Re:Dear Slashdot
I too would like links to audio files clearly marked as such.
Your wish has been granted by the magical Firefox extension fairy: TargetAlert -
Re:PDF, Not Plugin Link
By the way, I've just noticed that the version available at Mozilla Add-Ons isn't compatible with Firefox 1.5, however, the one available at the author's homepage is, sorry for that.

Re:My extensions
One I would never want to be without, because of pdfs:
Target Alert (http://www.bolinfest.com/targetalert/)
Lets you know what you're about to click on. Helpful for stupid webpage owners who don't label mailto or pdf links. -

Re:I think some people here are missing the point
I want to puke when I see the acrobat reader splash screen come on when I want to look at a file...
It won't keep you from puking, but it will give you a noticeable but unobtrusive warning, which may give you enough time to grab the nearest vomit receptacle. Check out the TargetAlert Firefox extension. -
Re:Please Label PDF links!
Mozilla/Firefox: TargetAlert.
CSS3 compliant browser: a[href$=".pdf"]:after {content: "[PDF]"; font-size:smaller} in your user style sheet. Modify as needed for other types of "annoying" links.

Re:Links [OT]
Better yet, use TargetAlert, a Firefox extension.
In addition to the great PDF notification feature, it also tells me about those pesky links that open in new windows---which I hate, because I just want them in the same window, or a new tab, or something.
-
Re:Links [OT]
I use Target Alert - an extention for Firefox that shows icons for links that go to PDFs, zip files... etc. (it's customizable). It's a very nice, simple program.

Re:Those PDF's again... aaargh
Here's another FF extension that I find mildly useful: http://www.bolinfest.com/targetalert/ Similar to the CSS strategy below (probably what it uses, I don't know), but it's done for you, plus handles all kinds of various links that can be annoying, plus it's very configureable.
-
Re:Those PDF's again... aaarghBasically, TargetAlert isn't Free Software:
"you are free to browse the source code of TargetAlert to see what it does and to learn how it works; however, you are not allowed to copy or modify the code and redistribute it.
...
TargetAlert will not have a "traditional" open-source license in the future because I do not approve of how it has been copied and redistributed as a different Firefox extension in the past."
That's reason 1. Reason 2 is that a Firefox extensions only works with Firefox, while modifying userContent.css works on all Mozilla applications--something I found useful recently as I jumped ship to Epiphany. :) -
Re:Those PDF's again... aaarghThe Firefox TargetAlert plugin is quite nice too.
Although your css solution intrigues me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Targetalert, a Firefox extension that shows a little icon next to links giving an indication of what the target is (pdf, word, excel, ppt, zip, email, xml). -
Re:Scared?
Get TargetAlert for Firefox and enable the "New Window" alert. It'll put a little new window icon next to any link that will open in a new window.
-
Re:woulda been nice to know it was PDF ...
I would highly recommend Firefox plugin/extension TargetAlert. This extension places a small icon next to links to indicate the type of link it is, including a small PDF icon for PDF files, a Word icon for Word files etc.
I knew it was a PDF link
:-) -
what makes it better are the plugins, my top 5
here they are:
Adblock
Session Saver
Web Developer
IE View
Target Alert -
