First things first
Remove all Mono-based applications and install MonoNoNo to keep the MS-backed trojan horses out. http://boycottnovell.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mono_Applications

Re:*pint* to the mods
Depends on "who" is modding you insightful. Given the people you associate with, it's no surprise to see others of your kind giving you a pat on the back. To the rest of us, you are worse than a troll. You're a bona fide asshole.

Jihadists AHuxley and Tubal-Cain
Well, now we see who is pumping M$ on Slashdot.
It looks like turfers are turning their poison pens towards Sun, just as near a decade ago they turned towards the late Novell.

twitter: It's like the secretary in Hitler's bunker. She heard everything but never felt responsible.
schestowitz: People are easy to program
twitter: People want to believe their leaders and employers no matter how brutal and wrong they are.
amd-linux: hmmm lets not compare MS with Hitler - as a German I have difficulties with that
schestowitz: That's what makes us just high-class chimpanzees
amd-linux: I mean MS is ruthless, but they did not kill 6 million people...
schestowitz: More
schestowitz: There are also the wars
twitter: they push patent law and deprive the world of life saving drugs
schestowitz: Some nations are still invading other countries
schestowitz: And people are taught that they "Do the Right Thing"
twitter: As an American, I have a lot to learn from people like Hitlerâ(TM)s secretary
schestowitz: WT*? Look at this headlne: http://www.techflash.com/microsoft/Microsoft_faces_long_â¦
twitter: I am responsible for Iraq and Gaza.Microsoft = Hitler. Microsoft employees are like Hitler's secretary. And oddly enough twitter is like her too, responsible for all the evils of the Bush admin.

Re:Pure Parasites.
I don't know why, but this just popped into my mind, where some poor guy says he commutes with some Microsoft employees and you say "it must be sickening".
Serious question - how much of the sponsor payout to Schestowitz' annoying little operation goes to you? 10%? 5%? Just curious, really.
-
Pure Parasites.
As someone who once worked at MS (and now at a Linux company, so sad that I feel I need to qualify that)
You should qualify that further. Some people consider Novell a "Linux company" but it's poison.
The city of Redmond is 47,000 people. There are 40,000 employees of Microsoft in Redmond every day.
Most people would consider a company that works hard to avoid local taxes to be a significant burden instead of the economic contributor people expect. Why is it that more M$ employees don't live in Redmond? Why is it that the 40,000 people of Redmond should shoulder the cost of a bridge on private property? Why should Federal funds be used for such a project? [Hint: they avoid Federal and International taxes with their Irish shell company.]

Experts saw it coming nine years ago.
M$ Executives have been deathly afraid of market share errosion for quite some time now and have been on a "Jihad" to prevent it. The fight is brutal and involves bribes, threats, sabotage and espionage. Look at the recent Walmart case as an example - they went after every piece of the chain to make sure GNU/Linux was more expensive than Windows on the same hardware and finally driven off at the source. They do all of this because they know they can't and won't win a free choice or a fair fight. They know their development model is broken and their products are not competitive so badly that they need a slush fund called "EDGI" to essentially dump where they run into a real choice situation. It can't last forever, even with $1 billion per month in advertising, fake studdies and astroturf. GNU/Linux is real and anyone can try it at zero cost.
Going free might cure some of their problems, but it's probably too little too late. Windows has consistently failed to deliver what customers want, but free software does that by definition. Windows might be made usable if they let customers add features they like and strip out DRM. But how many developers are left to do this? M$ has been driving what they describe as "pawns" and "one night stands" off. It will take years of honest releases for people to believe M$ has turned over a new leaf and for a community to form again. Until then, Windows will suck like Vista does. M$'s monopoly revenue stream is not something that can be maintained under any circumstances. Without M$'s constant threat of technical sabotage, customers will turn to free applications even if they do keep using Windows. Worse for M$, hardware vendors will turn to GNU/Linux and the rest of the world will follow. M$ might be able to survive as a GNU/Linux company, but it will be a much smaller place than it is now and they will have to give up their dreams of media dominance based on unAmerican censorship and restrictions. The alternative to free survival though, is complete collapse.

