You can spend more money, but you really can't beat the performance of an O2 and/or ODAC. You can spend less money but whatever you get won't be as good.

Rather than whining about it, start a Fixit Clinic in your town. It's great fun, and everybody learns from it. You can ask the guy at that webpage how to do it, it's pretty simple, but he has good tips.

I just put Linux Mint 17.1 MATE 64-bit on a Lenovo IdeaPad S415. Everything just worked out of the box, and that includes both the multitouch touchpad and the touchscreen. Also the network, wifi, sound, and graphics. Everything.

That IdeaPad is a year old. A year ago, no Linux that I tried worked out of the box with it; graphics didn't work. X always got confused by the fact that the machine has two graphics adapters (one built-in to the AMD APU chip, and a discrete one).

I've really been enjoying Linux Mint 17.1; it seems to be a big improvement over Linux Mint 16. You can easily and non-destructively try it, just by booting from a USB flash drive that has Linux Mint on it. (You can use UNetBootIn to make the USB flash drive.)

While I can't guarantee that Linux Mint 17.1 will work on your hardware, it worked great on mine so I think it's worth your time to try it out.

Here's an example ("writeOutput") from the official Sun Java Tutorial on how you're supposed to write out a UTF-8 file. And it's broken. It works when your text never takes up more than two bytes per character but when it does it translates the multichar UTF-16 representation incorrectly and produces a non-standards-compliant UTF-8 that some readers will read but others won't. here's someone posting a workaround and several dozen people talking about having that problem and thanking them for the solution.

That's just one problem among many - Java's unicode support is a bit clunky. Don't get me wrong, it's leaps and bounds better than what C/C++ have, but that doesn't make it great. I tend to concur with the argument that UTF-16 is in general harmful. You tend to get these sort of problems on pretty much every platform that uses it. People know that it can take up more than two words yet there's always someone who makes the mistaken assumption that all characters are one word, and because longer sequences aren't used that commonly, the code often ships broken rather than being caught in development.

You might be able to find a couple examples to the contrary, out of the ocean of badly-produced releases, but the images posted to that message board are proof of nothing. It takes a track containing 2.6 million individual samples, and squeezes it into a graph that's only 500px wide. The appearance of higher peaks in the vinyl rip is an artifact of that rip going from digital (studio) to analog (vinyl) then back to digital (ripped to computer). Not an indication of actual dynamic range increase.

I assure you, if you were presented with a proper comparison of zoomed-in waveform of a very dynamic sound, say a bass drum hit, it would look like this:

The top waveform is the CD and the bottom is the vinyl. You can see it's compressed and clipped just as badly as the CD - indeed they just fed the CD audio into the vinyl cutting machine. The physical limitations of the vinyl format (needle needs to adhere to the groove wall, etc) have just caused it to become a bit distorted. You can get the same effect by applying a bandpass filter to the CD version, that will also give you varied peaks without any actual dynamic range increase.

Besides, if someone was going to take the time to create a separate dynamic mix of their album... it definitely wouldn't be Kanye West.

In my experience, taking the initiative to spend a little unforced time to go politely beyond the question at the white-board, and demonstrate a deeper understanding, after answering the question, is not being pompous or arrogant. This is the exact activity that has got me in trouble.

The cases of this I can cite are all dev supervisor to dev interviewee. At one point I was even told this was was going on, and they were trying to put me in a different group out from under that supervisor to avoid the problem. Ultimately, there is no amount of experience that can teach how to prepare for this slandering due to someones inferiority complex. It just happens in my experience, as even a _really_ good answer can trigger it.

I've learned to avoid those companies when that happens, and I've happily moved on. In so doing I've been vindicated about who I am, and sometimes even made them unfortunately upset when they followed up with another opportunity, after their absurd politically driven rejection.

Like when? Automatically marking incoming emails as spam? Unlike your credit card, hotel, etc., Google keeps any data they collect to themselves, which is better than everyone else. Because they offer a lot of services they may collect too much data for your taste, but there are all sort of things they are accused of doing but don't do, such as rigging Chrome to send data back to them, Google glass always recording, etc.

The only cases I can find are a rogue employee using root powers to read someone's gmail (fired), and at a stretch you might be referring to PRISM. If you are, I have a lot to say on that subject.

Why are you fighting against the people who are fighting for privacy?

They aren't fighting for privacy in any meaningful sense. Occasionally they fight back as a PR move, but they've allowed all sorts of egregious privacy violations, and violate your privacy themselves.

Fighting back falls in two categories: legal and technical. Note that we need to fight on both, but the bad guys can win on whichever is weaker. I'm not a lawyer. Google published this video. My attitude is that we should fix the technical issues and hope that the lawyers will also fix the legal issues. We know that the NSA chose to bypass legal process, so there must be at least some things they want but can't get.

