Re:Fine with me
We have people getting PhD's trying to extract minimal amounts of information out of images; there won't be any automated description writers for them for a few decades at least.
The video search engine Blinkx is based on extracting information from video in order to index it.

A foreigner with no apparent knowledge of UK laws but wearing a uniform, assaulting a UK citizen and then accusing HIM of assault, while falsely stating that you can't take photographs in Oxford Street (London's main shopping area, which is NOT subject to any photography restrictions whatsoever).
Welcome to the future of law enforcement in the UK. Ignorant people who cannot join the police, wearing uniforms and taking out their inferiority complexes on people going about their lawful business.

Re:Wow, that's mature
At least they're not engaging in fisticuffs.

http://www.blinkx.com/video/fist-fight-in-bolivia-congress/BUTRtHbu7LQxO1wFAnd we can at least be glad no one got shot by the vice president.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston_Brooks#Sumner_AssaultEr... uh... well, rather at least no one was MURDERED by the vice president in this instance.

Upload vs. Download stats
While Comcast's recent actions threaten to stifle innovation in this space, Netflix and Amazon Unbox will eventually win. Not to mention YouTube. What is interesting is that related industries such as video search engines and content producers like this will flourish.
I'd like to see some statistics on how many people upload videos vs. how many download/watch them. -

...That I've been using is Blinkx, which can be found at http://www.blinkx.com/overview.php. Very slick.

Blinx.com
As cool as Google is, I also think Blinx.com's search deserves mentioning. According to their white paper they transcribe video content on the fly, and you can even set up "smart searches" which notifies you when new content matching your search becomes available.
This apparently only applies to video content available on the web, but I guess it could potentially be done with TV content as well. It seems to me like this -- if it works -- is one step ahead of Google's approach. -
This looks like BLINKX plus moreI already use blinkx, beta, from http://www.blinkx.com/, to automatically search my files along with internet keywords. It doesn't have the search by date or extension and is not configurable to my liking, but it seems to do a good job of finding things I have misplaced. Integrated with the author's system, this could make a great search system.
Normally I file things in a hierarchial method by year and month and by project name (2004file/9sep/) or (2004file/workfile/projectname), but still I lose track now and then and need keywords. Change the "slash" slant to fit your OS.

Re:Windows Already...
Windows already HAS a built-in search.
Have you noticed that on older versions of Windows (Win98, for example) the command on the Start Menu is called "Find..."
Now the feature is called "Search..."
Does anyone else find this hilarious? These days even Windows isn't so optimistic about actually finding anything...
BlinkX is kinda cool for those of us trying to "Find" things on your computer now...

innovation with search engines
Blinkx
I hope slashdot does a whole article on these guys. maybe they did, but I didn't see it. -
Re:Nice troll
That was a cleverly crafted anti-GPL troll. No it wasnt! Another slashdot story about blinkx had a comment from an other user about blinix (an other grate comercial free software product) and how he had pop ups adds when using firefox 9.2 using the mod adblock. Under these considerations my questions were well founded.

WorthlessWhat good is a search engine if it can't find me litigious bastards

Re:no Thunderbird support
the e-mail part of blinkx only works with outlook (express) and eudora.
Not to mention that it doesn't work on Linux or the Mac, or with any browsers other than Internet Explorer. -