Wonder if this is one of the reasons?
Microsoft threatening Intel unless they knock off the Linux integration. Now, all of a sudden, Intel is having all kinds of problems with their Linux drivers.
Coincidence or anti-competitive behavior in action?

No Boycott Novell Link?
obligatory for Twitter stories...
-
Slashdot's fall from grace.
And so it continues.... The "Slashdot" that I have come to know and love over the past 9 years continues to degrade itself by linking to publications such as Boycot Novell, an amature looking troll-bait website preceded in it's ridiculousness only by one of it's founding authors, Roy Schestowitz. A man who, along with his well known counterpart who wrote the submission above, has been pretty accurately summerized in a previous posting.
-
Can anyone explain the link?
I clicked the link from the end of the story and was unable to find anything on that page referring to "Peter Quinn", "Quinn", or even just "Pete".
What information are we supposed to glean from that link? -
Den of paranoia?
Some people think so. Paranoia is what leads to things like these (make sure you read the comments there), and makes that blog a rather annoying cesspool which occasionally plops out a useful bit of information.
Stay away from extremists, and get your news from people other than Slashdot's resident joke.
And kudos to ScuttleMonkey, who had to remove all the creative spelling and grammar errors from the submission.
-
Spammer, and your friends are smear artists
Instead of links to your "funny" monetized blog (which is pretty much the only thing you do on Slashdot, thus the "spammer" label), you should also link to Roy Shitsforwitz' examples of libel and personal smears against Wikipedia users.
-
Told you so!
The reactionary forces of the twentieth-century United States finally conceded defeat and shut down the Five-Year Plan Tractor Plants of Detroit, where ridiculous oversized transport was bashed together by semi-literate peasants between fifths of vodka from the nerve gas factory next door, and the Five-Year Plan Software Plants of Redmond, where ridiculous oversized operating systems were bashed together by semi-numerate fresh graduates between fifths of Red Bull.
Hiring in most Microsoft divisions has frozen in the last six months and 30GB Zunes are already on suicide watch. "The workload's impossible to keep up with," said blog technical evangelist Gary M. Stewart. "I've even been answering Slashdot comments on Boycott Novell or Groklaw. It's impossible to keep track of! Anyway, you're just another Twitter sockpuppet. Or Mini-Microsoft. Admit it."

EDGI
I'll put money on it people will be looking in and asking their own government why Microsoft is given multi-billion dollar contracts when Vietnam's public service is just as productive (if not more) using Linux/OpenOffice.org as they would using Windows.
<tinfoil-hat-mode>
That makes it plausible that Microsoft would'nt want those questions asked *ever*-- for example by making sure none such examples of low-TCO linux/openoffice.org solutions exist.
*WARNING:* link to extremely paranoid foaming-at-the-mouth anti-Microsoft blog, so please check other sources of information as well! It should be in the Comes vs Microsoft anti-trust case evidence (that's public information I hope).
On the Boycott Novell blog, there's an article where Roy Schestowitz claims that Microsoft had a secret marketing program called âoeEducation and Government Incentives programâ (EDGI), in 2002, to block exposure of governments to Linux at (almost) all costs:
EDGI is a customer-focused program that is for circumstances (like the one you reference) where an education and/or government customer is going to purchase naked PCâ(TM)S or PCâ(TM)S w/Linux. IF we do everything possible it still comes down to price differential between the Windows PCâ(TM)s and Linux PCâ(TM)s, then we can invest some/all of the royalty revenue from the deal back to the customer in the form of training, services, or even rebates. For more detail see that attached and let me know if you want to chat before your call. Note: This is not a partner program and is MS-internal only.
and
What is EDGI? EDGI (pronounced âedgyâ(TM)) is both a process for responding to large competitive threats and a large source of funding to level the playing field between Windows and Linux when a deal involves the purchase of new PCâ(TM)s.
Did you say â(TM)fundingâ(TM)?! How much? EDGI does not have a set limit for funding, but is instead limited on a per-deal basis. The maximum amount of funding that can be approved for an individual deal is the total amount of OEM revenue that Microsoft will recognize from the OEM/COEM from which new legal Windows PCâ(TM)s are purchased.
</tinfoil-hat-mode>
Note that most people would agree that Linux and Openoffice.org have improved a lot since 2002.

