Re:Doing better than Intel
Stop lying. Almost everything newer than Core 2 Duo is already patched on Intel side.
Not only is that not true, but Intel has announced that it never will be true.

Re:Vigilante ? More like the NSA.
Hence the Russians getting so annoyed when the US wants to put one of its hackers on trial.

Even if true...
Invulnerabilities of the Security Processor had been reported to AMD last year by researchers from Google. Apparently AMD found a workaround by letting people disable the entire PSP. Considering that both the "Masterkey" and "Ryzenfall" vulnerability groups allegedly depend on exploiting the PSP, these problems already appear to be fixed by AMD, somewhat.
So if someone with a Ryzen is concerned there's something they can do about it. Source: https://www.bleepingcomputer.c... -

Hack or Sabotage
Sounds to me like someone has it in for Alexa.
It's either a hack, or someone wrote this into the code intentionally. Probably before they got fired/laid off/downsized, etc.
If it's truly a hack, I can't wait for it to hit other devices and platforms.
Like, say Cortana, perhaps.
Not that Windows 10 is doing anything creepy, all by itself in the middle of the night.
https://answers.microsoft.com/...
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...Oh, wait. Maybe, it's just auto updating, and wiping out your preferences and resetting your privacy settings when you're not looking...
https://answers.microsoft.com/...That, or maybe the evil little AI is simply laughing in its sleep at what it will do to us next.
I guess we'll all see eventually.

Arth1: This botnet isn't DGA or fastflux
See subject (you lose in your theoretical bs too) 0.0.0.0 1f873bb2fed1.hostname.com & 0.0.0.0 2953bfe64711.hostname.com = blocked (up to whatever via DGA tracker lists have changing a source in my APKIniFile.ini (change back once loaded & blocked))
I don't need wildcards!
Hosts = lighter + less security issues vs. DNS & addons using wildcards or 'souled-out' to NOT WORK like adblock!
Keep moving goalposts!
DNS, routers (both loaded w/ security issues hosts don't have by 100's), DNSMasq PiHole (bug in it https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/security-bugs-in-dnsmasq-affect-computers-smartphones-routers-iot-devices/ ), proxies (privoxy works w/ hosts & I dust you on it 3++ yrs. ago https://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=6395793&cid=48601533/ & you tried "moving goalposts" to EXTERNAL proxies there too!

Re:Does Thunderbird still matter?
It was posted yesterday. Mozilla is going to revamp it with Photon stuff, including the removal of legacy extension support.
I think this is a bad idea. Most Thunderbird addons do more to modify the UI and behavior of the application where few are touching the content.

Routers = security issues & eat power/cost "$"
See subject & there is NO DENYING it! We've all seen near monthy bugs or security issues in routers/modems for years now here & a GOOD router costs money in unit cost + added power bill cost!
* Can a home modem or consumer router store e.g. 100mb of blocking data (hosts data = even vs. DNS data rules tables by far per line (even w/ wildcarding as each line demands tons more text in DNS rules))?
Doubt it.
IF it's "so bad" then WHY's BLEEPING COMPUTER + many other security pros I have that say so say hosts are good for blocking cryptominers like this "use this classic Windows hosts trick to block the Coinhive or Crypto-Loot domains at the OS level" https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/a-new-player-joins-coinhive-on-the-browser-cryptojacking-scene/ , hmmm?

Randomly generated or not, once a hostname is blocked in hosts, it's blocked & I've even shown Tepples there are DGA lists (where names are generated thus) & I use them - so much for that bs from you.
IF a domain is compromised, "good" or not? I will block it - you can easily do so too OR NOT, up to you.
Depends on the proxy used - Proximitron can use & work with hosts files.
By default hosts ARE THE 1st RESOLVER (unless you use the faulty with large hosts files LOCAL usermode slower dnscache client service which is even MORE BUGGY on Windows 10 https://www.bishopfox.com/blog/2017/10/a-bug-has-no-name-multiple-heap-buffer-overflows-in-the-windows-dns-client/

Re:No Security
Security.txt is basically howtospamme.txt
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...
You could just as easily have a Contacting Us page. Make sure your email address doesn't appear in an un-obfuscated form in it so it can't be harvested. E.g. for javascript build it up from a few fragments, for noscript change the @ and . characters into an image.
security.txt is dumb because it includes your email address and phone number in form that is very easy for a script to grab.
Google doesn't have one, but then Google doesn't employ anyone the public can contact anyway
https://www.google.com/securit...
Neither does slashdot, but then slashdot doesn't employ anything than can pass a Turing Test.
-
There's several manual steps to getting it working
Are the best instructions I found. Also, you'll have to open port 22 in since the installer doesn't open it even if you use Microsoft's own firewall.
Any idea when this is coming to Server 2016?

