One domain per household
With the increasing number of people switching to broadband, and the availability of personal servers like The Net-Box, obtaining and using a domain for one's home is not only easy and affordable but also reasonable. I believe that a big share of the domain registrations is for home/personal use and that the numbers will continue to increase.

A potential boost for the SOHO server market.
Once people switch to broadband, they become capable of launching servers of their own which is in one way making more use of their bandwidth and in another way a step towards freeing their digital data like email accounts, photo albums and webpages from outside and gathering it all inside their own house and taking control of them. With the constantly dropping price of Personal Servers such as the Axentra Net-Box, way below the affordable price range for home appliances as well as the easy maintenance and the vast feature set offered by such products there will be a second wave following this migration and that is the wave of people considering a server to go with their high speed connection. It seems that Personal Servers are looking more and more like something that can fit into the basic set of home appliances just like how a high speed connection is becoming a need in parallel to one's electricity and phone line subscription and that means there is a HUGE potential market for these products.

Personal servers the next step?
From the original story:
"...Open Source software is leading to digital devices being used in large volumes in ways their designers never envisioned. This takes control of the network out of the hands of the providers and into the hands of the users."
I believe, the next step is to free the users from providers whom store their personal data and even serve their e-mail and that's already happening. With products like The Net-Box it is now possible to have your own email, file, calendar, bookmark server in your own home without worrying about free-service policies changing that will restrict the way you access your own data.As a matter of fact Axentra the creator of the Net-Box is in Canada and uses Open Source as well! -

Axentra Series Servers
Try the Axentra Home Series servers http://www.axentra.com/
They H-50 uses a VIA C3 800 MHz processor which is low power. I actually like the setup and configuration options. Also, the e-mail system is great.

What I'd like...Tillie's treat.
Then this company should have gotten more of a nod then.
They're even getting into the small server market.

A server? Why don't you try an Axentra box?
I bought an Axentra box 2 months ago and I never had any problem with it. A real KISS box. And now, they just introduce three new models with AMD chips (www.axentra.com). It's not rackmount, but it's small, and it works.

Homebase Anywhere
I have been using the Homebase Anywhere service from Axentra Corporation. They provide IMAP and webmail, 100 megs of web and storage space and your own portal page with webdav access. Photo albums are automatically generated by uploading photos and description files to your "Photos" directory. Other features include compatibility with Mozilla calendar, an LDAP capable address book, and an online web page generator. There is a free 60 day trial. Axentra also sells the Rumba Multifunction Server Appliance, which is a mini-ITX and Linux based internet gateway server which has all of the features of Homebase Anywhere.

Sounded good, until I visited the URL.
this does not represent me. I'm nowhere near none of these people. Thus if the product is addressed to them, I find this highly insulting.
What's next? A granpa next to a hexadecimal keyboard? Granma talking happily on the cell phone and hacking her 680040 microprocessor? Toothless asian kid hacking low-level RS232 drivers and looking excited?
