    Anyway, I'm a little worried about the methodology. If you train on PG, and test on PG your generalization error will suffer. This is especially easy to get wrong when both the train and test set are constructed repeatedly with various thresholding rules, and the classifier features are (presumably) optimized during the research being conducted.

    Like a thousand other financial instruments, the people making money are the ones that got in front of the herd.

    On the other hand, if you send me $25, I'll teach you my sure-fire method for picking horses in parimutuel races. I make $800 a day and I just bought a new Corvette!

    I'm not joking (well, I am about the Corvette, but not about the horses). I can teach you how to bet horses, and while you might not get rich, you will almost certainly be more able to limit your losses than you will on Bitcoins at > $1000 a pop.

    Remember, at the end of the 80's early 90's everyone thought Japan was going to overtake the US, and look where they are now; they haven't recovered yet from their market collapse 20 years ago.

    This graph plots the GDP per capita of the USA, the UK, Japan, India and China. You can see what happened to Japan there: they rose rapidly until they roughly caught up with the USA and UK (and other developed countries) in terms of GDP, and then settled in to grow at the same pace as them. This seems pretty reasonable - it is easier to catch up than to lead, since one can benefit from already existing technology and from being cheaper labor-wise (like you point out). It seems reasonable that the same will happen to China. It is currently rising rapidly, just like Japan did, but I expect it to join the rest of the developed countries in their slower growth once it catches up, in the relatively near future (15 years perhaps?).

    But all that is about per capita numbers. If China follows the same pattern as Japan, and slows down once its GDP per capita approaches that of the US, then it will still have a total GDP 2-4 times larger than the US. So I think pointing to Japan when arguing that China's economy won't dwarf that of the USA doesn't really work. To avoid that happening, China has to do much worse than Japan, relatively speaking.

    It was considered scandalous if a newspaper reported something that wasn't factual. Prestige newspapers still won't print anything that wasn't verified, and then work hard to regain their credibility when they find out one of their staff falsified the report. The reputation of the paper is valuable and affect subscriptions. Compare that to blogs that appear and disappear constantly with very little credibility to lose in the first place, or with services like buzzfeed that are geared towards click-bait and not actual news.

    The Author of Bipolar Advantage. I've seen him talk 2X and he's one of the few that really is onto something useful.

      Tom's bipolar himself and has learned to manage it and continue as an author. He's invented a whole new approach to this stuff. I had to attend 2 of his free lectures, to really "get it". He's not selling a seminar, but truly trying to change the delivery of care.
    Basically, the current mental healthcare system to strive for the unrealistic goal that they admit doesn't work! Just medicate people into some kind of "even keel" state and hope they're going to stay that way.

    If you can watch a few minutes of this presentation . or read a bit of his books, I never finished one, but got a lot out of a l ittle exposure to this guy. (I've been diagnosed bipolar, btw)

    The journal Food and Chemical Toxicology could retract the article Gilles Eric Séralini on NK603 maize and the Roundup, published in September 2012. This reopens the debate on the assessment of long-term risks of GMO plants.

    During an emergency press conference in the European Parliament this Thursday, November 27 [GMW: should be 28], Gilles Eric Séralini, the author of the controversial study on the long-term risks of maize NK 603 and its associated herbicide, denounced the withdrawal by the journal of his article revealing the results of this study. Originally released in September 2012, this article was pointing to the toxicity to rats of transgenic maize NK603 and its associated herbicide, Roundup, both produced by Monsanto.

    On Tuesday, November 26, the scientist received a letter signed by the chief editor of the magazine, asking him to withdraw his article. The reason? "No fraud or manipulation of data" were detected by the reviewers, but "the results presented are inconclusive and therefore do not reach the threshold of the publication".

    Yet, says Professor Séralini, many exchanges took place before publication of his article, over several months. The editor recognizes that "the problem of the low number of animals had been identified during the initial peer-review process" but the article "still had merit despite its limitations". It was published, sparking intense controversy and heated debate between advocates and detractors. The scientific quality was the focus of discussions.

    The journal gave in to pressure?