Thanks, but no thanks
Given the amount of links you posted from that website, you should probably mention that you are quite the star over there, complete with things like these:
Appended below is the IRC log from just minutes ago. As regular readers are probably aware, our reader "twitter" has abusive stalkers ('witch hunters') in this Web site. They followed his footsteps all the way from Slashdot just to discredit him personally wherever he goes, whatever he does. Speaking from experience, "twitter" is intimately aware of Microsoft's dirty secrets and he talks about it in public.
Aw, shucks. This is also where you confessed to your massive sockpuppetry of Slashdot:
They also identify my accounts on the first few posts. They got my GNUChop today and replied to it by cut and pasting a brlug comment.
I understand your activities here are quite the topic of conversation over there.
Worthy of mention also is the fact that you have done nothing but paste links to the Schiestowitz blog for the past year or so. Anyone looking at your comments and journals can attest to that. That blog is of course what some people call a den of paranoia, and other choice things. As for the operator, this is one of the better summaries I've read.
All of this of course pales in comparison to your nymshifting, sockpuppetry, trolling and massively obnoxious behavior that has made you the joke of the day around here. All of that is documented here.
So please, don't pretend that you're some FOSS hero on a mission bringing enlightenment down from the Schestowitz heaven for us poor Slashdotters to gape at in awe. You are a troll, an extremist, just like your friends, and I wish that none of you were involved with free software in any way. You are the worst of the worst. If I need references on OLPC or anything else, I'm sure there are more dependable sources for them than your best friend's "I hate everything" blog. Seriously, this is a man that insults and questions Linus Torvalds' way of life and the amount of children he has because he didn't march to step on a software license. What the fuck. You all should be put in a mental institution. You are worse than the worst shit you've ever tried to make up about Microsoft, as if they didn't do enough actual bad things.
Go away.

Wrecked to be wrecked.
XP was an extra cost forced on them when they had already be sabotaged. The demand for OLPC was there before they started the project. A few well placed bribes was all it took to cancel orders for Intel Classmates and other crap not up to the task. Sticking to the mission is always the best answer. It's astounding that OLPC leadership did not realize that they could not agree their way out of being destroyed. The more resources they allocated to dealing with XP and Intel, the fewer resources they had for OLPC and Sugar.

It's astounding that OLPC leadership did not realize that they could not agree their way out of being destroyed. The more resources they allocated to dealing with XP and Intel, the fewer resources they had for OLPC and Sugar.
Some helpful corruption links:
- OLPC, it's all about what's good for M$
- M$ giving to influence and threaten
- Times Online summary of M$ Intel destruction of OLPC
- Boycott Novell coverage of same
- Boycott Novell summary of patent and other corruption attacks against OLPC with extensive links and supporting documentation.

- A typical M$ press cover up
As for cover ups, it's surprising to see a Slashdot article about OLPC that does not mention Intel or M$ malice, something that's been documented here in the past.

Patent Trolls.
The problem with this is that the University will have a patent so that no one else can use it. Some people see this as an extension of M$'s business model. "Partner" companies that benefit from restrictions are providing the seed money to make patent look like a good idea. It it becomes a universal practice, no one will be able to get anything done. You should not share your better ideas or put a significant amount of work behind them if your University makes claims to all of your "IP". Free software developers should also steer clear of these kinds of places too - they are all second rate anyway and you are better off at a better school.

