A Knock-Down is where the driver takes a passenger for cash without logging it into their metering device (their phone, for Uber/Lyft) thus cutting out their employer completely. This happens very often with repeat customers, as drivers will give out cards with their personal cell number on it to call when they need service so they can just go "off duty" and take the whole fare.
It's little wonder they're struggling in the measured profit department, and drivers' recorded earnings are so low, statistically.
Any driver with a decent stable of regulars can make a killing without sharing the wealth with Uber/Lyft. There's also very little that they can do about it, either. Even if they let those drivers go, they turn into Gypsy Cabs that simply run the signs, and work for cash only. Lots of them out there.
Apple WANTS people to scrap their old iPhones, because they want to sell New phones to everyone. It's been the driving force behind their No Repair policy, and why they are so Adamant on blocking any Right to Repair legislation that gets attempted. As their new phone sales have been flagging, they are getting desperate to have old phones cycled out so that their new phones get sold. - Most of the recycling problem would be solved by people disabling their iCloud service before donating. That, or "Factory Rest" them beforehand, as suggested in many other posts. - How about a campaign geared toward recycling phones? "How To Reset" info on a collection website, perhaps? That could make a difference as well.
If you're always connected, isn't that the exact *opposite* of what the title suggests? This Ties you to an internet connection, and you can't play if you don't have one. Cord Cutting implies (at least to me) that you don't need a connection to play. The exception is cooperative or competitive play with friends.
Am I the only one that misses the Good Old Days when we could play Starcraft (or Warcraft, or Doom) without a server, between friends?
LAN Parties will be a thing of the past if this goes through. I will certainly be left out. I don't (and Won't) have a Steam account for exactly this reason.
I doubt I'm alone in having my work and files all on my own desktop or laptop. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't want all my files on someone else's server, where their admins can peruse it at their leisure, combing through it with bots for meta data, and targeting ads and updates based on what they find, or worse: Police arriving at my door because a pop-up sent me to a Bad Site, and now there's a trail linking me to something completely unintentional.
Nope. Hard Nope.
At that point, I will move fully into Linux territory, and they can just go broke not getting my money, data or attention.
... we will also build in Prejudice, Racism, Sexism and any number of other "unwanted" elements.
The creation of an AI instruction set that manages to be without prejudice will be nearly impossible, given that whoever makes the list will be skewing the process with their own priorities:
Human Life vs Overall Health of the Planet vs Quality of Life vs Sustainability, etc
Governments will want their say, while special interest groups (like the Rich) will also want to build in their own influence to further their continued existence over other, "lesser" interests...
Next will come those who "Game the System" so it will work in their favour no matter what. A "Back Door" if you will.
You can already see the HAL 900-like issues that will arise.
It's a shame that the 3-Laws system is so flawed. It''s also a shame that "Do No Harm" is too broad and untenable as a foundation, either.
Isn't that a "Right" down there in the Excited States? Or does that not apply to Colleges and Universities? It's a shame she doesn't have the money to fight this, or a decent lawyer could likely get her a HUGE settlement, with compensation for everything she has to endure over all this B.S. Looks like she'll be suffering under the (potentially) false accusations (and summary conviction) op these offenses against the institution. I'd just like to know: Just how much evidence contrary to the accusation does she need to be exonerated, or is she just doomed?
If the common workers have more money to spend, the economy will be better for everybody! They'll be able (and willing) to spend more money, and will do so where they get a decent price on their stuff. Don't they make enough profit corporately that the increased wages make little impact on the overall profits, or are they too money-grubbing to really care? I'm betting on the latter, personally.
Nothing like having the Rich make for another way to inflate the already overpriced real estate of the area by gentrification of the residences that will pop up to fill the need of the jobs. Too bad most of those jobs will be people moving into the area for them and not locals... Maybe they'll have shops and other support for the campus that will completely lock out the actual locals, and be exclusive to the Amazon Culture.
Your smart locks opening for all the wrong people, and staying locked for you. Appliances not working or changing settings to "recommended" ones without asking, ruining your food. Environment controls (heat and A/C) reverting to outside defined settings, possibly cooking or freezing people. Digital Assistants trying to counsel you, based on input, or even alerting the Police (or other authorities). The IoT being hacked on a much wider basis.
Still, a great case for "Certified Dumb Device" (TM)
Well, the observation about their wheat and its effects on friends and acquaintances who have visited there, is as real as it gets. Being wrong about France and their use of GMO products is embarrassing, but I will accept when I am wrong.
I still stand by the statement about GMO wheat no longer being food for people through its modification.
There are a LOT of people all over North America that have problems with wheat. If they go somewhere like France (where it is Illegal to grow/use GMO wheat) they can eat anything, but the moment they get home, the problems start again. - If the wheat is modified to be "resistant to bugs" so that the bugs can no longer eat it, what makes the engineers think it's still food for humans? Is it little wonder that so many people are having trouble processing wheat (or other GMO foods)? There are so many sources on Youtube alone (yes, I know, that's not the best source, but come on!) that detail what Monsanto has done to promote the use of their products while grinding the competition into the turf, that there's a true monopoly out there. Feel free to Google it for yourselves!
Look for something that is reliable (I know, it has Windows as a built-in flaw) and durable, so she won't have to worry about a basic spill, or short fall off a table killing the machine. There are a Lot of brands and system out there that should fit the bill reasonably, so looking for Durable Laptop shouldn't be too hard to do. Add to that, you'll want "less than bleeding edge" and you'll be able to score a reasonable deal, too, as last years' systems are (almost) always deeply discounted and have had the bugs shaken out of them already. Try and get her something with a bit more storage that you anticipate, and the means of keeping things locked down, and you shouldn't need to replace her system until Microsoft does their next "Upgrade or Suffer" campaign.
