Because that is how we test new builds. I've written several ebuilds and it's good to have others test it before it's moved into portage tree.

You can then add new version request to bugzilla and have people post feedback. Remember, Gentoo is a meta distribution so using a tool such a bugzilla is a good idea.

Most new ebuilds are listed as enhancments, so you can refine your query to get just new ones.

Last, there is a "cutting-edge" version of portage at http://www.breakmygentoo.net/.

Don't forget to add Breakmygentoo. They've got lots of great ebuilds and i've been using the gnome 2.4 beta ebuilds all the way through. They're very quick at releasing them too.

http://www.breakmygentoo.net has been following the developmental releases of GNOME pretty quickly. There's usually an untested ebuild within an hour or so after an official announcemnt from GNOME.org.

Gnome has become more polished, and looks more like a mature desktop offering. The HIG had a really good impact on Gnome. Every close button is where it belongs, you don't even have to think about where it is. The only thing I miss are animations/eyecandy, they could improve the usability alot. 2.4 will be a nice improvement over 2.2.

Gnome 2.6 will probably be the same as 2.2/2.4: more polishing. I hope they will improve the gnome main menu (its just a win95 rip off). Better integration with the internet would also be nice. Just imagine, that you search for an amazon book with the search for files tool (should be called just 'Search' then ;)).

Anyway, I wish the Gnome development team lots of luck with the further development of the gnome desktop!

if you want cutting-edge stuff you should use gentoo
it works very well once installed and you get the things soon after they are released
there are a few exceptions but there is still breakmygentoo