    Why this reversal today? Due to pressure from industry, denounced in turn Joël Spiroux, President of Criigen (Committee for Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering); Corinne Lepage MEP; Paul Deheuvels, statistician member of the Academy of Sciences; and François Veillerette, President of Future Generations, who all came in support of the researcher. For Gilles-Eric Séralini, the demand addressed to him was related to "the arrival on FCT's editorial board of Richard Goodman, a biologist who worked for several years at Monsanto," between 1997 and 2004.

    The scientist scans the arguments of the publisher. The strain and the number of rats used in the two-year study are insufficient? Yet these are the same rats used by Monsanto to prove the safety of its products, Séralini replies. He goes even further, stating that an article presenting the results of a study demonstrating the safety of Monsanto NK603 were published in 2004 by the magazine, while the data of the study are "fraudulent", since the reference groups [ie control groups] are fed with seeds contaminated by GMOs and pesticides," he says.

    The statistician Paul Deheuvels says that he is surprised "that on the one hand this study is rejected, while the criticisms that are made could be made to the original study of Monsanto since Séralini copied the structure of this experiment". This member of the Academy of Sciences [Deheuvels] announced the publication, by the end of the year, of an article demolishing point by point the criticisms leveled at the team of Professor Séralini. For him, this study is "truly innovative. The data are very significant. This is a pilot study which must be confirmed or refuted. But given the significance of the data, I doubt it will be overturned."

    Reality is the name given to an abstraction by agents belonging to that same level of abstraction. Simulation is what has one more level of abstraction. The creator hypothetically resides in one less level of abstraction.

    I like that you mentioned Conway's Game of Life. I really like it as an anology.

    So forgetting 'god' questions & w/e for a minute...

    I was trying to think of a way to go 'one abstractin layer down' as a sort of heuristic for programing a machine to make random choices, in an autonomous independent agent kind of scenario.

    So assuming humans make choices in 3 dimensions (no reason whatsoever to think this way but hear me out...)...to go 'one abstraction layer down' is 2 dimensions

    To me that sounds alot like Conway's Game of Life.

    The idea is, say we're making a Sim's type game. Human avatars (to continue your analogy) and I want to **program** my avatar to make truly random choices (from my programmer's perspective) but have them function within a system that also is programmed to maintain the avatar character (keep them fed, make them wipe their ass, etc)...so this Sim's automaton can sustain their existence but no other user would ever be able to predict their behavior beyond the basics for any character.

    I'm trying to program that let's say...

    Using my 3d>2d heuristic, I would have to have a 'sub-martingale game' running underneath my Sim's character's existince.

    This 2d game IMHO would look alot like Conway's simulation...precisely b/c of what you said above, it is binary ("is about cells being empty or full, nothing more, nothing less...")

    In this 2d game, for each decision is either 'do or not'...each cell can be filled or empty...binary. In the 3d game, when the Avatar geospacially reaches some sort of decision node (player finds a bike...ride bike or do not ride bike)

    In the 2d sub-game that would look something like two gliders interacting in a conway game. When they interact, they can, theoretically reconfigure to form a gosper gun, or a bigger glider, or obliterate each other...these interactions could (theoretically) be used to guide the 'choices' of avatar

    ex: the autonomous avatar is represented in 2d by a two antithetical gliders that also function as a gosper gun that shoots crawlers. so here is this sort of mobile Conway yin/yang glider that moves in the 2d space in some relation to the 3d avatar

    when the 3d avatar encounters some decision node in the game, that is represented in 2d by some kind of interaction with the 2d yin/yang glider and something else that can make the 2d yin/yang glider shoot out new gliders in a new direction...or make a fountain...something...

    is any of this making sense? what do you think man?

    Still, you can get a better trade in deal from other places like this. Search around, there are a lot of places that will take old phones either for cash or credit towards a new phone (if you opt for credit, you tend to get "more" out of it).

It says right there that the students who multi-tasked while taking notes did worse and that some of the participants didn't even adhere to the instructions for their group, i.e., they surfed and screwed around when they weren't supposed to. And then did poorly on a quiz. Gee, who saw that coming?

    Why is it that we believe that we can multi-task? In regards to work, humans cannot do true multi-tasking. We are either concentrating on performing one task or are are task switching by concentrating on multiple tasks in much smaller time slices. People are lauded for being multi-taskers, but the end result is that they end up doing more than one thing poorly, as we see in the study results.