Vista, zune, xbox, M$TV. They've even bunged up Hotmail and Office. They have been caught lying about making money before and recently hushed an employee. They depend on massive tax evasion as well as government purchasing that's drying up.

Loser Parade.
According to this, All Five of M$'s Divisions Lost Money Last Quarter. FUDZilla says 17% will get the exe. M$ has screwed the pooch. They've been playing Slog games instead of making things people want. This failure would not have happened to a nicer company. Good riddance.

Fraud
Groklaw has a nice list of litigation that's a good starter but litigation only scratches the surface of M$ corruption. As the recent OOXML/ISO case shows, only a tiny fraction of M$ crimes ever reach litigation and these only ever deliver a fraction of justice. Cases of astroturf libel and other abuse have yet to make it to court.

Re:Users are branching out - game companies are no
You failed in knocking me down a couple of notches, I've learned to be steadfast in my beliefs as those who disagree with me are steadfast in theirs. If Epic didn't want a conspiracy theory they should have just been open in reasoning. Answer one post, and respond to all the new post with links to the one with the answer, case closed, no conspiracy. Deleting post and sweeping the issue under the rug after initially being such a vocal supporter of being cross platform didn't help their case. The Gears of War thing somewhat supported the "conspiracy theory".
Agreed the actual Unreal series has never been officially ported to Linux, though I know the original Unreal can be played with Unreal Tournaments engine, I've had it working multiple times with the hacked installer. Unreal II the Awakening however, I've never heard of working without WINE, I'm going to have to look into that, see if anything has changed.
So, no, not knocked down a notch, not ruling out the possibility of Microsoft having been indirectly a cause of delay, glad they're finally moving to do what they said they would do. I'm just glad that Epic is one of the few companies that usually does pay attention to multi-platform users. Another note, I've had every version of Quake installed and working on both Linux and OS X (not had much luck with the original UT on OS X, but I've got 2K4)

Re:I think it has passed already.
Despite the sales numbers, they are in fact bleeding badly. The stock has been flatline since 2000. They just tried pushing it up with a buyback when everyone's stock was dropping. Their cash reserve of billions has been demolished by bad buys and stock propping.

Re:Suse is not linux
Kids, you read too much of rabbid flames...
As I'm concerned, SUSE is good OS. Let the rest be sorted out by GPL.

No genetic algorithm used
Itâ(TM)s not a genetic algorithm. It's a stochastic hill-climber.
No recombination is done, the population size is one, so the genotype-phenotype mapping is not really important. Nor was step 0 carried out.
Looking at the number of steps it did take to produce that drawing, the convergence speed is not very impressive.
In short, it's the Mono Guard trying to sucker gullible Slashdot visitors into nailing their own nuts to a brick
In short, MS is hiring new advertising firms to try to gain a toehold in Java's market.

Real Policy Issues.
This bout of marketing hype matters less than matters of real substance. Obama, Gates talks are real cause for concern. Obama's platform had nice words about openness, let's hope the dog was wagging the tail in those talks. The conversation should have gone something like, "Gates, you are on notice." Others, worry about even larger platform shifts. It is too early to tell how things will really go.