Things, nearing end of their existence...
I'm typing this in Safari. I grown up using Netscape (starting back in 1998) - and I loved browsing with it, I was an early adopter of Mozilla suite and Phoenix browsers, I stayed with Firefox for many years but I cannot take it anymore. PaleMoon fork had a promise, but half of the sites I visit refuse to work in it (same with SeaMonkey suite), Waterfox is the same bloated and slow hog as the modern Firefox. This particular story is the last drop for me:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c... , which means they must be on their last legs, if they have to resort to lowly spamming of their own remaining users.
I used to heavily use Opera in late 90-s and early 00-s as well (in addition to Netscape), and I still have its last Presto version 12.18 installed here and there.
Safari (with uBlock) under macOS, Vivaldi and (Presto-based) Opera under MS Win and anything, but Mozilla, under GNU/Linux (including Lynx and Links for reading news) for me from now on.
Good-bye Mozilla, you've turned into self-professed, unusable monster. -
HereCometheBRICs
The BRIC nations (Russia, Brazil, China, India & South Africa) are building their own backup global DNS system.
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...
My guess is that it's on track sooner than expected and it's likely more than the purported "backup". Especially with asshat, cabal owned, Pai killing Net Neutrality today, nobody trusts the US, nor should they. The routing should be taken as a precursor. -
I got a Mac instead of a Win10 laptop
Still, I've got to admit MS are doing a pretty decent job on security at the moment. This hole is already patched and the KRACK vulnerability was patched before it was made public
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...
Pretty sneaky, Microsoft. While some vendors were scrambling to release updates to fix the KRACK Attack vulnerability released today, Microsoft, quietly snuck the fix into last week's Patch Tuesday.
While Windows users were dutifully installing October 10th's Patch Tuesday security updates, little did they know they were also installing a fix for the KRACK vulnerability that was not publicly disclosed until today. This fix was installed via a cumulative update that included over 25 other updates, but didn't provide any useful info until you visited the associated knowledge basic article.
Even if you were bored enough to actually click on the More info button, you would have had to be REALLY bored to even spot a reference to a vague mention of a wireless security update in the last bullet item of the knowledge base article.

See subject (even when it's off OR location services off) & https://yro.slashdot.org/story/17/11/21/1351225/google-collects-android-users-locations-even-when-location-services-are-disabled/ & 3/4 of the apps on it do too https://tech.slashdot.org/story/17/11/29/008247/three-quarters-of-android-apps-track-users-with-third-party-tools-says-study/
... AND that's ONLY THE TRACKING (the infection by malware is the rest & I could post 100's of examples of it!)I don't think YOU need that info. though - you're pretty well informed (except on how DNSMasq has been carrying HUGE BUGS https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/security-bugs-in-dnsmasq-affect-computers-smartphones-routers-iot-devices// that's still not patched afaik discovered Oct 3rd 2017 that's in Pi-Hole you suggested).
* Tepples - honestly? Why do you THINK they're not rootable?? To help 'secure you'???
Bullshit!
Apple + Google want you to be TRACKABLE SURVEILLABLE sheep!

Re:The more you tighten your grip...
VPNs, encryption, Tor,
Are all already banned in Russia. ISPs are madated by law to prevent the use of Tor/proxies/VPNs because they can be used to access 'extremist material'.
It's really descriptive of just how totalitarian the country has become that they're hard at work at out-Chinaing China itself when it comes to the control of the internet.
This is not to say there won't be those who still have access to Tor and VPNs, especially to those who're friends of the right people, but for the common folk this makes it really hard.

HUGE PiHole/DNSMasq bug Oct 3rd discovered
See subject & so much for Pi-Hole/DNSMasq being safe (discovered in late Sept. & still unpatched afaik) https://www.bleepingcomputer.c... [bleepingcomputer.com]
* Stack & heap "buffer" overflows galore, bypasses of ASLR, memory leaks (lacks free for malloc/needs delinting), Boundary checks needed & bug collision.
PiHole also means spending on a raspberry Pi unit (vs. hosts = native & free) + running TONS of moving parts (of which may also have exploitability & inefficiency - complexity IS the enemy of security + efficiency).
* LASTLY - Someone SURE DIDN'T LIKE THIS BAD NEWS for Pi-Hole users having to TRY to effetely "downmod hide it" last time I posted it, lol -> https://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=11381875&cid=55596087/

FPI add-on is poorly designed
The add-on, First Party Isolation, linked from the article, to
https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...
is something of a turd. There is no indication that it is doing anything. The preference page has no controls. The icon that is placed in the menu bar shows no state information—supposedly if you click on it, the FPI feature will be disabled for five minutes. There is absolutely no indication that anything happens when you click on it. plus, the icon is so hard to see that at first I thought there was no icon at all. The linked article mentions that you can also edit two entries in the about:config page. Nice if a little obscure. But you might think that the add-on would simply toggle these items, but installing the add-on does not affect these about:config items. So, again, the FPI add-on is poorly designed.

Already answered (I'd do as recommended)
Pros recommend hosts for blocking out domains doing crypto mining and what they talk to/from with "use this classic Windows hosts trick to block the Coinhive or Crypto-Loot domains at the OS level" - https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/a-new-player-joins-coinhive-on-the-browser-cryptojacking-scene/ BLEEPING COMPUTER
&
"best option right now is to block known Bitcoin mining domains. One of the better options to do that is to add these to the hosts file of the operating system so that these domains redirect to localhost" https://www.ghacks.net/2017/09/22/how-to-block-bitcoin-mining-in-your-browser/ Martin Brinkman - GHacks
* Any site serving it directly STILL TALKS TO THE BITCOIN MINING SERVERS but again as I said before I'd block that site right off totally & never visit it again as there is always a substitute alternate one doing the same basic thing.
APK
P.S.=> See subject... apk

I made the best way you already have... apk

APK
P.S.=> Accept NO substitute for more speed, security, reliability & anonymity online that does FAR more for FAR less vs. other "so-called 'solutions'", natively w/ what you already have in a hosts file - NO other SINGLE competitor does as much (& competitors many times more complex + exploitable also)... apk

Then why are 'pros' suggesting hosts for?
See subject: I can block whatever they talk back to (this defeats them & HOSTS ARE SUGGESTED AS A DEFENSIVE MEASURE by pros ala:
"the best option right now is to block known Bitcoin mining domains. Hmmm?
I also use Opera classic v12.18: I set all sites to not run javascript globally & IF a site needs script I make an exception site preference
