. -
I knew it!I knew doing all of those fiddly hexagon puzzles would pay off, Angie! Secretary Anderson is depending on us!

It's all become true...
A few weeks ago, I was talking about Trauma Center for the Nintendo DS with a friend of mine. In the game, you play a doctor who operates on patients, removing tumors with your stylus, sewing them back up, etc. My friend's girlfriend is in med school currently and says that all the basic procedures are accurate enough, with the exception of one: a gel you apply to stop bleeding. I guess that's not true anymore.

Been there, done that....
I've been doing this for a while now. http://www.atlus.com/trauma_center/

Wiz get new life in Japan
Do you know that in Japan not only movie-filled FF-like RPG games are popular, but also Wizardry series are as popular as them and have cult fans? Why Wizardry got so many fans in Japan is I think because those versions released in Japan for PC and NES are with beautiful monster graphics... though old fans prefer wireframes. There are even Japanese-original Wiz scenarios. For GameBoy there were 5 or 6 Wiz titles, and some others were released for SuperNES, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and Windows PC. They are based on old-style, no spaceships involved, swords/sorcery background as original scenario 1-5. Only new classes and races are introduced, without losing balance. And now, original Wizardry world ceased at 8, while Japanese studio Atlus released new Wizardry title "Busin" for PS2 in Japan, called "Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land" http://www.atlus.com/Wizardry.htm outside Japan.

Re:Why is Napster at fault?Ok, I've never used Napster but I'm wondering what it is exactly. Is it just a method of trading MP3s or is it a central server with an administrator function. I mean, there are free MP3s out there that are legitimately free, I downloaded one just yesterday:
Perhaps all Napster would need to comply with the law is to spot check the Mp3s on their server and remove ones which are illegal? Would that make them more like Freshmeat?
I mean is Napster a product or more of a server, like Freshmeat? I think servers can be held responsible if they hold pirated content. On the other hand if Napster is just a tool that allows an individual to set up her own MP3 server, then I don't think they should be prosecutable for that (but the people running the servers could be).
