From the chart things were pretty steady at around 100,000 per year from '64 till '82. Doubled to 200kpy by '94, and doubled again to 400kpy by 2005.

Or roughly put, the number of patents filed between '64 and '84 is close to the number filed between '05 and '10.

The color was derived from multiple passes using red and blue filters over the same photo sensor. Green was derived from red and blue and hence we get the RGB color representation. Some info describing that is on this page - not a primary source, but matches what I recall.

So sort of another con or pro, depending on how you look at it:
Windows 8 has removed the Previous Versions functionality. It has a new functionality called File History, which doesn't use shadow copies and instead only copies some files (libraries, desktop, etc) to a second hard drive. This is a bit of a step backwards in my opinion for these reasons:

1) Previous Versions didn't need an entire copy of the file. So you only used space as it was changed. I think File History copies the entire file every time it backs it up.
2) Previous Versions worked on the entire hard drive, not just a small subset of files.

The pros for File History:
1) On a separate hard drive, so if one being backed up goes down, you are good to go.
2) Interface allows copies to be made more regularly. However, this could've been done just as easily with if Previous Versions had been beefed up.

I've found that you may still be able to use Previous Versions, though. You have to re-enable system protection on the drive first, though. After that, you have to access the drive through the network interface. ie: \\ComputerName\C$. Then Restore Previous Versions should be in the menu again. I haven't seen this work in action, though, as I just recently installed, so I can't confirm for sure it works. First of all, this is nothing new, it was covered here last year:
Specifically "However looking at the aspects of protactinium separation, I'm wondering if this could be a hole in the process which would allow for much lower U-232. U-232 is the daughter product of Pa-232 just as U-233 is the daugher [sic] of Pa-233. Pa-233 has a half-life of 26.9 days but Pa-232 is only 1.3 days."

They also say "protactinium is not easy to remove from molten salts." and "In a 2 Fluid design we can lower losses to Pa down to almost nothing by simply increasing the volume of blanket salt."

You also would have a problem in that thorium generates just enough neutrons to sustain the reaction. I would think separating the protactinium instead of letting it decay to fissile U233 would be counterproductive, as that would leave less fissile material in the reactor. Why not just build a bomb with the U233 you used as starter fuel?

I highly question whether this is geared toward using thorium in an IFR (integral fast reactor, or what the nuclear industry wants because it is solid fuel based like what they've got already), which also requires reprocessing and starter fuel for optimal usage and burns nearly all of its fuel (but is complex and expensive).

How about implementing just a few of the most common C-library functions in dedicated hardware. For example, atoi(), strlen(), or printf(). Although the software routines are highly optimised, they still take hundreds to thousands of cycles. Dedicated libc functions would require a significant amount of chip die space, BUT, they would be really power-efficient - powered off most of the time, and simply used when needed. Imagine being able to use these functions as single-cycle commands... even if the core ran at 100MHz, the performance would be amazing. Essentially it lets us trade a few hundred thousand transistors (now very cheap) for a few mW (still rather valuable).

Yeah, but how do we decide which functions those are? And why C functions? And once we hard-code those functions into silicon, we have to jump through extra hoops to change their behavior.

All three of your examples make a weak argument for this. atoi() is out of favor, since it doesn't detect errors like the strtol() function does. strlen() has no safety or bounds checking, and printf() is horribly complex.

BTW, some instructions in the x86 family are very specific for things exactly like this already. For your strlen() example, the SCASQ instruction and friends so something oh-so-close.

Now, call that what you will, but it isn't the rantings of some crazy person. However -- again for the sake of truth and fairness -- the graphs in that article are misleading. They are the doings of the media, not the scientist being quoted. [Jane Q. Public, 2011-11-22]

When you claimed that climate scientists predict temperature trends on timescales of 8 or 9 years, I pointed out that 8 or 9 years is too short to obtain a statistically significant trend. Now you've tightened your self-imposed blinders even further by talking about 2 or 3 year temperature trends. Note that any 2 or 3 (or 8 or 9) year timespan would be too short to obtain a statistically significant trend. It's not something special about the last 2,3,8, or 9 years, so contrarians can recycle this talking point ad nauseum. That's the entire point of the Escalator, in fact. (Incidentally, at least 17 years are needed to establish a statistically significant trend of global surface temperatures.)

But let's read your article, Scientist who said climate change sceptics had been proved wrong accused of hiding truth by colleague, by David Rose:

[Prof. Judith Curry] said that Prof Muller's claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a 'huge mistake', with no scientific basis. ... Like the scientists exposed then by leaked emails from East Anglia University's Climatic Research Unit, her colleagues from the BEST project seem to be trying to 'hide the decline' in rates of global warming. In fact, Prof Curry said, the project's research data show there has been no increase in world temperatures since the end of the Nineties - a fact confirmed by a new analysis that The Mail on Sunday has obtained. 'There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn't stopped,' she said. 'To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate.' However, Prof Muller denied warming was at a standstill. 'We see no evidence of it [global warming] having slowed down,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. There was, he added, 'no levelling off'. ... As for the graph disseminated to the media, she said: 'This is 'hide the decline' stuff. Our data show the pause, just as the other sets of data do. Muller is hiding the decline. 'To say this is the end of scepticism is misleading, as is the statement that warming hasn't paused. It is also misleading to say, as he has, that the issue of heat islands has been settled.'

Wow. These are very serious accusations. But are they valid?

The graph in Rose's article labelled "the inconvenient truth" is misleading, but mainly for the same reason that Jane's references to short term trends are misleading. Since that graph only shows 10 years of data, any conclusions drawn from it will be conclusions about the noise in the climate, not the long-term trend. But this isn't really the media's fault: Prof. Curry chose that absurdly short timespan herself by talking about the trend since 1998.

Also, the abrupt cooling shown in the BEST data in April and May of 2010 isn't real. Those months only include data from 47 stations in Antarctica, compared to March 2010 which has 14488 spread around the world. So April and