Google is working on end point security with Project zero, ChromeOS (secure boot + remote management), bug finding tools like afl and asan, etc. Google is working on transit security, they're upranking SSL sites, killing off SSL 3.0, killing off SHA-1, marking plain http as insecure, they invented and deployed Channel ID, Certificate pinning (which caught an intelligence agency they didn't know was attacking!). Their own networks were being snooped and they claim they now encrypt all traffic in and between data centers, but we only have their word on that. They also claim they were already planning to add encryption but reprioritized it when it was revealed that the NSA was already taking advantage of it. They're pushing for larger RSA keys, and for newer crypto entirely with features like forward secrecy. It could be argued that the newer crypto is more likely to have back doors, but as it stands there is no evidence that the NSA had any breakthrough technique for decrypting either new or old, they would just break into machines that have keys, or possibly factor smaller (1024 and less) RSA keys. Google deployed OTP and invented the U2F system which is better than OTP. As far as I'm aware, Google isn't doing much for DNS security (besides running Google DNS which has cache poisoning protection) or IP routing security (besides running Google Fiber), but perhaps they think those become irrelevant unless the attacker can also forge TLS keys.

All of those are security issues, which are tightly intertwined with privacy in that if your security can be penetrated then you lose your privacy. They also created "incognito mode", a pure privacy feature with no security implication

Tyson's tweet parodies one of the most recognizable of all bible verses: "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." That is definitely trolling, in the sense of making a statement which is almost correct, but in which a certain segment of people will find an error that requires correction. It's trolling like parodies of the lord's prayer. It's trolling like a picture of Mohammed eating a BLT.

Either way its difficult to defend the idea that China intentionally did this when google gladly censors their search results and complies with all local regulations.

They apparently stopped doing that a while ago.

A current Google-Codecademy promo takes things further, asking kids to declare their gender and race, apparently to exclude all boys from a $100 per-student reward ("gift codes will be distributed only to girls"}, and white/Asian boys from a $1,000 per-10-students bonus ("Why is the bonus funding specifically geared for girls and students of color?").

The approach of replacing net asset taxation with what amounts to property insurance is a good one and indeed one I've suggested as part of an anarcho-capitalist model for government as mutual insurance company (ala Lysander Spooner). The basic income then becomes, literally, a dividend to the shareholders in the mutual insurance company -- which maintains defense of national territory as the foundation for all other property.

As for intellectual property, there are genuinely heroic inventions that need to be rewarded because technology development is damn expensive and money needs to be placed in the hands of proven inventors. The problem is patents are the _only_ asset that is de facto taxed by the Federal government -- when it should be the only asset that is _exempt_, if any. Moreover, the legal fees of maintaining filings world-wide should be picked up as a natural security measure -- as well as defending intellectual property as though it were sovereign territory. Finally, the standard of "non-obviousness" needs to be much more strictly enforced to prohibit patent trolls. For instance, I don't consider my invention of the massively multiplayer first person shooter 3D game to be particularly heroic or "non-obvious", which is why I've never made a big deal about not receiving much in the way of royalties from the follow-on industry. It was something that was bound to happen one way or another as more people got their hands on computers with graphics and networking capability.

On the other hand, probably the most pathological example of intellectual property in history is MS-DOS, so you cite it at length for good reason. However, if the property value assessment is, as I have often suggested, a market-based liquidation value, from virtually the moment that IBM made the decision to distribute MS-DOS with their 4.77MHz 8088 PC, the tax rate on Bill Gates would have been so great that he would have had to very quickly sold MS-DOS to some legal person that had at least as great a vision for the future of operating systems as DRI.

There were a number of operating systems around at that time but few that would run on the 8086/8088 hardware. One with multitasking was the iRMX86 OSsupplied by Intel with its 8086/8088 chips for real time development. I don't know how or why they overlooked that. My suspicion is that the real reason they chose MS-DOS was that Bill Gates's mother had direct contacts with the IBM board of directors.

If that's the case, it would make me feel quite a bit better about my decision to abandon development of an 8086/8088 OS -- a development that started before the first silicon was shipped while I was at the PLATO project where we modified the CDC Cyber COMPASS assembler to produce the instructions documented on the preliminary datasheets, and execute on an emulator running on the Cyber 6500 during off-hours.

The reason I initiated that project, with some of the PLATO system programmers (Ray Ozzie was a system programmer at PLATO but was consumed by his work on the Z80 firmware) was that I foresaw the horror of a bad operating system becoming the network-effect atop Moore's Law, and wanted to head it off. Others, primarily Steve Freyder, agreed and pitched in.

It was obvious to me that whoever got the critical mass OS for that platform would have a natural monopoly and lock out competition -- including superior operating systems.

I abandoned that project only because Mike Pavloff at Control Data HQ offered me a position at the Arden Hills Operations where I could pursue a mass market version of the PLATO network which would have, using Ozzie's Z80 firmware, bypassed the personal computer era entirely with a Mac-like UI and built-in 1200bps modem starting in 1981 with a monthly service charge of $40/month including "terminal" rental. We had that system benchmarked out at a scale that could
