Re:Oh kid. Don't even try.
You're dreaming buddy. Software on Linux for audio mixing doesn't even support channel mixing WTF the last time I looked.
Audacity does support channel mixing.
Also people like Microsoft Office.
And? No unix has to emulate Windows or it's software to be useful. If you can't adapt to new technologies you'll be quickly thrown into the unemployment line once you get past a certain age in modern society. That's true regardless of what OS or device you use.
Everyone who needs to get work down buys a PC with Windows. End of discussion. Unix lost in the 1980s sorry.
Good to see your fanboyism is alive and well 40 years later. You might want to try looking around again. Assuming you can follow instructions and ask for help when needed that is.

Audacity v Ardour
By the look of it, https://ardour.org/ is a full multi track recordiing studio while http://www.audacityteam.org/ is a simple wave file editor. There is no comparrison. It is like comparing Photoshop to Paint. Audacity should have given up years ago, especially considering their bar was set so low. It only ever barely worked on OSX.

Re:Any timeline on the compromise?
I couldn't find any information on _when_ this was likely to have happened.
According to the Audacity project, the malware was being served "For about 3 hours on August 2nd 2016". See

I'm not sure about doing it live, but...
I use avidemux and audacity to add Rifftrax to movies. Basically copying out the existing audio, merging the rifftrack with the movie audio in to one track and then putting it back in as a separate audio track so the original audio is there too if you want to watch the movie without jokes (pretty rare for me actually, but it's nice to have options
;)).Someone else already suggested OBS, I've used that too for recording gaming video. It can be pretty intensive and it takes some fiddling to make it workable but it's not bad.

Re:Best way to force an upgradeOff-tpoic, but...
The track marking is what Audacity lacks (AFAIK, maybe it can but I haven't found it).
Just a heads-up, in case you've found EAC's 44.1kHz limitation less than ideal: You can totally split a recording into tracks with Audacity. You might enjoy the ability to record at the highest rate your audio hardware supports, process out pops, clicks, and hiss, and fade in/out any remaining noise from the silence between tracks before downsampling to 44.1/16/2 and burning to CD.

Re:What To Keep, What To Pitch
2010 seems to be crippleware, although I suspect it is unintentional. 2008 is fine.
Audacity officially uses 2008 still, because it won't build on 2010. But it does reference bugs (just the word bugs so I'm not sure which ones).
The wikipedia article is pretty good for listing the differences. Definitely crippleware in your sense of the word, but entirely functional. Most of the features are not used in daily life.

Re:A Few Typos, But The Heart and Core Is There...
While I actually do use Audacity for long recordings it's not very good for that purpose.
The reason is if "stuff happens" (power failure, crash etc) during a recording, you actually have to go through a recovery process for the ENTIRE recording - older versions of Audacity were even worse (see: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/CrashRecovery depending on the sort of recording you were doing the recovery may not be 100%).
Saner recording software would write stuff to disk in a manner where you'd at most lose the last few seconds of the recording.
I still use Audacity because I'm a cheap bastard
:).p.s. Some older versions of Audacity 1.3 actually had problems with long recordings (at around the 2 hour mark), I had to go back to 1.2 till that was fixed... So code quality and design might not be very good.

Noise Removal - Audacity Wiki:

Open source software on eBay
I work on the Audacity sound editor, a free software project that is being re-branded and sold on eBay under names like LuxuriousitySound. Most of the sellers try to conceal the app's identity, and of course they don't mention that it's free and open-source. The same vendors are also selling rebranded versions of Open Office and GIMP. We get a lot of messages from angry users who find out that they payed $15 for software that's free for everybody.
The vendors are obeying the GPL, so they aren't guilty of copyright infringement. They're careful not to use the software's real name, so of course they aren't guilty of misusing our trademarks. They might be in violation of deceptive advertising laws, or eBay's own "Brand Name Misuse Policy," but eBay hasn't yet acted on any of the buyers' complaints.

Re:Yes, it is smaller and better
Here's yet another data point. AudacityTeam.org gets 3,000 page views a day. Over 75% of Audacity downloads are for the Windows version. And yet, in terms of browser share:
MSIE 44%
Mozilla 26%
Netscape (compatible) 20%
Opera 3%
Other 7%
(Too bad my web hoster doesn't keep stats on KHTML/Safari in particular...)
Also check out the Google Zeitgeist - while they don't actually show any numbers for browser share, by carefully analyzing the image in a paint program, I would estimate that their numbers are:
MSIE 76% (6.0 - 49%, 5.5 - 10%, 5.0 - 13%, 4.0 - 5%)
Mozilla/Netscape 12% (Mozilla/NS6+ - 7%, Netscape 4.x - 5%)
Other 9%
The graph definitely shows Mozilla growing steadily, though not nearly as fast as IE6 is taking over previous versions of IE. -
Re:Hopefully studio costs going down
Hi Dominic, not trolling, but impressed that you replied. My Mac came with this program, and it's very cool. I believe it's only free if bundled with the mac, it seems to be shareware, and I like it better than Audacity.
Well, I guess we've got a long way to go! If you think that Audacity has any hope, I'd encourage you to visit our feature request page and suggest the particular features you want.
By the way, my sister is in college and they're teaching audio recording 101 with....Audacity. Congratulations, I think that's very noteworthy. I didn't mean to put your efforts down in my post.
Very cool. No offense taken. There's no way that Audacity can be everything to everyone. But we're working very hard to make it as good as possible. -
Re:OSS is NOT about 'spare time' developers
Nor is it as simple as that. Without COMMERCIAL software companies contributing to apps and kernels (while charging "too much" for some things), OSS would not be advancing as fast as it is.
There are a lot of PAID contributors who work on The GIMP, other Open Source apps (MySQL and PostreSQL spring to mind) and the Linux Kernel itself, for that matter.
That's true, but for every paid developer, there are often dozens of part-time volunteers who have made very significant contributions.
Audacity does not have any paid developers, though we have many volunteers who would love to get paid to work on Audacity if anyone wanted to sponsor us! -
Re:Finally
From the wiki page:
...
Maybe it's just me, but where's the frickin' download link?
The Audacity homepage is http://audacity.sourceforge.net. There are nice, big, download links there.
The Audacity Wiki is a community-maintained site for organizing information and resources relating to Audacity. It's publicly editable, so if you want to put download links there, you're welcome to do so! -
Re:this is good for OSS
Well, just had a look at the "new" audacity. I don't find it so innovative ; indeed, I was expecting for many features which were not included here. Some are pretty simple ; for example, I would like the FFT filter to have a "log scale" option, which would make it much more interesting and usable.
This is available with the Equalizer effect. I agree, it's a little confusing. These effects will be merged in a future version.
Please add your other ideas to the Audacity Feature Requests page!

Wiki ClickPop entryWiki ClickPop entry
The compression effect works nicely for removing clicks and pops from recordings (don't apply post compression gain for this!); the low pass filter is easier sometimes or you may need the pencil; use the magnifer (on the control toolbar) to magnify on one pop for selection.

Finally
Anyone interested in Audacity should pay their Audacity Wiki! homepage a visit. Audacity is open source, cross platform and it actually works. If you haven't tried it yet, now is the time.