People are Content with their current phones. After all, they paid Through the Nose for their current iPhone, and are not willing to drop even more their hard-earned cash for yet another upgrade that isn't really a substantial improvement over what they have. Sure, it's a status symbol and all that, but people don't all have the same level of disposable income as they used to. Didn't the PC market go through this a while back? Isn't Microsoft going through this yet again over Windows 7 vs Windows 10, and won't they be feeling same "loss of profits" bite when it comes to the next iteration of Windows? You can certainly tell that Microsoft holds a substantial share of Apple by the way they make the same mistakes.
All things considered, who else should we have handed over the gateway to the internet to? Were there any real choices? Microsoft? I think not. Apple? Ditto. Seriously, though. Who would be the better option?
Cost of living goes up, and the working class gets the shaft again. If the Big Boys would stop lining their pockets long enough to see that it's the working class people that spend their money and keep the economy moving, they might just be more receptive to letting us make more money to actually Spend on their (overpriced) products in the first place. - Trickle-down economics my Butt!
Maybe he hit his limit on Red-Bull or Mountain Dew input and his system simply crashed for good. There are people out there that simply shouldn't have them in the first place, but younger folks feel they are immune to the effects. Surely the M.E. will do a through examination and come up with an accurate cause of death. It just goes to show: When it's your time to go, it's your time.
For me, I first noticed it when the Calculator (yes, the Basic function of a computer) wouldn't open, and I had to download an older version from XP so I could have that functionality again. Next, the Calendar, Notepad, the "Alarms and Clock" and now anything Media-related (editor, player, etc)...
Sheesh, M$! Get your Stuff together here! You want to change Windows OS to a "Service" and This happens? If you ever wonder why people Don't want to go that way, just review your product feedback on these issues, and you just might be able to figure this out for yourselves!
All in all, it's little more than a way for lawyers to milk money out of big corporations by using consumers as leverage on the wallets of said corporations.
Lawyers and legal fees.
What about compensation for the consumers? Is that what the Supreme Court is actually looking into, or is it more like: Is it fair to bleed the corporations if no consumer gets compensation, and. therefore "wrong" to do so?
Just curious as to the reference to "fair" in this usage.
They'll find someone who is. After all, there's a whole bunch of people waiting outside for the chance, so you don't want to just walk away from that, do you?
Most job seekers these days are going to have multiple irons in the fire. Whatever make it to temp first gets the interest, and the rest just fall off the table. We hope that something good heats up first, but the truth is, when we get hungry, we take what we can get, and worry about getting something else later, when we have a bit more financial stability.
I'm still waiting for the whole "there are more jobs than potential employees" situation to actually arise. Maybe the wages will increase past minimum wage as an incentive to attract people.
Now if we could just do something about Affordable Housing so people don't have to work 2 jobs just to have a roof over their head and food on the table, it would be something!
Seriously though, does anyone have any more current info on this little scheme? I certainly haven't heard anything about this before, but I'm old, and may not remember this being news at the time.
Already, there are many that do not like, but will use Windows anyway. Turn that into a Monthly Subscription Service, and they'll not touch it at all.
Some of us out here simply can't afford to add yet another monthly expense/fee/service charge to our already overtaxed personal budgets!
The Pirates will find a way to bypass things or extend end-of-life on older OSs.
This continued trend to force the monetization of the foundations of computers (personal and professional) is sickening! The OS should be Free, and the additional programs should cost an affordable amount to license. We already pay through the nose for internet service and bandwidth!
Geeze, Microsoft! Invest your considerable wealth into yourself, use the vast amount of Interest in it, coupled with corporate license fees to stay in the black, and support your customer base! Without us, you will simple have hungry vultures bleeding you completely to death!
There comes a time when they have to realize: consumers are not willing(able) to pay to replace their tech as often as the Big Companies want them to. Couple that with the "need" to make things that are shoddy, but promise better in the next iteration so they will still sell the current batch, and lead the consumers on until they do it yet again, and you have a customer base that is more than a little "gun-shy" about having to buy all new hardware and relearn something as basic as the OS so they can simply surf the web for cat videos, send e-mail to their gandmas and watch Netflix.
The future is in phones, at least for the mass market.
PCs are for those of us that want to have some real Power to produce something, and Storage to keep it Off the Net! Businesses that want to keep their I.P. in-house and their employees from taking it home with them will still need PCs. Manufacturing and similar industry will need them for a long time. Many are still running OSs as old as Windows 3.1 on core systems (I'm looking at YOU, General Motors!)
It's a real Shame that Microsoft dropped the ball so Hard on their foot when they tried to get into the phone market, or they wouldn't be so desperate to move the Desktop market to a similar model.
It was before the days of MMORPGs and the Graphical stuff they have now. All the things that plague those now, used to be prevalent on the MUD: PKing, cyber bullying, code/glitch abuse, VAPEing of offenders, multi-logging, ALT characters, "illegal Trade" of EQ, "Twinking", etc. All in all, they were training grounds for the admin staff of the new environs.
Ah, the good old days... Still, I made a handful of friends there, and ticked off more than a few offenders, too.
I really don't like farting smoke. All things considered, it's still an employers' economy. They set the wages, and there are still an excess of potential employees for each job. When the actual demand for employees exceeds the available pool of personnel, only then will you see a truly dynamic increase in wages and employer effort in employee retention.

Look at the common cold: Billions each year to treat the symptoms, but if it was cured, Big Pharma might suffer horribly.
Ditto for Caner, Diabetes, the Flu and Allergies.
This then becomes a shining (sci-fi based) example of Cures for the Rich, and the rest for everyone else.
