Re:Sounds to me...That's just the apk troll.
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=19915&st=0&p=92230&#entry92230
If anybodys intrested in trying it or helping its quite large for a hosts file, pulled form various sorces then compiled.
APK was working on it, but he desided to act like a child and run off when people wouldnt agree with his opinions on 64bit windows(if you dont know who apk/alec staar is be thankfull.....)
This is the same "troll wannabe" who claims that it's a great way to prevent getting viruses because since he installed it on his (*cough*) girlfriend's (*cough*) computer, she only gets a couple of viruses a month. Anyone who points out that "only" a couple of viruses a month is a FAIL, this guy starts anonymously posting crud after he gets back from the noon shift at the fast-food restaurant he works at part-time. He's very easy to troll.

Re:Peace
Hell for all we know he could be dead or hospitalised.
Unlikely. For example, Lance Davis recently anonymised the DNS records for centos.org.
He is the admin (possibly owner) of definitesoftware.com, which owns UK ISP uklinux.net. People have been complaining that uklinux has been going tits up (unanswered emails, etc.) for several years now.
Anyway, here's some addresses for him. Maybe someone local could look him up.

Re:http://thepiratebay.org/search/Spore/0/99/0
Use an IP blocker. http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php
moblock for linux or peerguardian for other platforms
-
Re:http://thepiratebay.org/search/Spore/0/99/0
Don't forget to install your IP blocker! http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php
moblock for linux.
peerguardian for other systems I think. -
Re:This is the way we're all headed
In a similar way, I use tor to route all http tracker requests.
Additionally, I use Transmission along with the Bluetack 'bad ip' blocklist. The blocklist covers various 'bad' netblocks such as record companies etc.

Re:recording industry? emule 0.47bEveryone - please download and use eMule 0.47b, it now has protocol obfuscation:
Protocol Obfuscation is a feature which causes eMule to obfuscate or "hide" its protocol when communicating with other clients or servers. Without obfuscation, each eMule communication has a given structure which can be easily recognized and idenitfied as an eMule packet by any observer. If this feature is turned on, the whole eMule communication appears like random data on the first look and an automatic identification is no longer easily possible. This helps against situations were the eMule Protocol is unjustly discriminated or even completly blocked from a network by identifying its packets.
It is however important to note what Obfuscation is not intended to do: It will not increase your anonymity, it will not make you "invisible" in any way and it will also not protect you effective against eavesdroppers. Also if your network admin has a good legal reason to block eMule (for example a restircted company network), bypassing it may cause you other unwanted consequnces.
Obfuscation is currently availble for ED2k TCP and UDP, Server TCP and UDP and Kad TCP communication. Kad UDP packets are not yet obfuscatable.
By default, each eMule client (>= 0.47b) supports obfuscated connections to other clients, but doesn't actively requests them. If your ISP is not discriminating the ED2K Protocol you do not need to change anything and still help other users which may need obfuscation. Otherwise your have the following options which can be found in the
Also, please update the ipfilter data file here in eMule, options, security, tick off "filter servers too", and put this URL in the "Update from URL box"
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz
And click load.
Dont forget to add these two servers to static and dont forget to connect to both KAD and the ED2K networks!

Old news for those that dare to share
As I recall it started to get obvious a couple of weeks ago. Rome's a great series I couldn't see without P2P groups. MediaSentry released a 95+% complete fake of the next week's episode onto the networks a week early in order to try and entrap sharers. I tested that release by repairing the 95% downloaded file and it was indeed just silent black video fill-in. Peerguardian lit up like a christmas tree during (and for days after) the download.
I'm curious as to how they can chase people for sharing a file devoid of any content or copyrighted materials like that.
Anyway, it's really not a problem for people that use blocklists and blocklist managing tools such as PeerGuardian.
Now here's a note for the HBO readers. I will pay for your content. I'll buy DVD's of this series and all the other quality TV shows I can only currently acquire 'illegally'. I will also be quite happy to see a little watermark advertisement in place of corporate branding in the corner of the screen. That's some premium ad space you're wasting there - you know this quality material will spread like a virus. And on top of that it's an additional incentive to buy the non-watermarked content when you make it available. Come on, please do get with the programme. Believe it or not we actually want companies that make quality entertainment to succeed in their efforts almost as much as the company executives themselves. The old distribution model is dead. Believe it or not, and scary though it may be, this is actually good news for all of us. -

Re:Network admins! Prevent this from happeningMost black lists are for smtp servers only
Not anymore. Checkout this site, they have blacklists for anti-p2p, spyware (neat), hijacked IPs, goverment agencies and so on. The spyware one is especially good, as it's the only effective block. Once you've found the spyware, you've already had your privacy compromised. Stop it from dialing home in the first place!
-
Re:RBL of infected/malicious sites? There are some. This site has several different blocklists, such as ad-hosts, anti-p2p bodies, spyware companies, hackers, trackers, trojans etc. The link above lists what's available. Sure, the lists aren't 100% acurate, but they are a lot better than nothing.
Very highly recommended. With the case of p2p, it's good to keep your head down. It's the tall ones that get their heads chopped off...
They also have software to convert the lists to various formats for use in different firewalls. iptables fans should check out "linblock". Beware though, a large list can take an hour to parse on your typical recycled firewall box, but the tool merges the ranges to keep the tables as short as possible.

Re:So how was he caught? He must have downloaded a few movies from the wrong sharer (i.e. copyright enforcer).
Yes, that's the most likely explaination. There are a large number of companies that sell this service. You can find a large potential list of IPs that people suspect of doing this. The rest of the site is worth a look.
I block this list at my firewall, and I do get the odd hit or two each day from this iptables chain. If you are interested in doing this on Linux, checkout "linblock", a script for applying the list to iptables. Beware though, it's a big list and it can take an hour to apply all the rules!