Wintel in Garbage out.
Hi troll. Up to your usual bullshit and harassment? When you don't see me, you chase shadows. That's almost as dumb as saying that GNU/Linux represents less than 2% of the desktop market. The details of your argument don't support anything else, but I can go through them anyway because your lies are offensive.
If you go back and read Mr. Shen's comments, you will find that he was talking about shipments not sales. There's a big difference between the two that probably explains the reason EEE PC sold 4 million units instead of 5. He's recently been quoted debunking much of what you say, but we really can't expect him to be able to tell the truth thanks to M$'s vendor and OEM lock. M$ obviously whipped his ass.
Windows based netbooks being shipped is channel stuffing that will burn vendors dumb enough to fall for it. The bottom line is that GNU/Linux runs better and provides more features on netbooks than Windows ever will. XP requires an extra 4GB of SD just to load onto the original EEE PC and no one bought that model for Windows. If XP is not bad enough out of the box, it will be after six months of net use. Good luck getting that thing rebuilt at the local mom and pop computer store. Any sales of Windows EEE PCs are coming from dedicated GNU/Linux fan who hold their nose at vendor price fixing and buy an inappropriately cheaper but higher specced version. Casual users know better and are stocking up on full sized Vista failure notebooks at $300 a pop.

Facts hurt Microsoft, get over it
Choose your "experts" carefully.
I'll take an expert over a pay-for-say MS "expert" any day. Facts happen to run against MS, get over it. That's why the marketing firms they hire come down so hard on reviewers, evaluators and benchmarkers.
If you want to get down to the bottom of some of the many, many problems with MS Vista, as well as the OpenGL imitation, then see Peter Gutmann's analysis, A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection.
Running a smear campaign may or may not annoy the author, but it is the facts he is reporting. You can even read Peter's response to the MS attack dogs where he addresses their tactics as well as emphasizes some of the points they chose to skip over.
MS has a long history of manufacturing abuse of not just critics but also critical data. Money spend on MS products goes into funding unethical, anti-competitive, and, in some cases, illegal activity. Even helping keep the monopoly going, whether intentionally or unintentionally, by not supporting open formats or protocols allows the malfeasance continued funding.

Microsoft Cult Pays no Taxes for Real
Really, read this. Now ponder the Bill and M'Lady Gates scam. GWB is owned by M$.

Your lists are strange. Novell is the New SCO.
At the top of my list of companies that claim to be open source-friendly but that actually have dangerous agendas would be Sun, Apple, and Nokia.
This is true but none of the above have attacked software freedom the way Novell has or is as easy to avoid as Novell. Novell took $350 million dollars to agree that GNU/Linux was owned by M$ and that everyone needs to pay a license to use free software. Effective or not, they still claim all other distributions are illegitimate and dangerous to use. Boycott Novell has documented in detail every threat from Novell, M$ and the Wintel press. Boycott Novell has also reported the extent to which Novell is cramming inferior M$ technology into their distribution. Even Miguel de Icaza criticizes choice of Microsoft technology over open-source options now. The "valuable" contributions Novell makes that are worthwhile are available from other distributions that don't FUD free software and lay landmines in their dependencies for M$'s sake.

SW Patent Pact put Novell outside the community
This incident does bring up the question of what we will do when a government, NGO, or criminal group like the Mafia decides that Open Source software belongs to them and that people must pay a fee to them for using it...
Which is precisely what you have here. M$ tried via SCO to scuttle Linux. It turned out that SCO hadn't a leg to stand on. So, enter the Novel-M$ SW Patent deal where de Icaza and other receipt-carrying M$ Boosters inject proprietary technology into otherwise free and open source projects. Novell differs from SCO in that this time around there is a trail of receipts showing that yes you do owe M$money for their products even though they were readily available for download.
People have been good about readying the licenses for the main packages, but de Icaza and co. target the libraries and other components that these packages are built on. Combine that with a marketing team that hangs around Slashdot and goes after sites like Boycott Novell and they have made some headway. To be sure, Mono wastes a lot of space on the Ubuntu installation CD. Space which could have been used by Free Software. So even without the sw patent deal, Mono is technologically unsound.
Then there are Novell's attacks against OpenOffice.org and the OpenDocument Format. But that speaks for itself.
At the beginning it was simply described as a stupid move. Novell/M$ is a problem that is getting worse, mostly due to the noise they make and the interference they cause in free and open source projects. The patent pact put Novell outside the free and open source software community. The actions since then have only proven this to be more so.
