We are likely heading into a cooling period in the earths climate as the tendentious computer models drift farther and farther from the real earth's temperature. The surface temperature records are being heavily adjusted to create the appearance of more warming (cooling pas records, warming recent ones with fake adjustments and homogenization tricks).

Actually adjustments to the surface temperature records do the opposite of what you say. In general before about 1960 the adjusted data is warmer than the raw data.

The technical term for jailbroken, insecure versions of iOS is "Android."

That's a common belief. In practice, I don't think it's true. In particular, although the Android world sees lots of announcements of vulnerabilities that affect X hundred million devices, the actual exploitation doesn't seem to follow. One reason is that many of the vulnerabilities aren't actually as widespread or are harder to exploit in practice than the researchers describe. Another is that the diversity of the Android ecosystem often means that an exploit has to be customized for each different manufacturer and model, making broad exploitation harder. A third is that Google is often able to successfully mitigate vulnerabilities with the Play store, Verify Apps and updates to the Play services app. There are other reasons as well.

Whatever the reasons, it's interesting to note that we don't see reports of large numbers of Google accounts being compromised via Android vulnerabilities. I'm not claiming that's impossible, and it wouldn't shock me if it happened tomorrow, but the fact that we don't indicates to me that there is actually more right with the Android security situation than is commonly believed. The low real-world malware numbers disclosed in Google's Android security "State of the Union" report further buttress that view.

I'm on the side of moving software engineering towards a Profession rather than Unionization.

Right or wrong my impression of unions are that they are catered towards less skilled labor, while professions require a lot more skill that can be encapsulated by many certifications. Lawyers with their bar and accountants with their CPA are examples. I've no doubt many of us can easily come up with a fairly basic curriculum for basic certification - take for example Secure Coding practices. Given how diverse and specialized a lot of our work can be, I imagine a lot of esoteric certificates can be devised. Certifications would likely need to be renewed from time to time as well, considering how quickly technologies and techniques evolve. A profession centered around good education benefits everyone.

The particular editorial you linked has two links... one to a graph with no source listed, and the second to a long paper... with no information on where this paper was published (or if it was) or who it was reviewed by. Water vapor is short lived and exists in dynamic equilibrium, regularly falling out of the air as precipitation in a very short cycle. It may be the largest holder of heat in the atmosphere (indeed the planet if you count the oceans) but it is not the largest driver. Left to its own devices it would not cause significant warming. The effect of water vapor is a reaction to other forces (such as CO2), not a first cause in itself. That is how a minor gas, CO2, can be the main driver of warming even while being a rather small portion of the atmosphere.

When skeptics use this argument, they are trying to imply that an increase in CO2 isn't a major problem. If CO2 isn't as powerful as water vapor, which there's already a lot of, adding a little more CO2 couldn't be that bad, right? What this argument misses is the fact that water vapor creates what scientists call a 'positive feedback loop' in the atmosphere — making any temperature changes larger than they would be otherwise.

How does this work? The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere exists in direct relation to the temperature. If you increase the temperature, more water evaporates and becomes vapor, and vice versa. So when something else causes a temperature increase (such as extra CO2 from fossil fuels), more water evaporates. Then, since water vapor is a greenhouse gas, this additional water vapor causes the temperature to go up even further—a positive feedback.

How much does water vapor amplify CO2 warming? Studies show that water vapor feedback roughly doubles the amount of warming caused by CO2. So if there is a 1C change caused by CO2, the water vapor will cause the temperature to go up another 1C. When other feedback loops are included, the total warming from a potential 1C change caused by CO2 is, in reality, as much as 3C.

The other factor to consider is that water is evaporated from the land and sea and falls as rain or snow all the time. Thus the amount held in the atmosphere as water vapor varies greatly in just hours and days as result of the prevailing weather in any location. So even though water vapor is the greatest greenhouse gas, it is relatively short-lived. On the other hand, CO2 is removed from the air by natural geological-scale processes and these take a long time to work. Consequently CO2 stays in our atmosphere for years and even centuries. A small additional amount has a much more long-term effect.

So skeptics are right in saying that water vapor is the dominant greenhouse gas. What they don't mention is that the water vapor feedback loop actually makes temperature changes caused by CO2 even bigger.

Firstly, the Earth has far more CO2 than Mars, both in raw mass, and per unit area. But while you're wrong there, its also not that relevant: Mar's climate, such as it is, is not driven by the sun or its atmospheric content of gases (CO2 or other), but by dust and albedo. , not the content of its atmosphere.

It's also much further from the sun, receiving far far less energy from it. If the energy on a unit area of Earth is taken as a unitary 1, then the relative energy intensity on the same unit are of Mars is 0.44, or 44%. Less than half as much energy per unit area. Additionally Mars has only 1/4th (roughly) the surface area of the Earth, which combined with that 44% of the energy per unit area, means the planet Mars as a whole is only receiving 11% as much energy as the Earth does. .

To expect the same driving patterns and effect is silly.

Strictly speaking the employees would not have been forced had they been willing to part with $100 per pay check. Actually, it sounds like what I was describing, but in a different order. But to be fair, I see your point that it basically amounts to forcing people because lower paid employees may not have been able to afford the dock in pay.

Please note, I am a software developer for a consultancy, not a plan administrator, so I don't read up on the latest news in industry publications. My concern is optimized queries, efficient code, semantic HTML, cocktails, beer, and good food. Not necessarily in that order.

That's the concern. Optional benefits (on campus gym, free/reduced cost gym membership, paid personal trainers, reimbursement for exercise classes, paying for home equipment) are cool. Forcing people is not. And if an employer is tracking my health, that falls into category 2 not category 1.

I have not yet heard of an employer actually forcing people (and I would hear of things being in the benefits administration field). But, I have seen employers raise the price of health insurance, and then offer a "discount" for participation in healthy incentives.

It is not fat shaming to want to help your employees get/stay in shape. As a fatty trying to lose weight to get healthy I love this idea. But who said it was be enfoced? I have not seen one of these programs that is not optional.

Here was a plan that was as planned to be enforced by what amounted to hefty fines.

The information gathered could also be shared or sold to third parties, and if you didn't comply, you could be charged an extra 1200 dollars a year.

After in huge amount of outrage over both the personal intrusion and invasion of privacy engendered in the "plan", it was dropped.

I have an android phone, it's not lollipop, but I have full disk encryption running on it. The thing is, my pin is 4 digits long. That's as much as I'm willing to type into a touchscreen to unlock it.

On a stock, non-rooted phone you can disable MMS to provide some degree of protection from this particular exploit.

Although unconfirmed, there are several stagefright booleans in /system/build.prop on some phones. Setting them to false might provide some additional protection. Root and a reasonable text editor will be required (i.e., busybox vi), and you should be able to recover from a boot loop before attempting this modification.

No, what I'm saying is that if the base assumption of this discussion is treatment of women, then why aren't more women speaking up? And I'm saying this for both sides.