Re:35%
But the fact that 35% of all 'net traffic is being carried by one program is simple awesome, and a great credit to BitTorrent's creators.
Have you ever used BT?
You mean one protocol. There are many, many different BitTorrent clients. In fact, I don't know anyone who uses the original client (at least, not directly). Most people I know use Azureus. And it's much to the credit of the BitTorrent creator. One guy called Bram Cohen.
Why would they need to sniff the traffic? They simply connect to machine advertising torrents of copyright material and note the IP addresses of all the people who send them parts of the file (or at least enough to qualify as having tried to ilegally obtain a copy). This is why people opt for IP blacklists like Safepeer for Azureus or Protowall for clients that don't have a blocklist plugin. It blocks connections from organisations with a vested interest in snooping on your shares. In many cases it's a bit overbearing though. -
Re:PeerGuardian
FWIW, I find that ProtoWall combined with Blocklist Manager is a good combination. ProtoWall installed with 5931 IP entries to filter, and after running BlocklistManager there are 43473 IP entries being blocked.
(Unfortunately ProtoWall only runs on WinXP/2k/2k3, and the install process can be buggy, but once up and running it's great.)
(Also, I don't know how true this is, but one post here claims the current version of PeerGuardian is out-of-date.) -

Re:Profit
Slashdot has a genuine misunderstanding of the piracy network that exists. There are groups dedicated to cracking and releasing software, games, and even ebooks. There are websites dedicated to listing checksums which let you search for legitimate copys of the releases on the filesharing networks. None of this requires you to be "Elite" or "In the know." Pirating couldn't be easier with the anti-RIAA/MPAA/Government protection measures made by other people just a few searches away. As much as people think every download is monitored, every file is tracked, it simpily isn't true. Bittorrent, the much vaunted transfer method, is not secure, but Edonkey can be made relativly safe.
Edonkey
Sharereactor, a libary of edonkey links
Methlabs, Peerguardian's homepage, protects from MPAA/RIAA etc
Bluetack, home of the Blocklist Manager, keeps Peerguardian updated
With these you can find almost any book, any game, any program, virus free and not have to worry about getting a letter from your ISP. It's not perfect, but it's certinally better than bittorrent, and it isn't as hard as most people on slashdot think. -
Re:Hosts FileYou can make a adserver blocklist with the BLM: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Conten
t &pa=showpage&pid=1And you can import the Blocklist into Zonealarm PRO using ZAUpdate: http://home.comcast.net/~zaupdate/index1.8.html

Re:C&D time?
Why oh why would you not P2P without a condom? BT Plugins like SafePeer (for Azureus) or applications like Protowall use blacklists from places like Bluetack to filter out known *AA addresses, among others. I don't really know how effective they are, but I'd be curious to hear from people that use them and still get C&D's. I have heard of plenty of people getting C&D's but those people weren't using condoms.
YMMV of course. I'm not advocating digital theft, nor am I criticizing it. I'm just curious as to why people aren't protecting themselves. Maybe I'm just fooling myself that they work at all, but I'd like to think they do.

Re:Spammers are thieves at the very least
They steal bandwidth. They steal disk space. They steal our time, and time costs dearly. You can't replace it.
Stop spam and spammers at the TCP/IP connection level.
Directory of IP Based Blacklists
Geographic IP lists
Use an aggressive antispam solution to filter spam out. I wrote one and use it regularly to check my email on my terms and not that of other solutions that use more complicated rule-based or statistical methods to fight spam.
Please keep this in mind should my approach be ridiculed (it has been in the past) by people enarmored by statistical approaches that are not as effective as they used to be.
-
Don't forget
the likes of programs such as protowall and peerguardian, both of which have huge active communities constantly updating IP block lists, blocking all the p2p evils out there like bayTSP and other monitoring agencies.
A huge amount of p2p clients (most kazaa lite buids, azureus, one of the most popular bit torrent clients) have methods built in to support these block lists, and are turned on by default. -
Re:buyer problem--block email proxies with this.
At least that is a lot more than you can do to some spammer working out of their trailer in central Arkansas and relaying their spam through a Korean proxy.
Directory of IP Based Blacklists
I found this site rather by accident, I'm glad I did.
If the proxy list there is reasonably accurate, one could block a good deal of proxied email spam. -
Re:Response to MPAA - Even better(?)
Simply send the URLs to the 'infringing' content to your ISP and the MPAA/RIAA and ask all parties concerned to look at and/or hear the 'infringing' content.
That should be the end of the matter. If not, then send all parties concerned the 'infringing' content with a bill for expenses in sending the 'infringing' content to them via registered mail with return receipt. If you are not reimbursed, then use the 7-step litigation procedure outlined by the parent poster.
Using decoy files will do nothing but waste bandwidth, slow down the internet, and cause the MPAA/RIAA to scream 'Entrapment' while they seek out pirated content from IP addresses not already blacklisted. -
When you can't fight RIAA......just make sure you are defending your own computer as good as possible.
If you can not pay for court expenses, at least make sure you install PeerGuardian or Protowall or make sure that at least you have a firewall to drop the ip ranges of anti-p2p organization.

Re:K++ edition
The article said K++ and K-Lite are integrated with the PeerGuardian database. That's a list of IPs from which to refuse traffic. You can get the plaintext list here and run it through a converter here that converts the list into a script full of iptables commands to cut off the ??AA at your firewall, so they won't even get through to whatever filesharing software you're running.
